      ITACHI DIDN’T ARGUE; HE DIDN’T EVEN FLINCH. He hadn’t expected anything different, and he wasn’t entirely sure he wanted the scenario to play out any other way regardless. Itachi would be a lone wolf indeed, his own brother on his own path. He was proud, but, even more, he was relieved. Sasuke would be better off building his own life -- without the ghosts of his past haunting him. Still, Itachi felt sorrow & loneliness. “You can stay for a while longer if you’d like,” he said, “whenever or however long you want. But I understand if you feel you need to go.”

ITACHI’S INTELLIGENCE & FUTURE IN KONOHA - HEADCANON.

It’s no surprise that Itachi is gifted scholarly, having graduated top of his class at age 8, and joining the Anbu Black OPs at age 13. Itachi’s intellectual prowess is his biggest tool. Aside from having used it for war & peace tactics, he takes pride in the things he can do. He can read hundreds of pages of books within a day - and retain the information of nearly everything he’d read. He deeply enjoys exploring the psyche, mental conditioning, and how violence manifests differently in people. From handling people like Danzo to Madara, he is, as a result, interested in exploring how that violence manifests in different forms. Some result in authoritarian, dogmatic rule, and others create ideologies intended to create peace yet nonetheless have their roots in aggression. In particular interest to Itachi is the sharingan, and how future generations of the Uchiha clan can curb the visceral response to hatred. Perhaps even substitute it for love. 

In the years to come, as he attempts to forgive himself for the atrocities he committed, he is eventually assimilated into Konohagakure. Of course he is still visibly uncomfortable with himself & his sudden acceptance into the Leaf, he nonetheless falls back into what he thinks to be a goal bigger than him: research. Itachi, above all, loves reading, analyzing, and researching. He dedicates his life to his work, particularly in finding a help to the Uchiha’s curse of hatred. Of course it’s difficult, with a limited amount of subjects to test, but he persists anyway. Perhaps he’ll find the solution one day, but he’s made progress nonetheless. 

In his free time, you can find him exploring philosophy and psychology, perhaps even writing. This is Itachi’s mode of release & happiness, and it’s the only thing he can cling onto in order to keep him from reliving nightmares. He’d finally found a will to power that isn’t nestled in protecting peoples from the Akatsuki, and asking his own brother to hate him in order to kill him. He finally thinks he can move on. In wanting to express his love for education further, he thinks about opening higher education schools around Konoha, and help others begin specialization in areas outside of fighting. Perhaps he’ll even be the professor of some of these highly regarded schools.

      “ON THE CONTRARY, IT WAS QUITE PAINFUL.” He stared blankly at Orochimaru, eyebrows furrowed in contemplation. Itachi couldn’t sense any threat during their exchange, though he was confused nonetheless - and with reason. Orochimaru may very well be the only one who’d know how to revive Itachi; he was a skilled scientist indeed. “I woke up alone, in the middle of a forest, without villages around for days.” Itachi spared him the emotional details of his mental state upon awakening, though aware Orochimaru knew of the truth about the Uchiha massacre. Regardless, he preferred to leave some things unsaid. “It wasn’t bad, as you say. At least not physically. But it wasn’t the most welcoming awakening either.” He spoke honestly, and with no particular feelings towards the snake sage. Their feud over the years spent in the Akatsuki never meant anything to Itachi, nor did he want it to. Itachi wanted peace, and he’d gladly take it if Orochimaru offered it. Currently, he could sense no harm that could come of this exchange. “I don’t want much from you, Orochimaru-san, other than to ask you keep quiet of my being alive.”

   There was something in the air and it wasn’t the smell of red bean soup. It was the loud cry of a crow, the violent flapping of its wings. The sound of a larger bird looming over it with a slightly wider wingspan –a raven–. A scenario like this was some sick sort of parable. The raven was ordered to protect meanwhile the crow wanted the opposite. What made it even odder ? This wasn’t just any crow. Something was going to happen. Disappearing from the ground and into the safety of the trees, he silently watched. 

The atmosphere had changed — the birds had stopped singing, the forest creatures had stopped moving. Malice and animosity hung in the air that it made the hairs on his arms stand on end. There was also the feel of a…wary but gentler presence, mysterious. Black eyes narrowed before his hand gripped the hilt of his tanto. Whoever was making their way towards the village wasn’t looking for a peaceful place to stay.

      ANALYTICAL EYES SCOURED THE AREA, looking for signs of intruders or anyone who may be looking to plot against the Akatsuki, when suddenly he froze in his place. A crow defensively flees, a symbol of his fear and confusion. It flew -- FLEW towards the source of Itachi’s fear, descending sharply to the presence of a familiar yet strange chakra. But the source disappeared, into the camouflage of the trees.

      The exchange had been brief, but it left Itachi stunned from head to toe, unable to move. It was impossible. Impossible. The only thing to snap him back into reality was the return of his crow, relaying the information it’d gathered through the Sharingan.

      As if compelled by an external force, he headed in the direction of the chakra. The area was open, and whomever had been hidden could surely see him now. Itachi felt paralyzed, the rhythm of his breath shortening as he listened carefully, refusing to miss a sign -- even the beat of his heart was loud, and he’d wished he could lower its volume. It’d been years since the night of the massacre; although he’d push the sadistic night into the deep recesses of his mind, this presence brought the memories up tenfold. The chakra wasn’t sinister, nor would it harm him. But it made him feel guilty; and, for the first time since that fatal night, Itachi felt shocked to his core. 

