Positive Depressions: Final
Untitled
Plaster / Standard Ceramic 213 Porcelain Clay (50 lb) / Lego Figurines / Amiibo
I always loved watching cartoons when I was little. I was more fascinated with how they were made. I thought I could make my own stories with toys and figurines and imprinting them into the plaster. The first depicts a young man going through his day with no care in the world, remaining ignorant of the falling debris. The second shows a couple of kids pointing their goals and ambitions towards higher levels. They wish to rise and shine brighter than the stars in the sky. The factors I would like to improve on this project was make more than two. I brought a lot of figures to utilize and depict loads of stories, but the best I could manage to make were two. Not only that, I definitely should’ve added frames to them.

QCQ #2: X Marks The Spot
Quote: “The specificity of these casts (fossils) as evidence, their testimony to the passage at a particular time and place of the movement of a now vanished animal..”
Comment: Knowing as the casts are fossils, the remains or impression of a prehistoric organism stored in petrified form or as a mold or cast in rock and stored within the lithosphere of our very planet in varied capacity, I see how artists would borrow the idea on utilizing the visual proof of creatures and objects no longer in existence to better understand and know something deceased and extinct. They are created and left behind by nature for us to study. They are the needles in a very humongous haystack for us to search and find as visual proof of things no longer in existence. Seeing as Allan McCollum’s artistic intention is to cycle back to the issue of casting by a relationship with the very most classical enunciation of the matrix or original as a kind of ontological ideal from which all existent objects are modeled towards, the “footprint” of all actualization, the forms of life into species to serve as the model of which artists can generate potentially endless number of copies, it becomes full-circle when we know this is the kind of content Bruce Nauman built on for his series of casts and ‘Anti-Form’, a set of strategies to shatter the constructed object and disperse its fragments. Nauman’s creations goes towards the path of implosion (bursting inward) or congealing (take shape or fixed) via the utilization of space and consuming it to manifest its own. Earth had the dinosaurs as its main inhabitants before a horrific event took their placement away and we are the main species that continues to exist to this very day. Just as we have such limited understanding of space and how its utilized to the best of our abilities, a person or object from an abundance of decades would be very difficult to understand and make context on without the proper tools or knowledge to bring to life until Robert Smithson’s idea of casting towards theorizing Entropy - the tendency of all matter and energy in the universe and the measure of the apparent disorder of a system - changed it all. It is thanks to uncovering the evidence of remains from a very far-gone era that many are able to manifest near-identical copies and make them out of durable material.
Question: Can evidence of the past be used in art? Is it considered art when depicting life and death? Are we crossing over the line between life and death?

Linear Metal / Blue Yarn / Metal Plate / Wooden Cabinet Door
I wanted to take a little break from utilizing wood as my main material for my sculptures. While there are some seeable outward of the creation, they’re allotments from wooden furniture and a small percentage in comparison to the whole body. How I came upon the final product is simple, but it comes full circle from my beginning of my return to Sculpture. When I returned to FIU to take Intermediate Sculpture for Spring 2022, my first ever project was 1000 Elements, where I was to craft a sculpture out of numerous copies of the same material. The final project from that time was a star made out of leaves. I wanted to replicate the shape but more three-dimensional. It might be hard to see, but there is another metal sculpture concealed within the star. It’s a creation my father helped me create in his workshop. I remember that it’s an enigmatic representation of the human body. The top is the head of a human being, but the tenement is zigzagged and exaggerated in appearance. I thought how the small sculpture is sheltered within the star is a representation to birth. More specifically, astral birth and human birth. Both humans and stars can die. We expire from age or illness and stars lose their lifeline via loss of hydrogen gas fuel. Just as stars can shine so bright in the night sky, we can shine too. We have the potential to make our desires and wishes come true with effort and determination. Commitment is a big necessity to breeze through life while doing something you love. I intended to have my piece hanged from above, but unfortunately, I found that all the metal combined made the body too heavy. I wanted it to literally float high in the air as a symbolism for my desire to take my art to higher levels.
