BREAKING NEWS: NEW YEAR, NEW ME?

1 January 1821

Bannerman and Raffles have been recalled by The British crown. A newly knighted Sir Arthur Hayes has been granted the role of Governor of the newly-formed British East India Administration, comprising the EIC’s colonies, Raffles’ domain, and assuming all the operations of British control in the Archipelago. Locals throughout Penang and South Sumatra rejoice and dance in the streets at this development! All hail Arthur Hayes! 

King William of the Netherlands, dismayed by his subjects’ incompetence in managing a 300-year-old colonial enterprise, has suffered from a mental breakdown and has declared direct authoritarian rule over the Netherlands’ colonies, especially in East India. His subjects rejoice, and the previous administrators are reportedly being paraded around the streets of Batavia wearing ‘dunce’ hats.

Several former colonies of the British and Dutch are now enjoying self-rule, particularly the Mataram successor states of Yogyakarta and Surakarta. Huzzein reportedly has an entourage of 4 huzzes surrounding him at all times as Sultan of Johor-Riau-Lingga-Pahang. The deposed Sir Stamford Raffles, Thomas Otho Travers, and Raja Jaafar, all of whom are in Bencoolen at the moment, are reportedly planning to move to Fort Canning due to it being ‘one MRT station away’, leaving everyone confused as to what Fort Canning and MRTs are.

Free Reign(ier)

25 November 1820

Two assassins have been sent by the KNIL to Borneo to free Reiner D’Ozy-and were successful! After an intense battle, Reinier D’Ozy has now been freed and is safely on his way back home.

Press Release: FREE REINIER D'OZY!!!

All Dutch officials were in disbelief when they heard the news that Reinier D'ozy was abducted for war crimes against the sultanate. With this, the Dutch have launched investigations with their trustworthy team. The Dutch have talked to locals and people around the area where Reinier D'ozy resides at along with the areas where she was claimed to have been committing war crimes against the sultanate. It was found that Reinier D'ozy IS NOT GUILTY. The Dutch are extremely angered at this and will take action immediately.

Tengku Hussein recognised as Sultan Huzzein.

14 August 1820 - Tengku Hussein has been coronated in the presence of the lords of the Johor Sultanate with the Temenggong at his right hand, taking the regnal name of Sultan Huzzein Shah.

Sharif’s last push

6 august 1820

A contingent sent by Sultan Sharif, nominal Sultan of Aceh, now the rump-state of Kutaraja, has conducted a daring last attack on the besieging army of Sultan Alauddin. The attack caught Alauddin’s army by surprise, and they managed to inflict major casualties on said army. Alauddin was able to flee with his guards, and was last seen on the road from Kutaraja to Pidie. In the aftermath of this retreat, Sharif has been able to regain control of several kampungs around Kutaraja.

More trouble in Yogyakarta and Surakarta!

30 june 1820

Furthering the tensions between Yogyakarta and Surakarta, following an assasination attempt on Sultan Susuhan Pakubuwono IV, Hamengkubuwono IV has launched an attack on Surakarta.  Yogyakarta’s troops have reached the capitol of Surakarta, wreaking havoc on Surakarta’s infrastructure along the way. Backed by the Dutch, Hamenkubuwono is utilising Dutch military powers to enter through Mangkunegeran’s border with Surakarta. Hamengkubuwono stands at the border of the capital, The future of Java is at a stand.

Say Ewwww to the Europeans

Bannerman has revoked Dutch permission to trade in Penang. The rest of the Governors of the EIC have not made such moves in the regions under their influence. However, the Dutch have ; British trade in Dutch regions is strictly not allowed.

Reiner D’Ozy has been caught!

30/10/1819

The Bruneians have gotten their hands on Reiner D’ozy! He was abducted for war crimes against the Sultanate. Dutch officials are distraught that their newly elected leader could do such a thing. He was last seen in his residence on the night of 29 October and by dawn, the only thing that was left of him was his unique scarf. However, a note was left by the kidnappers, signed off by the Bruneian officials.

Bugis betrayed!

To: The Bugis 

A shocking discovery has been made!! From rumours to confirmed plans revealed by local merchants overhearing the plans of Dutch trade officials; the Dutch intend to brutally suppress the Bugis trade and maritime rights along with their other interests in the Archipelago! Sultan Abdul Rahman, sitting dormantly on the throne, has done nothing and refuses to do anything to address the plight of the Bugis! Tengku Hussein, who has gotten word about the plan and expressed his sympathy to the plight of the Bugis. He has promised to shut down the planned suppression planned by the Dutch. Tengku Hussein requests Bugis support to help him regain the throne of the Johor Sultanate. He looks forward to hearing out Bugis interests at his royal court and treating them equitably as part of one united and stable Johor Sultanate and Nusantara free of foreign interference. 