      “I know you’re out there. I can feel you.” His voice sounded composed, but his inner turmoil was not. He didn’t mention a name, and he didn’t want to. Mentioning the name meant admitting to himself what he felt, and Itachi hoped it wasn’t what he thought it was. That someone was playing a TRICK on him.

      In truth, Itachi didn’t know why he stood here now, bear & open for enemies to find him -- enemies he was no longer fixated on nor attempting to detect. If any of the members could see him now, they’d sense dishonesty, and would learn of his betrayal. His manners truly seemed out of character for what the Akatsuki knew him to be -- resolved, isolated, and cold. Right now, he looked barren and guilty. It was truly rare to catch him fazed like he had been now.

      GUILT,  PARANOIA,  &  TERROR  STRIKES  THROUGHOUT  HIS  BODY,  threatening  to  suspend  control,  faced  with  a  moment  he  was  never  -  nor  would  he  ever  be  -  ready  for.  he  studies  the  other’s  face,  though  to  no  analytical  avail.  only  two  years  had  passed  since  he  woke  up,  confused  &  dumbstruck  in  a  forest,  alone.  it  wasn’t  unnatural  for  itachi  to  assume  sasuke  was  the  rinne  rebirth’s  wielder.  perhaps  he’d  managed  to  avoid  death  --  or  worse,  forced  someone  to  die  in  his  place.  there  weren’t  many  people  with  a  reason  to  bring  itachi  back.  madara,  maybe,  but  he  died,  and  it  was  unlikely  regardless.  itachi  figured  it  could  only  be  one  person.  their  inevitable  encounter  haunted  itachi  like  a  ghost  that  would  never  leave,  and  persist  even  after  the  confrontation,  itachi  predicted.  but  it  begged  the  question  -  had  sasuke  found  out  the  truth  about  itachi?  he  wasn’t  sure,  though  it  didn’t  appear  so.  his  expression  was  far  too  disinterested  for  that.  often  times,  itachi  had  nightmares  about  sasuke  &  his  intentions  for  reviving  him.  maybe  to  torture him  --  death  was  swift  &  merciless  for  the  crimes  he’d  committed,  and  the  damage  he’d  left  on  sasuke’s  psyche.  as  he  looked  at  him  now,  itachi  hated  himself.  but  he  wouldn’t  show  it.  “well,  what  do  you  want?”  though  his  emotions  were  in  turmoil,  his  composure  was,  in  the  end,  maintained.  itachi’s  tone  was  empty  &  features  dropped  all  feeling.  “did  you  revive  me,  only  in  the  end,  to  kill  me  again?  flaunt  for  power  like  i  once  wanted  you  to?”  there  were  hints  of  villain  in  his  mannerisms,  a  habit  that  persisted  in lieu  of  how  itachi  last  remembered  himself  &  how  sasuke  last  remembered  him;  as  the  power  -  driven,  psychopathic,  genocidal  older  brother.  as  itachi  recalled  it,  he  was  akin  to  a  devil  the  last  time  he  knew  sasuke.  and  as  such,  he  acted  that  way  too.  perhaps  it  was  a  defense  mechanism,  but  perhaps  he  felt  he  had  to  -  in  order  to  further  sell  the  image  he’d  died  attempting  to  preserve  for  sasuke.

      “HATAKE KAKASHI OF THE SHARINGAN.” The encounters were inevitable, Itachi knew. He couldn’t hide much longer. He’d managed to for years, but time was up, it seemed. And although he wouldn’t admit it, Itachi was TIRED of running. The constant paranoia, reliving his nightmares in isolation. Loneliness began destroying him. Humans were, after all, social creatures at heart. “Only now you no longer possess the same eyes you once did.” He noted. He’d relinquished himself of the Sharingan -- why? “Nor are you the simple sensei I once met all those years ago,” Itachi gestured towards the hat, its symbol signifying only one thing. “What do you want?” The Uchiha wouldn’t accuse Kakashi of reviving him. He didn’t have enough power. Not especially without the Sharingan. But it begged the question as to how -- and why -- he’d found him.

ITACHI’S TRAUMA - HEADCANONS.

Following the massacre of the Uchiha clan, this left a deep wound in Itachi’s heart. Though the symptoms of the event wouldn’t process until some time, the significance of the events could not be more understated by Kishimoto himself. Itachi was but a developing teenager when he was forced to strike against his clan, though he was undoubtedly manipulated & abused by the Konoha elders and Danzo. Over the years following the event, he began unpacking the events that happened, sometimes overcome by his nightmares. His heart ached for what he’d done to Sasuke, but there had been no turning back -- no way of explaining nor justifying what he’d done, and it was easier to continue allowing Sasuke to hate him instead. The things he’d been forced to do that night haunted him like a ghost for years, but the only thing that kept him from falling apart was knowing Sasuke would come to kill him.

After Itachi is revived, all the memories of the events came back full force and without mercy. He was alive this time -- and there was no escaping it. He hated himself and what he’d done to his family, though he knew it was in order to protect the peace that was meant to be instilled by Konoha. He remained in isolation, without telling anyone of his existence -- not even Sasuke. The era of peace attempted to dominate, and he stood aside as it did, suffering in his own hell. The nightmares, the hallucinations, the paranoia, the guilt... it all ate at him whilst he wallowed in agony. This was to be his true punishment for forsaking his clan. A well-deserved one too, Itachi rationalized.
