Thinking about how often Jean quotes Neil to himself to feel safe. Thinking about Jean saying to Jeremy you don’t have to trust him because I do. Thinking of how Nora said if Neil had been a raven when he was supposed to be he could have never left Jean alone even after Kevin did. Thinking about Neil and his ‘one of us has to survive this, and it’s going to be him’ mentality taking root and growing into everyone he cares about. Including Jean. Thinking about misplaced forever partners. Thinking about two kids who had no one but each other in every version of the story except for the one we got, so we see this fractured longing version instead and they’re so much better off, but there’s something missing too.

Reading Jean’s perspective really is an experience bc he’ll call the love of his life “the golden captain” and then call Neil Josten a malfunctioning cretin, an unfulfilled promise, an abominable cockroach and his misplaced forever partner within two pages

I just enjoy the fact that Jean's insults towards Neil are almost always of French origin: cretin, imbecile, rascal, malcontent, menace. If he's going to insult his misplaced forever partner, it's going to be in respectable language, thank you very much

i think the reason wylan is the only crow willing to argue with kaz is because he hates cruel authority figures. his father has always ordered him around, and often with the threat of abuse or neglect.

think about it, both times he stood up to kaz, it was on the behalf of someone he felt needed protection.

Something I appreciate is that Inej being a sexual assault and abuse survivor is not used to make her Kaz’s damsel in distress. Too often, in stories that feature women who are survivors of such crimes, their pain and trauma is just used to make their male love interest protective and macho over them. That’s not the case in six of crows. Ofc Kaz hates that that happened to her and feels angry, but he doesn’t see her as a helpless, delicate flower he needs to shield at all times. He has respect for her and her strength, her grit. Inej’s backstory is used to develop her character arc and development, and to show what too many people, especially women who are part of racial and ethnic minorities, have had to endure. It’s not used to make Kaz a possessive alpha male.
