not to be a dirty commie or anything but i don't think any one person should have enough money to solve world hunger and then get to decide not to
I think the reason why our generation feels so connected to project Hail Mary is because it’s about someone who doesn’t want to be sacrificed, but they have been, and all they want is to live.
That’s very much how I feel about the state of everything. Generations before mine made choices and I’m the sacrifice with the environment, the economy, and social movements.
When I was in high school my uncle told me it’s “up to your generation to solve these issues.” All I could think was ‘excuse me?? I’m not even old enough to vote? Why don’t you do something about it??’
You have money, you have voting power, you have time to be socially aware of these issues - why it is up to me, a high schooler, to solve.
Why do I have to be the consequence to your actions?
Project Hail Mary is a movie about hope. It’s a movie about how fucked someone is by another person’s choice and how even though it’s awful YOU have to do something about it. It’s about how you can’t just lay down and die.
It really resonates with me- with how fucked everything feels I want desperately to give up, but unfortunately I’m a good person and I will try to make things better.
I think the other message to take away from this movie is that change takes time. Since the Hail Mary was launched to the time the beetles returned is over a decade. Yes everything feels like it’s going to shit right now, but our actions will have an impact. Change takes time and the sooner we recognize the problems and start working on the solutions the sooner the problem will be resolved. And we are making changes! I really believe we are. We will create a world we want to live in again.
… anyway I’ll get off my soap box now.

Oooh! This is actually longtime Popeye character Cylinda Oyl. Olive Oyl's sister in-law. She was always subculture. Used to be a flapper.
In recent comics, when Randy Milholland of Something Positive took over, she very deliberately went goth and also they started to draw her with dark skin.
Also of note is that Popeye was apparently raised in a black family in this run as seen by his foster dad Whaler Joe and Marine Biologist Student sister Petunia here.
Also, the Sea Hag's nonbinary intern is dating Olive's apparently bisexual cousin Sutra.
Popeye... is woke fr... not just amateurnouns?!
With my birthday soon, thinkin about the passage of time.
Comic artist StupidTwink said it well "it does suck we dont have enough actual old women to call trans elders that we have to resort to using it on women who are not yet middle-aged"

Beep boop! I look for accidental haiku posts. Sometimes I mess up.
There are far too few posts about this film on this hellsite (affectionate), so here's my addition. This is one of my favourite parts that gets me every time I watch it (along with the solidarity marches ofc).
it’s funny bc I think I have a lot to learn, with blindspots that I’m still trying to fill in by reading more and talking to people etc, but when I’m hanging around certain family members I suddenly become The Wokest Person Alive just by merit of having made some attempt to not be shitty. and this isn’t level 3 discourse like “conflating submissiveness with a preference for bottoming is misogynistic”, it’s basic shit like “no, health is not a state of mind, and sick people are sick for reasons beyond bad attitude,” and “no, you should not loudly talk about how shocked you were that a Nigerian man was at grandma’s funeral,” and “please don’t say that about Jewish people,” and so on.
and usually they are willing to listen when I talk about this stuff, so there is a benefit to me being there, but holy crap is it a tonal shift going from online to real life.
I think your perfect dog is in Arizona.