Again, I am unbiased and only drawn to the better options.

"I Sultan Hamengkubuwono IV, officially declare that I did not arrange such an attempt to take Susuhunan Pakubuwono's life and it has been brought to my attention by my sources that it was actually a distressed local that did indeed decide to launch this attack on Susuhunan's life after hearing of the many attempts launched on mine therefore I feel that it is wrong for me to take the full blame given by Susuhunan Pakubuwono."

Netherlands Slacking, Brunei Attacking, Hussein ???cking

21 October 1819

With the continued inaction of the Dutch colonial administration, the Sultanate of Brunei has launched an invasion of the Dutch-occupied island of Borneo, which they see as rightfully Bruneian. With a force of 20000 men, they captured the Dutch vassal state of Kutai Kartanegara. The Dutch MUST respond immediately if they want to stay present in the aforementioned island. Because of the fact that they’re trying to get him convicted, Tengku Hussein has decided to use this pivotal moment to declare sovereignty and cast off all ties with the Dutch administration. The natives under his rule are neither supporting the Dutch nor Hussein, making it unclear: who rules Johor? (might it be Arthur Hayes?)

7 October 1819

Bannerman has taken swift action to address the Arthur Hayes crisis. Kedah has returned to the status quo. He had the foresight to send a delegation apologizing to the Siamese. In fact, a member of this delegation has returned. With one arm missing. On the Kra Isthmus, this delegation encountered the Siamese army marching in the opposite direction that they were marching in. After identifying them as an unarmed British delegation, sent from none other than the Penang administration, they were promptly slaughtered, with one person, the informant, left alive to tell the tale. Attached is a picture of Arthur Hayes painted by the Siamese royal court.

Mataram Divorces!!

30/9/1819

In a surprising turn of events, Sultan Hamengkubuwono IV has made an attempt to assassinate Susuhunan Pakubuwono IV! Looks like there is trouble in the newlyweds’ nest. As a result of these tensions, they have split back into Yogyakarta and Surakarta. After just two months of marriage, these two have divorced! Our hopes and dreams lie with them. Who knows what will happen between these two now?

Thai Tea!

17 August 1819

Reports confirm a significant EIC military contingent, equipped from Penang’s armoury, has crossed into Kedah and occupied key positions in Alor Setar. The expedition is led by the ambitious Deputy Resident of Penang, Arthur Hayes, who claims to be acting on “urgent intelligence of an imminent threat to Kedah’s stability.” Bannerman appears to be genuinely blindsided and is absolutely furious, denying any prior knowledge or authorization of Hayes’ reckless adventure. EIC officials in Penang are divided on whether or not to support Hayes. The Sultan of Kedah is effectively a hostage. The Siamese Royal Court, already incensed by the Lingga accusations against the British, are enraged. Many within it are calling for a full-scale invasion of Penang as retaliation. Penang MUST react swiftly.

Cost an arm and a leg…

12 August 1819

The dethroned Sultan Alauddin has just launched a daring assassination attempt on the current Sultan Sharif Saiful Alam Shah during his invasion of the capital city Kutaraja. Unfortunately, the attempt was futile, but Alauddin succeeded in severing Sultan Sharif’s arm completely. 

In the midst of delivering a fatal slash to his leg, Alauddin was caught red-handed by one of Sultan Sharif’s servants who had managed to escape from where he was held captive by Alauddin’s men. The servant had Alauddin at rifle-point, forcing Alauddin to flee for his life. 

Sultan Alauddin has now fled to his makeshift camp at the edge of the capital. With such high risks, the one who strikes first will clinch victory and for all. Who shall it be?

Mataram reunited!

30 July 1819 

Yogyakarta and Surakarta have announced their merger agreement today, reuniting the Mataram sultanate into one coherent polity again after the unnatural split brought about by the Dutch colonial government! People all over central and eastern Java rejoice at the reunion of their ancestral nation. In doing this, the Dutch government’s authority has been completely disregarded, and it remains a matter of time to see how the Dutch reacts to such a blatant move of disobedience from their client states.
