Emme had been walking with her nose in a book, trying to study as she walked. It wasn’t the best idea, and her first thought was that the yelling was directed at her. Her head snapped up and relief rushed through her when she realized she hadn’t done it. “Some people need to pay more attention,” she said, shaking her head, although a sheepish smile crossed her face as she added, “like me, actually.”

“Oh, Marls, I’m half-tempted just to make you come live with me so I can keep an eye on you.” Emme shook her head, grinning as she did so. If they couldn’t be together, a party was the next best thing. “I’ll make all the plans and give you the details then, and please make sure you drag his arse to it. I see him even less than I see you.”

Luce noticed the change in Emme’s demeanor, but not wanting to make things awkward decided to pretend as though she didn’t. Instead, she simply nodded along. “Yeah, I guess that would be easier. Plus, having no dishes to clean is always a good thing.” Luce had never been a good cook, her mother always believing that was work for the elves. She remembered how much enjoyment she had taken from Emme showing her a few recipes. At this point, though, the memories were quite painful. Things had been so much better back then, simpler and carefree. Part of her felt tempted to ask if she had started seeing someone with how busy she was, but she thought against it. “Do you have somewhere in mind that you wanted to work?”

Emme had hoped that things would be easier with Lucinda but maybe that had been foolish. The break-up had been particularly painful and there hadn’t been enough time to get over it adequately. But she’d have to manage the rest of the conversation somehow. “It’s a lot easier, and makes the tidying up a lot easier too.” She’d always been very neat anyway, but her flat was almost always spotless now simply because she wasn’t around enough to make a mess. “Oh, I haven’t thought much about it,” she said, shrugging. “But I thought it might be helpful if the Aurors had someone trained with them when they went out. I don’t even know if that’s something they do though.”

Ministry of Magic Snow Ball

To be fond of dancing was a certain step towards falling in love.

Emme took advantage of the opportunity to dress up and enjoy herself for a night. Rather than follow the norm and choose a long gown, she oped for something short and flirty, accessorizing the red dress with white and silver.

‘Good thing I have a map.’ He smiled and waved the aforementioned item in the air. ‘It’s changed so much since I last had been here.’ Really, even the Knight Bus seemed to have appeared from a completely opposite direction.

Emme raised her eyebrows, grinning a little. “Well then, it’s a good thing I’m such an adventurer, isn’t it? I’ve never minded being a little bit lost. Remind me again, where exactly we’re going?”

Lily leaned against her easily, wrapping her own arm securely around Emme for a moment. She’d missed all of this, and Petunia’s adamant refusal to see her only made time with her friends that much more precious. “As long as I’d get my red locks back, I can agree to that– depending on the color. But I trust your judgment.” She promised, letting out a laugh at her words, “we could always charm you green, go for the Oz witch. But you know, I’m not sure that’s something we should shoot for. Most of my ideas are mainly from Muggle media, I’m afraid. You’d make one hell of a Wonder Woman, though.”

“Of course you would! You wouldn’t be my Lily without that red hair. If you wanted to go as Princess Leia, I can just charm it brown for the night. Easy fix, and I don’t think I’ve ever messed that one up. You certainly should trust my judgment though.” She beamed at Lily, glad that their schedules had allowed this time. “I could be a pretty superb Wicked Witch, couldn’t I? That would be fun.” And just some more cosmetic charms to make her green. But that idea was nothing compared to Wonder Woman. Emme didn’t really read comics or anything, mainly from a lack of time, but even she knew of Wonder Woman. “Oooh, I think you’re on to something there, Lily. I could pull off Wonder Woman.”

“Of course I do, I can’t just tell anyone my plan, I have to make sure I can trust you first,” he said with a grin. He ate a chip before raising an eyebrow at her. “What do you mean if nothing else?! I have plenty of good traits!”

Emme held out another moment, but her curiosity won in the end. He was just so smug about it, she had to know the plan. “All right, I promise I won’t tell anyone. Is that good enough or should we make an unbreakable bond?” Wrinkling her nose, she pretended to think while she reached for another chip. After a moment, she shook her head. “I dunno, Potter, I’m having a hard time bringing back all these good traits you claim to have.”

“Too busy at St. Mungo’s to cook for yourself? They must have you working a lot, then.” Lucinda could easily remember how often Emmeline used to cook for them and it was quite a bit. Especially considering the fact that once Luce had started getting the threats of someone hurting Em for their relationship, they had stopped going out in public. How foolish she had been to think that would solve the problem. But, things had changed, at least, for her they had and she wasn’t afraid of getting Emmeline hurt, anymore. “Oh, c’mon, I’m sure you have something going on. Or some interesting stories from training.”

Emme’s light expression tightened a little, not so much at the question as at the memories and implications of it. She could remember all too well how things had been with Lucinda; cooking had been fun then. It wasn’t nearly as much fun, and some of her favorite dishes brought back bittersweet memories. “They do,” she said, after a moment of hesitation. “And it’s been a lot of studying so it’s easier just to grab something when I’m out.” The domestic arts had lost their appeal since the break-up. “I swear, if I’m not studying, then I’m sleeping. I need to look for a job, I think, but I don’t know where I’d fit the hours in.” Laughing, she ran a hand through her hair, trying to remember a funny story from training. There were plenty of them, but it was always hard to bring one to mind on command like this.

Septima blinked. She recognized Emmeline from the brief time their paths had crossed in Hogwarts - but that was long past, now, and it certainly didn’t explain why the girl had suddenly gone red. Whatever the reason she didn’t question it, certain it was none of her concern, anyways. “You mean other than arithmancy? I don’t know, I always liked astronomy, and dogs. Always wanted one, but there were seven of us, didn’t leave much room for pets.” She didn’t know why she was sharing so much, and caught herself doing so a moment too late. “Perks of living in the Muggle and wizarding world alike, I suppose, having interests on both ends.”

At least the conversation moved on without any embarrassing questions; Emme wasn’t sure how she’d be able to politely tell the other woman of the schoolgirl crush - which had apparently not gone away. “Well, I’m not entirely sure what you could do with either of those interests. Maybe work in a pet shop? Or a vet’s office?” She couldn’t picture someone like Septima Vector working at a place like that though. “I’m sure there’s something you could do though. I’m studying to be a Mediwitch.” Her face lit up and she nodded quickly; although it would have been nice to be fully immersed in the magical world, she wouldn’t trade her Muggle side for anything. “I agree. I was always happy to be a half-blood because it’s the best of both worlds.”
