Just here to remind you that Hugo was originally a 24 year old DnD character and that he got aged down for Vat7k.
Also here to remind you that Kay and Anna shipped Hugo with Varian BEFORE they aged him down and before they aged up Varian to 18 for their comic idea.
Changing the age of characters to ship them is nothing evil, wrong or degenerate. They are fictional characters.
Does anyone else find it kinda ironic that this OC x Canon self insert fanfiction wouldn’t even exist if the creators didn’t ship their 24 year old OC with season 1 Varian? I doubt any fans of the AU will look at these artworks and feel disgusted because they feature an adult flirting with a child. Legit, that’s what it means to have a ship bias. It’s about the characters and whatever chemistry you think they would have together. We all know that I don’t ship Varigo, but I am a multi shipper that does like Varipunzel. Which has a similar age gap to New Dream. A pairing that is barely legal by anti standards, but it gets a pass because the movie/show portray it as healthy. The same thing can be accomplished in fanfiction. Which is often the case because shippers like idealized representations of romance 90% of the time. Most fans are a lot like the creators of 7K in that we also change character ages for AU’s. There is absolutely nothing wrong with doing this. It doesn’t make you a predator, but if you believe that it does then Varigo is not the ship for you. The main thing to keep in mind when shipping is that you can’t think about it with real world logic. Because in fanworks you have the power to change absolutely everything about existing characters on a whim. Nobody is stopping you from adjusting their age, gender, or sexual orientation to fit your personal preferences. When you’re playing pretend you make the rules. The characters can’t think for themselves, they don’t have autonomy. So in the end we’re all just silly dorks writing about fictional characters and taking it far to seriously for our own mental health… Let that sink in. I wholeheartedly wish the hardcore anti shippers within the community would do a bit of self reflection. The fandom can’t be a safe place if you’re the ones actively making it dangerous. I’ve seen stalking, harassment, defamatory posts, death threats/people being told to off themselves, and NSFW Varigo artworks being sent to minors. This behavior does not benefit anyone. If these people are unable to regulate their emotions, then they should get a proper psyche evaluation. Fan content is what attracts new people into the community after a movie/series finishes airing. What do anti shippers think will happen if people leave? It’s like they don’t realize that it’ll harm their section of the fandom as well… It’s so illogical… You all are basically trying to shoot yourselves in the foot. Sorry for rambling, I just get so frustrated by all of this negativity.
I don't have an issue with the ship but I do have an issue with them taking their D&D character and trying to make that canon.
A custom character for a franchise is a character written for that universe from the beginning, and one you made to let go of for your job. One that had the purpose to be for that world.
But taking your OC and adapting them for the universe just because you liked them together with one of the shows characters? There is always going to be favoritism or a lean to focus on them.
Sure do it in fan content all you want. But not canon. There's Something that just feels wrong Intellectual Property wise with that.
For that reason alone I'm kind of glad VAT7K got rejected. At least not before replacing Hugo with a custom made for the universe from conception character.
Yeah, I 1hundy% agree with you. I'd probably be indifferent towards the AU if it wasn't for this. Some people might be confused on why I call Hugo a self insert. It’s because a D&D character is an avatar. They placed themselves into this character's shoes throughout the D&D campaign. So he is a character they lived vicariously through. When you reuse a character that you are this attached to for an OC x Canon ship it becomes a wish fulfillment fantasy. Which is why Hugo is the hero in 7K and not Varian. I’m okay with people reusing OC’s for personal projects, but in this case they were creating the concept for a graphic novel spin off to a Disney series. Something that would be forever linked to the Tangled franchise. Much more thought and consideration should have gone into all aspects of this work. Especially potential repercussions for posting online without anonymity. Sure, it did not get greenlit, but that does not mean that no damage was done. Once the rejected concept became public, fans became desperate for more ‘lore’ to add to their AU's fanon. This motivated them to uncovered some of the OC’s dirty laundry. Which to me sort of taints the whole concept. Not just because it’s graphically NSFW, but because fans were robbed of a blank slate character to project onto. What we have is a spliced together hybridization between the two characters which can never be separated.

i know the point of rapunzel putting on the crown at the end of the series was that she was finally comfortable in it, and i know that it was the only possible ending for her but it never fails to make me unbelievably sad she was doomed before she was even born, she was doomed because she was born. the darkness of the black rocks was already unleashed because she was saved. after she was kidnapped, there were no other heirs, why? infertility, plot reasons, grief? and she comes back from 18 years of being fucked in the head by gothel, she comes back as a myth, "the lost princess of the sun kingdom" even more so when she sneaks out before her coronation and suddenly the mark of this stupid cosmic mistake, the mark of her trauma is latched onto her in 70 feet worth of unbreakable blonde hair and there's these expectations that come with being this myth, this lost princess from the tower. instead of having 18 years of learning things normally, it all gets shoved on her in six months. probably not six months after that, her parents leave for two days, leaving her in charge, and of course it all goes wrong. and of course she blames herself for it. and of course the fairly reasonable decision at the time to prioritize an entire kingdom over this one kid she barely knows lands her in deep shit, gets her mom kidnapped and her loved ones almost killed (i honestly don't even blame her for not visiting varian after the storm. she knew he was mad at her and she knew something was wrong. she was scared and didn't want to face what the possibilities could be because, i don't know, that's what she'd been taught to do for eighteen years of her life?) then all the things with cass's betrayal which is a post in of itself, coming home just to be made temporary queen and knowing it all rides on you. "you're not alone" "maybe it would be better if i were" NO ONE talks about this line holy shit so she's doomed to be royalty and doomed to be this mythical figure either way that has to save the kingdom and her friends from destruction because her father decided to save her. even if she'd somehow ran off with eugene in the movie (+cut her hair) instead of realizing her heritage, the rocks still would've been a problem. in all honesty, i think in all timelines she still would've been curious about them and touched them. she probably still would've been found out and made crown princess she should've had the chance to live a normal life after the tower and be as wild as she wanted with no global consequences but no she gets this. it's not like she even makes a particularly good "savior-figure" OR princess/queen anyway (and then i think about arianna being so similar to rapunzel and mellowing out when she became queen and i fear rapunzel would turn out the same way eventually, i fear she's still trapped but it was the only ending she ever could've gotten so i mean at least she's making the best of it) hhrhgnjfd thinking about her

