CECIL PALMER !!! CECIL GERSHWIN PALMER !!!
crawls up to you
I wish I could make white people(and not just white Americans) understand how diverse the pre-columbian Americas were. The history, religion, culture, politics was at least as complex as Europe's. There was the full gamut of religions, from monotheists to animists to ancestral religions. There were city building empires, village farmers, nomadic traders, and so many other ways to live. This is all just based on what we know, the fragments left behind and the stories of survivors of an apocalyptic plague. All this before the most extended campaign of genocide in history was waged in an attempt to wipe out those survivors.
Over 500 years spent trying to cut down a whole trunk of human culture.
Do you understand how much poorer our whole species is because of it? Can you imagine where art, religion, and science would be if we still had these vast bodies of knowledge? The stain of the colonial project will never be fully washed clean. We owe more than just the land to those we stole from. We owe them a whole future, a future that could have been brighter for all of us. If only greed and fear weren't allowed to rule this land.
you actually feel gaslit when you try to tell white people of a certain age that pewdiepie, with a platform so vast and catering to youth, helped reinvigorate racism and casual dehumanization towards indians because they get all “omg you can’t blame One man for that” like yes i can actually :) we were very incrementally making our way past the gas station indian popularized by apu and indian creatives were finally being given legitimate and serious opportunities (like say what you will about aziz and mindy in hindsight but at the time that was a shift culturally) only for this dumb swedish pig to get online and spark that vile shit right back up. ask any indian with a modicum of pride in their heritage and they can tell you how uncomfortable pewdiepie made us with ourselves
Occasionally forget people genuinely think capitalism is thousands of years old
One time I was talking about Robin Hood with some coworkers and one guy was like “he was bad because the people he helped learned to expect handouts” and I wanted to be like… okay can you explain how that flawed capitalist propaganda applies to feudalism
reminder that capitalism was literally invented in the 16th century
That’s an exaggeration. What was invented in the 16th century was mercantilism. Capitalism really dates for the beginning of the nineteenth century, with the rise of industry and cash crops over artisans and merchants. Vulture capitalism, with the notion that companies have no duties other than generating profit, is even younger.
Capitalism is only 200 years old and I have to say, they have not been an impressive 200 years
I think a lot of this comes from the fact that most people don’t know the formal definition of capitalism. We all know the word, we’ve all seen the jokes, but very few people bother to actually define it unless they’re talking about political theory and philosophy, so it’s easy to end up with the impression that Capitalism = Money Can Be Exchanged For Goods And Services.
Capitalism is the economic system where most of the means of production (i.e. everything people need to have to make the stuff that everyone wants) are owned by private individuals or corporations, who then hire people to provide the labor necessary to produce things, with the intent of selling the output at a profit. It’s the difference between “you’re a carpenter and you make a chair and you sell it” and “you’re Richard Q. Richington who owns a chair factory, and you pay people to sell the chairs you paid other people to make and then all the excess money goes back to you.” There have been Richard Q. Richingtons on and off throughout history, but that being the norm for every single industry is a pretty recent development.
An alarming amount of people seem to think capitalism = all trade, and I don’t think that’s a coincidence.
HAPPY DELTARUNE ANNOUNCEMENT TO ALL WHO CELEBRATE!!
time to break this out again
the "empathy fatigue" stuff is also very revealing because when you examine health professionals' self-reporting on the matter there is a specific type of person they describe losing empathy for- unsurprisingly, it's people with particularly chronic health issues and disability, drug users, people who "refuse to take care of themselves" and especially anyone with a health condition perceived to be "their own fault". very often what they describe as "empathy fatigue" is actually just the mask slipping on the seething contempt they already held
oh, during burnout you happen to feel less empathetic toward criminals, alcoholics, teens and drug users? that's really interesting and i feel so sorry for how hard your job must be that its caused these feelings in you.

#i understand where this complaint is coming from #I do think there is something to be said about how the current healthcare system beyond providers (ie insurance and hospital admin) #Is not set up to provide care to these populations (chronic illness substance use complex psych or social barriers) #and therefore providers who work with these populations often feel trapped and like they are unable to help these people
#now instead of recognizing that there are systems failures some people just start blaming the patients #which is a huge problem #but even providers who know there are systems problems will get burned out having to fight the system when caring for "hard patients #| know many doctors just really suck and should not be doctors #but the reason these populations are the ones identified in this type of question is because the system itself is hostile to helping them #so if a provider is helping them they are faced with more friction from the system #which obviously leads to burn out which everyone knows is bad for patients
#I guess my point is that this is a symptom of systemic failure not just because all doctors hate disabled people or something #not trying to excuse individual instances of providers being shitty. but I do think it's important to consider why #like most of the examples that person listed were just like I'm mad that people get hurt or sick #which i think is pretty stupid considering you're in the help hurt sick people job #but the first one hints at the frustration with the system
#also tho once a provider starts thinking like this they're kinda fucked bc it's a self fulfilling prophecy #like if you assume all addicts are going to leave AMA and refuse help #then you're not going to build rapport or even try to help them #which means they then leave AMA and it's your fault for not working with them as a person #idk maybe I'm just being defensive and this example is obviously bad #but I do think it's important to remember the systems

Hey did you see the politician elected as ‘right-wing’ who then proceeded to come out as gay and say he loved immigrants. Because it’s beautiful.
I think we speak for the entire nation when we say: lol
Kids today will never know the joy of the Australian government-funded free-to-air porn hour on the "Special Broadcasting Service" TV network.
tumblr is so funny within my mutual circle ppl will be like cannibalism as a metaphor for sex is honestly so overdone 🙄 like it’s not even transgressive anymore it’s just vanilla atp 🙄 and then you go a little too far outside that circle and people are trigger tagging memes about infidelity
me, to my roommates: cnc is vanilla, practically everyone i've ever fucked has been into cnc. incest is also just something that everyone is into, it's basically the #1 porn search category. i'm a little embarrassed about how normal my kinks are, since the weirdest shit i'm into is basically knifeplay and bloodplay and intox...
my roommates:
And stay safe everyone!
