I keep hearing John Green say he's retired from working and lemme just say John Green is the least retired retired person I've ever seen.
I am retired!!! I retired in October of 2017 and have kept my promise not to exchange my labor for money.
Since 2017, I have only done stuff that I thought was interesting or useful regardless of whether it pays, because we have more than enough money, and despite what billionaires might tell you, there is literally no difference between "more than enough" and "much more than enough."
So I no longer work for money. But in retirement one must keep busy, which is why I have taken on an unpaid gig as the social media intern for a coffee and tea business that donates 100% of its profit to charity.
I also sometimes travel to universities and other places to speak in support of Partners in Health and global access to tuberculosis care, and sometimes I write books because writing makes me happy, and every Tuesday I make a video on vlogbrothers, and I make a podcast about the world cup with my friends from high school, and so on, but none of these things constitutes work. These are just Retirement Projects, which are essential to a happy retirement.
This is why I have TikTok
I keep remembering a run of Hamlet I saw a few years ago, where the Ghost was costumed in full plate armour which was very noisy, and instead of muffling it, they had him crash across the stage, stomping so the whole set rattled, and he said all of his lines in a bellow, like he was furious with Hamlet.
And the thing that made it absolutely terrifying was that Hamlet was the only one who reacted. He was cowering, and covering his ears with both hands, and yelling to be heard over the noise.
And no one else seemed to know why he was doing that. The other actors didn't even raise their voices.
That's scary, something so loud and painful, and REAL, and the people around you don't even notice it, and think that you're the crazy one.
I love when I hear about a choice in Shakespeare I've never thought of before. Brilliant
in happier pride news i actually found this deeply heartwarming
that's solidarity baybeeee
Further context: Durham city council (Reform UK) cut funding and support for Pride. The Durham Miner's Association and other trade unions raised enough money for Durham Pride 2026 to go ahead - a direct call back to when Lesbian and Gays Support the Miners (LGSM) raised money for mining communities when Margaret Thatcher seized union funding during the miner strikes of 1984-85.
At the 1985 Labour party meet, the motion to support LGBT rights as a party was passed due to a block vote from mining unions.
Stephen Guy, the chair of the Durham Miners’ Association, said that when it became apparent Durham Pride was under threat, he took it upon himself to “encourage the trade union movement to step up and do the right thing, and stand shoulder to shoulder with the LGBT+ community […] They not only raised funds for us, but came to our communities, uplifted our spirits when they were down, and showed their solidarity.”
My understanding is that the cut funding from Durham council was £2,500 - the trade union donations raised in response were worth £25,000

This is probably a little too much nuance, but whenever I see a "all borders are violence" post (a political position I generally agree with!) I always add a little asterisk that says "*but the border checks that keep you from bringing homegrown produce into big agricultural areas to avoid the transmission of parasites and invasive species are actually fine and if we were more vigilant about that kind of thing maybe we wouldn't have spotted lanternflies in the states."
That doesn't work as well as a slogan, though
Things borders should be for:
Biosecurity
Customs management (you do not want people importing a bunch of stuff that doesn't meet your country's safety standards, for example)
Things like that one lake in Europe where three national borders coincide and they built an island specifically so you can run between countries for fun
Things borders shouldn't be for:
Policing who can and can't come into a country

Happy Indigenous Peoples Day
Reminder that blood quantum laws were imposed so governments could cheat treaties and not pay what they owe.

From the article:
Forty years after China launched the "Wild Horse Return Program", the Przewalski's horse — the world's only surviving wild horse species — has completed a historic transition from being on the brink of extinction to there being self-sustaining wild herds in Northwest China. The population of Przewalski's horses in China has surpassed 900 individuals, accounting for approximately one-third of the global total, according to figures released during an event to mark the 40th anniversary of the species' reintroduction. The milestone follows decades of conservation under the "Wild Horse Return Program", an initiative launched in 1985 to restore the species that was declared extinct in the wild during the 1970s due to poaching and habitat loss. The recovery has successfully transitioned the "living fossil" — which possesses an evolutionary history of 60 million years — from captive breeding to self-sustaining wild herds.
