It didn’t matter that Ethan was trying to keep a low profile or that he didn’t really give a shit about politics, unless it affected quidditch, his presence at yet another stuffy, media ridden Gala was practically mandatory. He took some solace in the fact that there would be free booze and the company he kept this evening would be most welcomed. The chaser drew in a quick breath and plastered on a smile, not just for the prying eyes but for Vegas as well. 

“Pssh, of course not, Veg.” Ethan said as he offered Vegas his arm and one of his infamous, mischievous smirks. Joking around always helped him get through these sort of events. “They’re obviously staring at me. Quidditch super star, remember?”

Vegas couldn’t help that smile that blossomed on her face as she was met with one of Ethan’s signature smirks. How like Ethan to know exactly how to  ease her nerves. She had always known his ego-- though not without some justification, which she would not admit lest his head inflate even larger-- was not always grounded in narcissism alone. He wanted to be here perhaps even less than she did, and yet there he was turning the charm on and trying to make her feel better. In fact, he had spent months making sure she was as worry-free as possible. The least she could do for him was attend a stuffy Gala and behave like a proper date rather than draw even further attention.

“Ah--Silly me, how could I forget?” Her tone was playful as she took his arm, tipping her head at him graciously. “I’m sure they were holding their breaths waiting for the Quidditch royalty to arrive--imagine their delight to hear you’ve brought an escaped convict along. Really helps with the bad boy look, aye?”

Vegas took a deep breath upon seeing the crush of bodies filling the Great Hall. Of course, it was comforting that the venue be so familiar--and fitting considering just who she was attending the Gala with--but it would be her first time voluntarily attending such a public (and media-heavy) event since being found in The Fens. She found her hand gripping for Ethan’s wrist without much thought.

“Please tell me I’ve gone mad and I’m just imagining everyone staring.”

Prompt 19- Time Turner

What has your character been doing prior to the time skip? Who and/or what have they been involved with?

After having said her goodbyes to B and Kyu prior to her abduction, Vegas hadn’t really been expecting anyone to be looking for her. Sure, she had regained a best friend in Ethan, but their tumultuous history combined with her butchered sense of self-worth from being in The Fens left her unconvinced that he would even care she was missing. Lo and behold, Ethan came through and was there for her when she came to in the hospital and has kept a watchful eye on her ever since.

Vegas has since all but moved in with Ethan due to his protectiveness and her newfound fear of the dark and setting out alone--not to mention that the increasing safety measures have made moving back home to muggle London rather complicated. There was a slight kerfuffle involving these laws and safety measures when she desperately zoomed home without following protocol to ensure her cats were alive and well, but luckily for her the Ministry took pity on her and allowed Ethan to bail her out of holding. Unluckily for her, this was most likely because they assume her to be mentally unsound after her abduction.

St. Mungo’s shared these sentiments and have been very reluctant to let Vegas return to full-time work, especially in the trauma unit given how recently she herself had been a patient. Slowly they have allowed her to work more and more hours in the most recent months (though realistically it’s more akin to part-time work), but she’s been sequestered away to less exciting departments in the meantime. 

What plots are you looking to involve your character in following the time skip?  What kind of connections are you hoping to build or improve on following the time skip?

Needless to say, Vegas has been going a little stir crazy. As much as she would love to just work the time away to stay preoccupied, she could also use some friends. The whole abduction ordeal has darkened her humor a bit and put the tiniest of stains on her typically optimistic outlook on things, so she’s been struggling with feeling like she matters to anyone other than Ethan and feeling rather dark about herself in general. I think new connections and responsibilities would really boost her confidence! She would absolutely be interested in helping any kind of anti-ministry coalition as a healer and is becoming increasingly frustrated by their stance against muggle integration.

“Getting promoted to the trauma ward! It can be grueling work some days but it keeps me on my toes and it’s incredibly rewarding.”

“Understanding. I think it’s impossible to expect peace to mean all is quiet and well all the time, but if we understand that people come from different places and mindsets and paths of life, it’ll be easier for us to be more kind and compassionate.”

“Unfortunately I shut a lot of people out when I left Puddlemere... I think things would have been a lot less lonely otherwise, I wish I would have dealt with that entire situation with a little more composure.”

“I’m sure there’s plenty, based on the way people look at me like I’ve got three heads sometimes! Maybe it has something to do with the fact that I can’t shut up when I’m nervous?”

Strange(r) Things | Vegas x Delphia

Vegas felt groggy upon waking up, more so than usual at least. Her eyelids felt impossibly heavy, her head seemingly glued to the ground she laid upon. She felt the cold, scratchy ground before she saw it, dragging her fingers along the ground until she could support her weight. The healer pulled herself into a sitting position, slowly blinking her surroundings into sight.

