MLK was assassinated just over 50 years ago
He'd be 91 if he were alive today
Don't ever let them trick you into thinking this was a long time ago
His older sister is still alive.
Take a look at this picture:
When do you think it was taken? 20s? Maybe 30s?
Nope! It was taken in 1960 — the little girl, Ruby Bridges, had to be escorted through waves of protestors all yelling and throwing things. She’s 65 years old currently... about the same age as my own grandmother.
So yeah. This wasn’t a hundred years ago. It’s not “over”.
I feel like this is pretty important to realize: the cops are becoming exhausted, and there’s a limited supply of them. NYPD has every cop on duty working full days every day. We have an unlimited capacity to rotate in fresh fighters that they simply do not have. We can take shifts. They can’t.
This is also why we’re starting to see bare minimum concessions now. The powers that be have realized they’ve made a grave miscalculation. A week into it, and ideas that seemed utterly impossible even a month ago are on the table- LA is talking about a hundred and fifty million dollar budget cut for the LAPD, every cop directly involved in George Floyd’s murder has been arrested and Chauvin’s charge has been raised to second degree murder, parts of the Minneapolis city council is pushing to permanently disband the Minneapolis police department.
What could we win with two weeks? Three? An organized general strike that brings the entire economy to a crashing halt? It is difficult to feel hopeful in such brutal times, but there is profound hope to be had in the realization that a week of getting our asses kicked has advanced the mainstream narrative around police so much further than electoralism would’ve dared to dream in 100 years.
FRIENDLY NEIGHBOURHOOD PUNK ASS ARCHIVIST HERE WITH A MESSAGE
if you cannot protest or donate, and you’ve been retweeting and reblogging your ass off, here’s another thing you can do from home to help out later on down the line.
we are dealing with a fascist police state. fascists love nothing more than controlling the media and taking away primary sources of their evildoing, so lets take some steps toward taking that power away from them.
the wayback machine is a tool from the internet archive, a nonprofit website that seeks to capture websites as they change over time. the wayback machine is free to use and will be able to help protect all of the first-person accounts of the crimes being committed by the state during these protests for human rights.
this is what the homescreen of the wayback machine looks like:
that blue circle is where you put a permalink to a tweet you want to add to the wayback machine
that red circle is how you find the permalink to a tweet. click “copy link to tweet” and put it in the blue circle above, and there you have it! save what you see. don’t let anyone take away all of the documentation of these crimes the state has committed and declare it fake news.
fuck the cops. fuck orange mussolini. fuck racists, and fuck fascist government regimes.
dont forget: there’s nothing more punk than voting, libraries, and loving each other.

I want everyone to know that I support love and equality. People have gotten upset at me for being “political”, but supporting basic human rights shouldn’t be a political issue. No one should have to be afraid because of their gender, race, religion, sexual orientation, nationality, etc. I am only spreading positivity, happiness, and love with my art, and I will continue to do so even if people disagree with that. Edit: I am so touched by everyone’s positive support. Thank you all so so much for your comments, replies, and messages. Sometimes I feel like I’m throwing my thoughts into the void, and it’s so meaningful to me when people send positivity back. Much love as always!
This never stops becoming relevant. I just donated to the Minnesota Freedom Fund - other important causes are Reclaim the Block and Black Visions if you can support them!
It horrifying how black Americans are treated in this country! Police shoulden’t be held above the law. George Floyd’s murderer was rightfully charged but it doesn’t change the fact that this still happens too often.
It really says something about America when BLM protesters get shot with rubber bullets and tear gas but white quarantine rioters don’t.

Every person on the planet should see this
I’ve seen the Ursula K LeGuin quote about capitalism going around, but to really appreciate it you have to know the context.
The year is 2014. She has been given a lifetime achievement award from the National Book Awards. Neil Gaiman puts it on her neck in front of a crowd of booksellers who bankrolled the event, and it’s time to make a standard “thank you for this award, insert story here, something about diversity, blah blah blah” speech. She starts off doing just that, thanking her friends and fellow authors. All is well.
Then this old lady from Oregon looks her audience of executives dead in the eye, and says “Developing written material to suit sales strategies in order to maximize corporate profit and advertising revenue is not the same thing as responsible book publishing or authorship.”
She rails against the reduction of her art to a commodity produced only for profit. She denounces publishers who overcharge libraries for their products and censor writers in favor of something “more profitable”. She specifically denounces Amazon and its business practices, knowing full well that her audience is filled with Amazon employees. And to cap it off, she warns them: “We live in capitalism. Its power seems inescapable. So did the divine right of kings. Any human power can be resisted and changed by human beings. Resistance and change often begin in art. Very often in our art, the art of words.”
Ursula K LeGuin got up in front of an audience of some of the most powerful people in publishing, was expected to give a trite and politically safe argument about literature, and instead told them directly “Your empire will fall. And I will help it along.”
We stan an icon.

SP, hands on cheeks, excited: “Gah! Are they about to have a revelation?!”
Third panel:
FP: “It’s almost as if…as if…”
Second Person: “…capitalism is destroying the planet! Say it! Say it!!!”
Fourth Panel
FP, aghast: “…as if we’re the virus!”
SP, about to throw brick: “People are dying you piece of shit!”
