"How can you call Blaine terrible/abusive and then ship Kurt with Sebastian?"
Uh, easily.
Sebastian had no societal obligation to be even remotely nice to Kurt, they were rivals in show choir and for Blaine, not to mention that for every insult Sebastian threw at Kurt, Kurt threw one back. He never seemed hurt by the insult just annoyed which added to Sebastian's lack of realization that his words could hurt people (until Karofsky).
Blaine was Kurt's boyfriend and the expectations that come with that are to be nice, caring, and loving. Blaine tries to force Kurt to have their first time in the back of his car in the parking lot of a bar, despite knowing that Kurt wanted it to be special and romantic. He then yells at Kurt for not being 'Spontaneous and Fun', which yeah he was drunk but that doesn't give him an excuse. He later cheats on, fully cheats on not just the texting thing, on Kurt and tries to blame it on Kurt not being there for him.
Sebastian may have been mean to Kurt but he apologizes and plans to be better, unlike main cast characters we don't see much of that since he's not on screen that often but he is present for the proposal and seems at least civil with the New Directions.
See the idea behind the argument against Kurtbastian is that because Sebastian was mean, something he acknowledged, apologizes for, and promises to improve upon, means that he cannot in any way be shipped with Kurt.
Yet the man that tried to force himself onto him in the back of a car, cheated on him, blamed him for said cheating, tried to guilt him when he made improvements on himself, tried to control who he could be friends with, is considered his soulmate???
Yeah something isn't adding up.

Alright, not to start ranting about Glee again on main, but I’ve sort of thought about this for years and I need to rant.
The writers fumbled the bag so bad with Kurt’s gay storyline in season 1. Mostly it was handled well, especially with Kurt and Burt, HOWEVER, they fell into the stereotypical hole of gay guys being predatory towards straight guys with Kurt’s crush on Finn.
Look, it didn’t have to be that way. It could’ve just been another innocent unrequited crush, but they had Kurt push their parents together to get closer to Finn and the whole them sharing a room together with Finn blowing up and calling Kurt a slur.
Burt calling Finn out was such an incredible scene showing his growth throughout the season, but it’s undercut by Burt later calling Kurt out on his crush on Finn and the audiences knowledge of all that Kurt has done.
Kurt Hummel is my favourite character on the show and I hate how mistreated and sometimes just awfully written he was. For the first season he was the only (out) queer character on the show, and one of the main creators, a gay man, who was a part of creating the character specifically for Chris Colfer, should’ve had more sense in him when writing the character.
Don’t get me started on how they basically used Kurt in later seasons to be a surrogate for their bigoted takes (the biphobia in particular) and using another queer character on the show to basically do a callout scene towards him that was used to just tear the actor apart rather than the character.
My favourites <3
Chris and Dylan need their own show lol