The first thing she noticed was that she did not recognize the room that she was in. More basement or dungeon than a room, it was drab and cold and dank and certainly not Bojing’s apartment. In fact, she wasn’t even sure she remembered making it home following the party.... The thought made her stomach drop and her heart jump into her throat.

The other thing that she noticed (albeit much slower than she would have liked) was that she wasn’t alone. With so little light filtering into the small space, it was hard to determine with tired, foggy eyes just who she was sharing this strange room with. Vegas rubbed her face with the heels of her palms, willing her brain to make sense of things.

Bojing felt his face grow warm. He wasn’t good at this. He never had a girlfriend, nor did he ever care to, but Vegas was different and he didn’t know how to deal with it – especially dressed like that. “I’m – uh – sorry I’m underdressed. I didn’t really have anything Valentine’s-y, then this was so sudden – but I figured I’d be taking off the jacket anyway so it’s not overly bad, right?”

He ran his hands through his hair, sighing with his eyes closed. What a fucking mess he was, all because of a girl. How weird is that? He wished Sooj was there to give him a pep talk or something, she would know what to do. Unfortunately, she was murdered and B had no other friends, unless he wanted to call Sooj’s boyfriend, but that was out of the question.

The Chinese man let the small blonde grab his hand, running his thumb against her soft skin. Before either of them could embarrass themselves further, B wrapped an arm around Vegas and apparated them to the Lestrange-Shacklebolt residence. 

Vegas squeezed Bojing’s hand reassuringly, taking another (somewhat indulgent) glance at his outfit before lifting her head to smile warmly. “I think it’s perfect! You should go in what you’re comfortable in, and Valentine’s is about being with the people you care about, right? So... as far as I’m concerned, that’s Valentine’s-y enough!”

The blonde took a deep breath, unsure at that point where the nauseating apparation symptoms began and the butterflies ended. Once she finally steadied herself and peeled her eyes open, it seemed her breath was stolen from her all over again. If she had thought the Ministry Gala was stunning, she didn’t even know what to call the grandeur of the Lestrange-Shacklebolt estate. As a self-proclaimed holiday enthusiast, Vegas was absolutely delighted by the decor and abundance of themed snacks. The hall itself was beautiful, crammed full of faces both familiar and unfamiliar and bodies already straying towards the dance floor.

“I don’t even know where to start,” the blonde finally exclaimed, eyes comically wide. Her parents had been pretty well-off given their positions in the science field, but she was beginning to learn that wealth meant something entirely different and more extravagant in the wizarding world -- even in those homes such as hers that had been all sterility and sadness. 

Once again she was filled with the dreadful feeling that she didn’t quite belong, the paranoia that others were watching her making her feel that she stuck out like a sore thumb. She turned to her date expectantly; while he wasn’t exactly the outgoing type, she knew he had more experience with high society than she ever would.  “What do fancy wixen even do at these kinds of parties?”

Byeong had been to one too many balls and galas in his time, keeping appearances and trying to make his toxic family look good in front of the public eye, but he had never been one for fun. Parties were too much of a headache for him. Too many people he didn’t like acting like idiots and saying it was because they were drunk or high or whatever lame excuse they had to be stupid. But Vegas wanted to go and she knew Byeong couldn’t say ‘no’ to her big puppy eyes, even when he suggested they go somewhere quieter for a date. Plus, he was scared of something happening to Kyu when he was gone – he was a squib, after all.

So, there he sat, hoping he didn’t look too casual. Byeong didn’t have much for clothes, he originally was only supposed to be there for a week or two, his closet had business suits, sweats, and leather. There was no in-between. Even with his money, he wasn’t going to buy anything extravagant he was going to wear once. Instead, he went with a happy medium: a grey button-up shirt tucked into a pair of black khakis, topped off with one of his favorite leather jackets. 

He played with the rings on his fingers, bearly registering the movement upstairs or hearing the farewell Sam had given him moments ago. It wasn’t until Vegas’ voice broke the silence that he looked up, trying his best to keep his mouth shut when he saw the petite blonde making her way down the stairs. Sure, he had seen her in a pretty dress during Halloween when she dressed as a snitch, but at the time he didn’t pay much attention to anything but his drink. Now, he couldn’t rip his eyes off of her. 

“Uhh –” he gulped, running a hand through his silver locks, “ – yeah, I’m ready, you?”

It wasn’t until Vegas exhaled at B’s response that she realized she had even been holding her breath. His gaze on her wasn’t uncomfortable by any mean -- after all, she had spent all that time getting ready with Sam for this very reaction -- but now that she had his attention she found herself blanking. It certainly didn’t help that he looked like that... the fact that it was seemingly effortless was even more devastating after she had put so much fuss into her own outfit. She was worried she might even be a bit overdressed, but she trusted Sam’s judgement and she knew if she kept second-guessing herself they would never even make it to the party. Besides, the only person she was really interested in impressing was already right in front of her.

