I can’t decide if I want Vestals to wear very specific headgear or not.
umm, so... think it’s my turn to write a 12738822 word essay about bakugan: new vestroia and i think i’ll start with star things this time
the first thing i want to tell you is the fact that many bakugan names were changed during the english adaptation and especially in the second season. it may be a minor change, like here
or even worse, changed fully, like here
why does it matter? because we all know what vega is and what «helios» stands for, don’t we? :)
yes. helios is the sun. vega is the brightest star of the sky & arguably is the second by importance and oh! what an irony, spectra was mentioned so many times by gus as the light, especially in the japanese dub
if spectra is the light of sun about what i say so much (and gus is the moon then- well, you’ve seen in sanya’s post everything), then mylene, who is his rival is vega, isn’t it? the brightest north star, the next by importance from the sun, also – look at it’s color, it’s blue as mylene’s palette!
mylene is cold. even mylene’s palette is. her eyes & hair are light-blue, hued to turquoise. her skin is pale, her attitude is tough, but mostly emotionless. her japanese battler name is «the kiss of death», and death is usually portrayed as something dangerous, cold and pallid, as she is. she is the north star. and the north star doesn’t want to be the second one, so mylene & spectra are fighting between each other – the sun & vega both want to be the most important one.
but it’s not everything! i you, guys, remember that in the episode 47, when lync was about to run away with alternative data, he met mylene
actually, lync’s bakugan was also called after a star!
and yes, it’s in the same constellation with vega. even more, there’s a legend from chinese mythology about altair & vega:
huh, so here we have a boy who wants to meet a girl, but they’re fated to be separated. reminds a lot of exactly lync’s story, isn’t it? lync wanted to be with alice, he’ve got almost caught by mylene & he was murdered by hydron as a result (ouch). chinese mythology is really close to japanese & korean, by the way, you can notice it because of kitsunes/kumihos/huli jings :)

I like to think Vestal has a rash of influencers like we do now, and he has a very rebellious and chaotic persona that attracts a large audience of youths. He competes with Mylene, who is far more refined and into beauty than...whatever bullshit Shadow comes up with to entertain his following

Okay so Spectra...but more dramatic??!!?

I unintentionally made a canon reason for Spectra’s mask possessing only one eye. Going back to mask customs in vestal art, one eye entails a telepath. Guess who’s a telepath?
So dramatic and foreshadowing at the same time.
I’m still working on Vestal Culture, but this sketch turned out so nice that I wanted to share. I fell upon a comic called Aqua Punk in November, and it inspired me to come up with ancient Vestal art. The doodles I did led to me developing traditional costumes with accompanying masks. The idea is, Vestals have a sort of flower language that was used for wall reliefs that depicted stories and historical events. Rather than writing text, the flowers and their positions explained the situation. Above, the two individuals are wearing modern costumes with traditionally crafted masks. The masks are meant to reflect the personal feelings and perspectives of the wearer without them speaking, as well as social status and/or lineage. These masks are simple, and really just depict which one is a liar, which is truthful, and which is the telepath and the telepath’s victim.
I actually fucked up the left guy...the flowers on the mask that exit the mouth are meant to match the flower helmet exactly. If the bouquet (flowers worn as a helmet or on the head at all) matches the spray (the flowers leaving the mouth opening as if it were words), then the individual is telling the truth/staying true to their perspective. Additional details would reveal if the individual is intentionally lying or if they were manipulated (sunflower lady is) or even lying to themselves about a personal truth. I wanted historic Vestal art to be concerned with the dramatic side of stories...like opera and such. Costuming would be more popular in modern day rather than ancient times, and would involve the fancy garb. In art, subjects would really just be flat silhouettes with highly detailed masks, bouquets, and sprays telling the story.
The funky eye also represents the involvement of a telepath, which is regarded as a hostile entity in Vestal culture (on account of telepaths messing with free will and privacy, of which Vestals are very private). The eye, which is called a “presence” in my notes, will appear in the bouquet of a person under the sway of a telepath. A Presence located on a mask marks a telepath, but there may only be one eye, not two. Two eyes on a mask denote a hyper-vigilant or paranoid person. The single eye was intended to give a sly attitude, which correlates with the negative opinion telepaths are held in.
I’m trying to work on a chronology of concepts I want to reveal here so I don’t just drop walls of lore to explain a pic I did two months ago. I also need to plan out tags I’ll use so y’all can look stuff up easily that will eventually get buried.

Night and day difference! I’m practicing digital work again, trying to find a certain style. I really want a cell-shaded feel, but I also recognize I have zero patience for digital. That’s something I want to get over, and doing a more painterly style for now will help me get over that. Here, I still am being impatient because I haven’t even done anything beyond skintone and some…”shading”. Regardless, I’m seeing a more mature image in the first (present) versus the second (apparently it was done in June???2020, but it looks like its from last year).
So, anyway, this is Luce concept work. She’s supposed to be heterochromatic (dramatic flair, really…she’s rich enough for it) and I’m still real uncertain about her hair. I’m leaning towards her swapping wigs because she can. Still WIP, but maybe I’ll be tempted to actually try finishing it?
Definitely changing the dress, but I’m treating it like an under painting for now. I have no idea what color she’d look best in…
