One small thing that really kills me is the mini, reoccurring, puppy metaphor between Theo and Audrey. I mean Theo tells us right from the beginning that “puppy” was his “baby name”, something his mother used to fondly call him now and again. She uses it during several of the flashbacks we see of her, and Theo even compares himself to a puppy when describing how, as a child, he would sit in front of the door waiting for her whenever she was late from work. This all comes full circle in the end when he’s trying to write his suicide note to Hobie and uses that story of his mother trying to nurse a stray puppy they found on the street back to health (only for it to die anyway). This is the final puppy comparison and it’s essentially Theo’s way of telling Hobie that, like the dog, he too is irreparably damaged and unable to be saved.