“You look so good!” Vegas gushed, the words falling from her mouth before she could stop herself. She attempted damage control, only proving to make more of a fool of herself. “Not that you don’t always look great, but -- you know--” she gestured in his general direction with her hands, “That is... new. Good new! But new...”

She reached her hand out, having long since overcome her fear of initiating contact with him after the many night terrors he had pulled her out of and the even greater number of times she had napped her concussion away curled up against him on the couch. “We should probably go or I’m going to just keep embarrassing myself..”

Eira felt slightly more at ease now that she had realized it was Vegas and not someone she barely knew. She’d barely seen the other Healer lately, probably because of all the chaos with the Rally and everything else. It was nice to be able to spend time with a work friend outside of work. They didn’t need to run at any second to help a patient, or watch what they say because a nosy coworker or boss could be just around the corner.

“Yeah, well…” Eira didn’t have a response, she really had been zoning out and not paying attention at all. She wasn’t used to being like that, she used to be so focused, so intense. She didn’t get surprised, but ever since the events at Hogsmeade, she’d been out of it, emotionally and mentally. It was strange. 

“Define hangin’ in there.” She replied dryly, finishing her drink as she glanced around the room again. “I never thought I’d say it, but I want a relationship.” She shivered and pretended to gag, before smiling slightly at Vegas. “And you? How’ve you been?”

“You? Voluntarily spending excessive amounts of time with another human?”

Vegas tilted her head, a teasing smile playing on her lips. She couldn’t blame her friend, of course. Seeing all the happy couples (and not so happy couples playing the part) had certainly set the fire of envy ablaze in her chest. Was it really so selfish to want that for herself? She wouldn’t have thought so if Eira had been in her shoes... but there was much at stake and the fear of losing B and Kyu outweighed her desire to press the matter any further. The healer was happy to know she wasn’t the only one feeling wistful. “I get it though...”

She rolled her eyes at Eira’s dramatic display, happy to be back in her presence. Her coworker’s humor and no-bullshit attitude was comforting, especially given all that had happened in the past few weeks. With Eira there was no frills -- no pity or feigned interest in her well-being. Their friendship was decidedly real and grounding for the blonde, and so she didn’t mind letting the charade she played for everyone else slip around her.

“It’s been... tough. Bossman and Kyu have been great, but I feel like I’m becoming more trouble than I’m worth. How do you ask someone if they’re ready to kick you out yet without sounding ungrateful?”

Everyone had their vices. Some enjoyed the occasional glass of chardonary after a tiresome day at the office, others a bit more on weekends and holidays. Some partook in more scandalous activities such as gambling and narcotics, sometimes those more moral vices of laziness and arrogance. Even a high society darling like Vivienne had a vice. For her, the ultimate guilty pleasure and weakness was macrons. It was the one sweet treat, despite her mother’s protests, that Vivienne simply couldn’t resist even when she was supposed to watching her “girlish” figure. 

Vivienne had been so busy with fussing over the party details, and mingling with her guests, that she gone almost the whole evening without indulging in her favorite sweet treat. From across the room, she eyed the dessert table and excused herself from a conversation with a ministry official who seemed to be drunk off his own vice. The time had finally come for Vivienne to enjoy herself leaving the party hosting duties to the house elves who would, of course, be paid handsomely for all their extra hard work. 

She scurried over to the dessert table and positioned herself beside a woman in rather lovely pink dress taking note of her happily filing her plate. “Oh, you must try the macrons.” Vivienne smiled warmly, excited to see her guest enjoying themselves. “They are simply divine!”

Vegas jumped, desserts nearly tumbling from her hands as the hostess quite literally startled her from her selection. Sheepishly, she turned to admit her guilt when she was met by a dazzling smile. While she hadn’t talked to the heiress much prior to the party, the few interactions they had shared had been pleasant, and by her suggestion the healer suspected she wasn’t judging her too terribly for her snack hoarding. 

“I don’t think I’ve ever had one!” The blonde looked over the array of treats once more, only slightly embarrassed to have been caught red handed by the very woman responsible for putting together such a spread.  “There are so many things I haven’t tried yet, it was so hard to pick just one! You’ve really done such a beautiful job. 

You’re Vivienne, right? I don’t think we’ve been properly introduced! I’m--” Vegas quickly began to maneuver the treats to one hand, a few balancing rather precariously on the plate as she extended her free hand to the hostess with a soft chuckle, “Vegas Adelaide.”
