Happy Christmas from Varnish! Even if you're just down with the bling of the holiday, we hope you're rockin' around a Christmas tree tonight. Peace and joy to all! (So maybe stop rockin' at 10pm unless you wear headphones? Heh!)

Things have been so unsettled lately that we forgot to post a couple weeks ago to acknowledge the anniversary of our video for Bruise Me going live. But videos aren’t smart enough to realise we’ve missed their birthday by a bit, right? So, happy birthday, Bruise Me video!
Someday, I’ll consistently remember to post from this account, not the other, when it’s band stuff...
cutting through the disbelief i gasp, inhale, at last relief then exhale, screaming, public fights i wanna keep you up all night
(lyrics to Wanna by Amber Bird, song by Varnish aka us!)
Here's a playlist to reflect the autumn-ness of my winter heart. The potent blend of nostalgia and rain, longings and hopes, of that strange moment when you realise that sometimes your depression feels a little like a security blanket. (This is a playlist you feel; don't think too hard.) As we say in our bio, we are a band rooted in rain-soaked cities and dry mouths…and that feels autumnal in my head. So, from the abundance of my post-summer-misery core, here's that playlist. (Short a couple songs, cos Spotify hates me.)
you’re the one who ruined it all...
Right. It's been quite a year so far. But Autumn? Autumn is my time. So, hey, Autumn? Let's do this! (Jason and I continue to scheme…maybe Autumn will aid the fight...) What's your season, rock'n'roller?
Proving it’s not just my side project (transatlanatic Autistic duo @thecompanionsarehere) that gets my lyrics with cosmic themes...
(I swear I’ll post more than lyrics again ASAP. Things have just been...a bit mad over here.)
Friday mood(board)? Something to be said for being Tied to My Chair...
A playlist to go with Tied to My Chair by Varnish. This ill-advised attraction...Interrogation or flirtation...Pain or pickup lines...I will wreck you, and you will thank me for it.
Here's a little trivia to go along with this playlist for Tied to My Chair: in French, "chair" is the word for flesh. (But it's not pronounced like the English word "chair." Instead, it's pronounced a bit more like the English word "share.") And that's all conveniently appropriate if you're paying attention to the lyrics... (ps Spotify didn't have the right Joan Jett song, so the one that's there is only okay. UGH, Spotify. UGH.)
I'm intrigued enough by this that I've also asked it on the @amberrockstar account as well… Read an article where a man reckoned that part of why his son dressed uniquely was to signal to others who might be anything like him that this was who he was. I've been thinking how, for me, my appearance (which is me trying to manifest externally who I am internally) is something like that. And it can be both a flag to mark who I am, and a flag that might warn some I am, perhaps, not for them. My aesthetic and my art are my primary flags. And, you...If you fly a flag, how do you do so?
Friday mood(board)? Thought things were stable, but seems they're Slipping... (Posting this on the anniversary of Ian Curtis's death seems...yeah...)
More music video history! In 1959, we got the video jukebox. "For about five years, 500-pound, 7-foot-high machines that played 16-millimeter Technicolor films of pop stars were installed in bars across the world. The videos were often colorful and swanky, the kind of thing that’d get a barfly’s attention." Pictured here: The Scopitone! Only two companies made video jukeboxes then, and this was one.
A playlist to go with Slipping by Varnish. No control, no comprehension. No tomorrows, no retention. I don't know who I am, but I know: I am not the one who gets to stay. Forget…or feel the loss forever.
With post-punk’s tendency to hit themes of alienation and disconnection, there’s quite a lot of that going on in the playlist that goes with Slipping, which is itself full of such themes. This playlist feels like finding my favourite cardigan from my teens, comfortable and dark and full of holes.
