Date: December 31st, 1991.
Just a little quick thing that I very quickly whipped up.
Initially, when Tereza dropped off Juraj at the train station, she would drive off with a quick goodbye. But she couldn’t do that, so now she stood beside him in the open air, waiting for his train to Bratislava.
She was waiting for him to say something; heaven knows she couldn’t.
“Tereza.” Juraj started, “I know how hard this is.” Tereza scoffed, “Of course you do. You’re always the one leaving.”
Juraj took a deep breath; he didn’t want to leave for an argument. “Tereza, I need to find me. I need to find myself without you attached.” Juraj admitted, “I know it hurts, but this will be good for both of us.”
Tereza looked at him; for her whole life, she had defended Juraj. When they were Moravia and Nitria, Bohemia and Upper Hungary, and finally, they came together as Czechoslovakia just in time for Slovakia to start a self-discovery journey.
They had been through a lot together, and now he was abandoning her; this time, he wasn’t returning. How ‘alright’ is she supposed to feel?
But, Silvestr was upon them. It was time to start a new chapter in Tereza’s life, whether she liked it or not. Change was coming, and dwelling on it would be of no use. It was hard, but there was no stopping it.
Tereza offered Juraj a handshake. “Good luck, Slovakia.” Juraj shook her hand, “Same to you, Czechia.”
Juraj’s train pulled into the station. “Goodbye, Tereza.” He said, picking up his bags once again. “I won’t really be gone for long. I’ll return to get the rest of my stuff in a few days.” Juraj explained.
Juraj had already walked up to the train before he stopped and looked back at her for a minute before recklessly abandoning his bags to run at her and pull her into a bone-crushing hug.
Tereza grumbled and rolled her eyes, but she didn’t really mind. “Okay, okay, I get it, you big goof. I will miss you.”
Juraj breathed in Tereza for the last time. With a final wave, he pulled away from her and boarded his train.
Off to his new chapter without her.
