"I have passed through many forms." An idle musing, reminiscing on ages gone by. "I started my existence as a mere spirit, a haunting. Possessing humans and driving them to mindless violence."
A swirl of bloodwine, and the sorcerer looks into his cup with a smile. He doesn't remember much of his younger years, only flashes of images and sensations left in the very depths of his core, but the satisfaction of his actions never truly left him.
"As I began to grow in the awareness of Men, I grew more powerful... and eventually found myself with a physical form, that of a monstrous Oni." This is were his recollection truly begins, although concrete thoughts were still in their infancy. He was a very basal being, caring only for the suffering he may cause, learning massacre by massacre what made humans tick... until misguided souls sought him out and he learned new ways of inflicting misery. "My proportions were skewed, fangs and teeth and horns adorned my visage, a mockery of a human being. I see it as my infancy."
Ah, but his childish antics eventually got him banished to the Netherrealm... and that is where he met Shinnok.
"The form you see now was a gift given to me. I was remade in the image of Lord Shinnok - it made me more dexterous, it made me more cunning. Apt for being his second in command, capable of a gentle hand, allowing me to pursue my studies more diligently. I truly cherish the opportunities it has brought me."
And yet, still, he is that same vicious Oni beneath it all.

let quan chi give your muse a massage. he'll disassemble and assemble them so good. factory reset. just as he can tear you limb from limb can he find every point of tension in your body and work it out. shinnok certainly took advantage of the offer, kept his crumbling body spry and flexible for kombat.
there is a lot that i can say about quan chi holding the power he does in sorcery alone, and yet still choosing to enact violence with his own bare hands. the physicality of him personally tearing you limb for limb is something he does for nothing but the sheer pleasure of the act, the perverse excitement in knowing he is ending a life with nothing but strength alone. might makes right. i joke that he is too skinny in mk1 but that is because i feel like they leaned too hard into the sorcerer aspect without giving any space for the sheer brutality he expresses in other timelines. his magic killings are no less gruesome, but they're certainly not as personal as holding onto you as you tear in half, or physically beating you with your own torn off leg. it goes to show that to his core, he is a demon, and as civilized as he may play being, senseless violence still sates an innate hunger in him.
Blood seeps into every crack in his ever dry skin, contrasts sharply against his pallid complexion. He has been interrupted in the middle of one of his most precious hobbies, it seems, stitching together a mangled beast to revive into a fleeting, agonizing existence.
"I pride myself in being a welcoming hostโฆ but one should be invited before they can be considered a guest."
He does not drop what he is doing, not immediately, and instead keeps his hands busy, sawing through bone and ligament as he was - but his eyes focus entirely on his newfound company. He could do this by touch, his eyes closed, an intrinsic understanding of anatomy necessary for such high levels of necromancy.
"Have you come to scorn or to plead?"
"Isn't it funny that I'm right here and you can't do anything to me right now?"
ANTAGONISM โ MEETINGS
Appearances are as important of a tool as any when it comes to building relations and earning the trust of those he seeks to sell his services to, and his position as master necromancer, a sorcerer with full control of his underlings is not something he takes lightly.
It is a point of pride, his reputation precedes him whenever he graces the realms with his presence. He is feared and respected, all of it for good reason.
But behind the curtains of the show he stages for others, at times he does have to work to keep his pawns behaving as they should. All by design, of course, as he finds amusement in watching their natural personalities be warped by his magics, but this leeway does give them the space to misbehave at times, as a mischievous pet would.
And the ghoulish wraith standing to his side is the most difficult to wrangle, even if by design their interests align - such is the fate orchestrated by Quan Chi himself, Noob Saibot is a creature that thrives on misery, with no other permissible target, he seeks to embarrass his master.
"We will speak once we return to the fortress." His tone is curt, and it is clear something torturous awaits the shadow wraithโฆ of course, such endeavors serve only to sate the sorcerer's desire for violence, as the wraith hardly feels pain at all as it stands - does not make it comfortable to go through either way.
He could sigh, were he a lesser being, he so appreciates how easy Scorpion is to reign in when he spends time with Noob Saibot. And yet, he'd change nothing at all, considering him perfected - like a favorite pet, he can do no wrong no matter how much he acts out and misbehaves.

"Your appearance is... unexpected." Quan Chi speaks each syllable of the word as if he were tasting it, seeing if it pleases him or not. It was a surprise, but not an entirely unwelcome one. Certainly was an interesting sight to have one of Sparda's spawns find his way here. "Please excuse the mess, but I was preparing for a feast."
A table ready, dishes upon dishes resting a top of it, an extravagance few could afford so deeply in these layers of hell. Meat, fresh produce, fruit, cheeses and wine. He would eat until he had his fill and then the scraps would go to his wraiths and revenants - a privilege unearned by their part, but he was ever so gracious.
"Business or pleasure?" Quan Chi asks, a smarmy glint to his eye. "Whichever it may be, I would be a poor host to not invite you to indulge. An honor on my part - it has been some time since I have hosted for Sparda... and now, his legacy."

"You look weary, young Empress." The observation is spoken lowly, almost soothingly, the low timbre of his voice part of what makes him so captivating to listen to. "I find the loyalty of your subjects lacking if they do not find it in them to make sure you are taken care of."
Always the opportunist, having once been in Shao Kahn's council, Quan Chi saw to it that he was there when Mileena was made Kahn should she be in need of his services.
She however so far showed little interest in sorcery and magic, even if it was by it that she was created... Disappointing, but not the end of the world. He knows many ways to charm and gain favors, to climb the ranks until he is assured a seat in the council as a royal confidant.
"Could I interest you in a feast at my fortress? I feel you are in need of sustenance... one which your subjects might find contest to. All at my expense, I assure you. It would give me an opportunity to show how loyal and well-behaved I can make my undead serfs."
