at a recent beard house dinner, momofuku beverage director jordan salcito did the unthinkable: she served some very good boxed wine. "the pairing, a 2012 fuoristrada grillo, wasn’t poured from a bottle, but from a slim, rectangular carton that was not unlike a cafeteria juice box." the recyclable tetra pak containers create 60 percent less solid waste than a 750 ml bottle and cost less due to savings on transport and packaging costs.
fuoristrada wines are available in NYC and throughout the U.S. for more information, check out their website.
big thanks to maggie borden + the james beard foundation for the image and the article.
More of this, please. The more we demystify wine, the less afraid people will be to expand their palates and drink really tasty stuff.
Today is Domaine Vaccelli's 2012 rose - a Corsican wine that reminds me why I love really strange Italian wines. It's so pale it's almost orange, with a bright citrus zest palate that complements a more floral nose. The mouthfeel is almost like licking concrete... but in a good way. Yum.
Tonight's wine is an old favorite, and a bit of an oddity: Beaumes-de-Venise rouge from Chateau Redortier. The '07 is probably just about peaking now. Awesome ripe cherries and juniper on the nose, with brambly cranberry fruit on the palate.
Well, I technically moved to Atlanta today