I heard Varian was originally supposed to be 19 years old, but his age was changed to 14 to make the events of season 1 more tragic. Is this true? Also, in his original concept art, Varian apparently had a goatee a la the one he had in the S3 premiere. I thought it was a little smudge on the paper, but it's supposed to be a goatee?!
What I heard from a crew member is that he was originally supposed to be "about 16" but without a specific age set. I don't know which concept art you're looking at (or which image of it), so I can't possibly confirm, deny, or even discuss it properly. I mean, is it his original original concept art, or is it just one of the early designs for him that we lucky public have been allowed to see?
Never mind, I found it. That's hardly his original concept art.
The one on the far left is, but the one on the right is while Ben Balistreri was developing him gradually into the look he eventually ended up with. You can find early boards where he still had that first look on the left. The only reason he didn't keep the goatee (as in have it be a real thing he grew) is because Anna Lencioni hated it and boarded Lance rubbing it off his chin, and everyone thought it was so funny that they kept it.
Btw I did start writing a Varalina fic forever ago I am just very slow. Varians got some issues. Some parts of the story have Occam’s razor by Ferry as a mood. Probably more Varian focused then Catalina focused. Though it’s def a varalina fic. It also won’t involve the 7 kingdoms stuff

There’s not going to be a speedpaint - it’s just ten minutes of me doing everything wrong and it’s kind of embarrassing-
It feels like more people respect and/or have empathy for Varian and his villain arch over Cassandra and her villain arch. I personally favor Varian, but what are your thoughts?
To me, it's likely because Varian's villain arc suited his personality, but Cassandra's didn't suit hers. The fact that she trusted a nameless ghost girl when, in the past, she'd mentioned multiple times that she didn't trust people easily, seemed extremely out of character for her. Not to mention, his villain arc was pretty well planned from the beginning, but a lot of hers was made up or altered as they went, and it shows. Varian's reasoning was sound for a teenager (idolized Rapunzel > felt betrayed by her > was desperate to help his father and would do whatever it took to get help) where as Cassandra's reasoning didn't make sense for an adult woman with her personality (has been friends with Rapunzel for about two years > trusts a stranger that tells her it's Rapunzel's fault she was abandoned > has no clear goals with what she wants to do with that power, but killing people and taking over the kingdom is not above the line).
Also, Varian's redemption felt very natural (if a little rushed), where as Cassandra's felt entirely last-minute and only came about because she lost. We got to see the effects of Varian's redemption, and got the satisfaction of knowing that Rapunzel forgiving him didn't mean that everyone forgave him, and he had to earn everyone's trust back. With Cassandra, a tearful apology to and hug from Rapunzel fixed everything she'd been doing to everyone for everyone, and that's not satisfying at all.
(Besides, there's also something satisfying in "underdog takes on the government because it's not helping the people who need it" vs "person feels that a fellow victim of abuse by the same person is somehow responsible for their own abuse and takes it out on literally everyone".)
I cannot even put into words how many emotions this story makes me feel. It’s so sad and sweet and cute and just plain heartbreaking. It shows us how much of a monster Gothel really was, but it also shows just how strong Eugene and Rapunzel’s bond is. This is how you OTP.

tangled gave us so much, but mostly it gave us the beautiful and intense love of a horse and the man he is chasing in order to imprison
i personally believe that maximus was the former captain of the guard who was cursed into horse form pretty recently, and everyone’s having trouble adjusting to it.
like, he’s entitled to sick leave, he really ought to take a couple months to break the curse and come to terms with whatever the fuck just happened to him, but instead of embarking on a journey of self-discovery and healing he just keeps showing up to work. no one can get captain maximus to go on his fucking voyage of self actualization and fix the curse because he’s obsessed with catching flinn ryder. everyone really fucking hopes that when he finally catches this guy the curse might be broken anyway, but it isn’t.
he just keeps showing up to work. he glares at the stablehands until they saddle him up. everyone’s gone over the regulations a dozen times but there’s nothing there saying you’re not allowed to saddle and ride the captain of the guard if he makes you do it. his former second in command rides him around like ‘sir i really don’t know about this’ and he’s just like ‘are we going to catch some criminals or what.’
you can see in the movie that everyone in the royal guard defers to this horse. it’s absolutely because that’s their boss. and secondarily because now he’s two thousand pounds of percheron.
there is no evidence against this theory and you cannot prove me wrong.
