Beneath the flickering fluorescence, they hold court— pawed princes of the platform, tails writing sonnets in the grime.
New Yorkers step over them like minor inconveniences, but I’ve seen them pause mid-scuttle, black eyes gleaming with subway wisdom, whiskers twitching at the scent of pretzel crumbs and human haste.
They know the tunnels better than the MTA— darting through third rails like poets skirting clichés, nests woven from stolen mittens and the frayed edges of rush hour.
Oiled shadows slipping between tracks, they’ve mastered the art of survival in a city that forgets to look down.
At 2am, when the trains grow sparse, they reclaim their kingdom— feasting on the arrogance of dropped pizza, performing acrobatics over sleeping bags, their tiny feet composing jazz on the concrete stage.
We pay $2.90 for the ride; they ride for free, soulless and splendid, New York’s true natives— unimpressed by skyscrapers, unmoved by our pretensions, perfect in their indifference.
(Next time you see one, tip your hat. They were here first, and they’ll be here long after the last train rattles into dust.)
Not that anybody asked, but I think it's important to understand how shame and guilt actually work before you try to use it for good.
It's a necessary emotion. There are reasons we have it. It makes everything so. much. worse. when you use it wrong.
Shame and guilt are DE-motivators. They are meant to stop behavior, not promote it. You cannot, ever, in any meaningful way, guilt someone into doing good. You can only shame them into not doing bad.
Let's say you're a parent and your kid is having issues.
Swearing in class? Shame could work. You want them to stop it. Keep it in proportion*, and it might help. *(KEEP IT IN PROPORTION!!!)
Not doing their homework? NO! STOP! NO NOT DO THAT! EVER! EVER! EVER! You want them to start to do their homework. Shaming them will have to opposite effect! You have demotivated them! They will double down on NOT doing it. Not because they are being oppositional, but because that's what shame does!
You can't guilt people into building better habits, being more successful, or getting more involved. That requires encouragement. You need to motivate for that stuff!
If you want it in a simple phrase:
You can shame someone out of being a bad person, but you can't shame them into being a good person.
Fun fact, that was literally what inspired me to make this post!

Note: I am not asking necessarily which of these songs you like the best, just which one puts you in an emotional state that you can't quite express. Because I am of A Certain Age, my answer would probably be either "Clocks" or "Viva La Vida". Personally, "Adventure of a Lifetime" reminds me of dissociating while mopping a convenience store floor, but maybe it speaks to you.

There are entire established DeafBlind communities! There is a DeafBlind language, Protactile. There are DeafBlind people on the internet around you.

In the UK there's a thing called the endangered crafts list which I highly recommend if you fancy discovering some crafts you never even knew existed. Scientific and optical instrument making is considered 'critically endangered' and glassworking (scientific glassware) is just considered endangered, which is for 'crafts with a shrinking market share, an ageing demographic or crafts with a declining number of practitioners.' There's some other crafts in that category which are easier to teach yourself or go to classes on that list, like lithography, marbling or block printing on fabric, so it might be worth considering those if you're looking for something to try.
