In the shifting mound that is The Internet, do you ever wonder about the ultimate ending of it all? When society as a whole decides the Internet to be too far gone—as it becomes an ouroboros of AI generated content and companies bleeding creators until it's no longer profitable for them, beneficial for them, or otherwise impossible to reach a good audience, which is something we're seeing the consequences of today, where some creators need to push aside their values, (perhaps somewhat like you commented on in Clickbait Values: Losing My Integrity) to be able to "make it," playing characters and bits for so long people forget the "real person" behind the screen—I begin to wonder if 'integrity' is even a concept valued in this rotting culture.
Thoughts?
Ooo great ask (sorry it took so long for me to get to it). I actually started my channel when an american bill was introduced that would effectively 'kill' the internet as we knew it. It failed to pass but the idea of the internet that I loved 'dying' filled me with dread. It made me realize how fragile cultures and communities can be and how quickly they can be ripped away and that finally gave me the courage to make my first video about the internet.
Since then the internet has 'died' twenty times over. I think at one point a different version of the bill that motivated the creation of the channel did end up passing. I think in a great many ways the internet has grown worse- but almost all of the original qualities that made me afraid of losing the internet are still there too.
Ultimately, for better or worse, you decide which parts of the internet are important to you. While large corporations will likely always be causing some form of enshittification while they try to extract value from this magical place, you have the ability to surround yourself with people who will fight back.
I'm much less worried about AI then I once was. While I don't think it's going away, seeing the anti-ai culture develop so rapidly (and in some cases maybe even too aggressively) has given me a lot of hope.
Yes there's like a whole section of the internet population who are now being constantly being chewed up and shat out by the ai oroboros, but I'm also seeing people growing bored and choosing to exit that space entirely. I'm seeing more people considering and discussing art philosophy then ever before- because they can tell something has changed and that they don't like it. Maybe I'm only seeing this because I'm looking for it but I've found that pursuit is essential for enjoying your time in this place. It's all just a big kingdom of glass- impressive maybe even beautiful but also very temporary. None of it is going to be here forever so try to find and create as much joy as you can.
whenever i see people call random edgy but not-at-all harmful artists "degens" i would like to refer them to the first sentence of wikipedia's "degenerate art" article
Reminder that this is the type of art the nazis were referring to:
(Kandinsky)
You cannot "well but I'M not referring to that kind of art, I only mean Dirty Pictures" your way out of this. You are being harmful and need to stop, not rationalise why it's okay for YOU to be doing it. You need to understand
censorship violates the universal human right of free expression and freedom of speech.
fiction is not reality. Fictional characters are not real people.
if someone SAYS a work of fiction inspired them to do bad things, that is not the work of fiction's fault. The person who did bad things is STILL at fault, because they have free will and must be assumed to understand the consequences of their actions.
discomfort is not harm. If a piece of art makes you uncomfortable, that's actually fine. That's the POINT of certain pieces of art. You need to learn to tolerate discomfort.
It is not in fact the government's job to enforce a set of morals on people. That violates people's universal human right to freedom of religion and creed.
There is no such thing as "just a little bit of" censorship.
It does not matter what kind of art it is, when you use the term degenerate to refer to art you don't like, you are using a word that is deeply rooted in bigotry. A word used to target marginalized groups.
“is deeply rooted in bigotry. A word used to target marginalized groups” oh fuck off
Claiming everything was originally a racist slur is such a tired fucking trope now. Degens are not POC for fucks sake.
“Degen” is typically white trailer trash methheads or perverts. Then it was picked up by Letterkenny and a ton of wannabe canuks started saying it all the time. Eventually it found its way into the mouths of the dotcommers and they used it describe cryptocurrency traders or some bullshit. Degenerate simply means individuals that either quit evolving or went backwards against evolution.
Christ on a fucking crutch you people are insane. Not everything was about the Nazis and muh margarinealized peeple!
People like OP and those that agree with OP really are doing their damnest to rehabilitate the Nazis.
Degenerate art goes against social order and cohesion, and is typically related to post-modernist thought, which seems to attack truth as a concept. By calling out degenerate art you're keeping us from being weakened psychologically.
"Goes against social order and cohesion" a phrase that's so entirely vague that you might as well just say "any art that makes me feel yucky".
I'm not honestly bothered by people using the word degenerate casually. They might as well be saying 'scoundrel-like behaviour".
But this kind of behavior- saying that 'art that doesn't obviously benefit society' is the stuff you actually have to watch out for. Because when you really break down these arguments the people making them are rarely arguing about what is or isn't good for society.
They're wanting to eliminate any kind of thought or expression that makes THEM uncomfortable and are hoping you don't notice.
You smoke weed, don't you?
I don't, but don't worry- I'm sure there's something I do that you can use as an excuse to avoid thinking about things critically.
coming out of months of no activity to say my gripes with a fandom is very fitting for me i think
One thing I've noted about the Chonny Jash fandom (specifically, the CCCC fandom) is that people forget about what a narrative is supposed to represent—There's always a bigger picture to stories.
I remember a while back, sometime around maybe May of last year, seeing someone string together that Heart wears a blindfold, because they have severe photosensitivity, through not only the MVs, but the lyrics too.
But I think where that post fell short is the actual symbol of the blindfold and what it represents. I encourage all HMSW fans to look deeper into not just the narrative, but the symbols, the literary devices. Treat the album as it is: a story!

I can't stress enough how much I miss StumbleUpon
StumbleUpon once sent me to a supercut of Lion King, Lion King 1 1/2, and Lion King II, the main edit being that the scenes of Lion King and Lion King 1 1/2 were interspersed so that they happened in the order they actually happened.
stumbleupon not existing anymore can be directly traced to a dramatic decline in my mental health, I could do a thesis on it.
bestie stumbleupon very much still exists its just called cloudhiker now. i use it all the time.
mini compilation of suggestions from the replies:
The Bored Button - "Press the Bored Button and be bored no more."
The Useless Web
Cloudhiker - "Discover the most interesting, weird and awesome websites of the Internet" (not really a rebrand, it's a different person running it but they have the same intention in mind)
Astronaut.io - "These videos come from YouTube. They were uploaded in the last week and have titles like DSC 1234 and IMG 4321. They have almost zero previous views. They are unnamed, unedited, and unseen (by anyone but you)."
Marginalia - "This is an independent DIY search engine that focuses on non-commercial content, and attempts to show you sites you perhaps weren't aware of in favor of the sort of sites you probably already knew existed."
