I guess you can qualify this as a warning that anytime I make an AU where Sonic and Shadow are married, especially if they have kids, they're going to be a little bit out of character, just by default. When I imagine them as a long-term partnership, I don't imagine them canonically doing the whole "settling down, getting married and having kids thing".

I would imagine they become something similar to nomadic travelers who go on adventures together. Post eggman retirement and/or dying in some way, whether it be from some kind of experiment or through old age, even if all their other friends have decided they've giving up the adventure, Sonic and Shadow will continue and they will do it together and that will be the rest of their lives.

But I like to make AUs where my favorite characters kiss and get gay married and have babies, so you're going to have to accept that it is out of character that they would settle down and have children, but I want them to have a gay little family, so you're getting a gay little family and you're gonna like it.

Thinking about Knuckles’ trouble adjusting from warrioring to being a family son with two younger brothers. His anxiety around now protecting someone else, combined with his inability to sleep on a comfortable soft bed leads to him sleeping under people’s beds to both ‘protect’ and be comfortable in his own way.
