Ended up listening to Waiting on a Miracle from Encanto and noticed something cool:

Mirabelle’s list of miracles she can’t perform ends up actually outlining the miracle she’s about to perform. It even follows a pattern of something she does do, and two things she doesn’t to fix things

“I can't move the mountains” - makes the mountains crack

“I can't make flowers bloom” - teaches Isabelle to grow things other than flowers

“I can't take another night up in my room, waiting on a miracle” - she spends the night up figuring out what’s happening

“I can't heal what's broken” - fixes her broken family

“Can't control the morning rain or a hurricane” - gets Pepa to relationship with Bruno and lose control over her weather because of it

“Can't keep down the unspoken invisible pain, always waiting on a miracle, a miracle” - she reveals the family’s hidden suffering

Wait wait. I just saw the clip of Iroh going over the elements and

I have always thought of this with Katara who literally set out to punch outdated traditions in the face and was of course a water bender. I forgot about Sokka!

He went full inventor! He overcame is bigoted beliefs! Oh I love this! The elements aren’t just about the bending and how they use them, it’s also how the nonbenders internalize the culture!

I low key want to go over the nonbender characters now and see how much they tie to their nation’s elements.

Also “they have a deep sense of community and love that holds them through anything” when Sokka and Katara are the one set of siblings that work together and their family is the only one shown that is consistently there for each other. Oh that’s so sweet. They fight like mad sometimes, but they’ve got each other’s backs. Episode 1 Katara says she’s going on an insane mission to save the Avatar and Sokka’s there with a canoe to chase a warship with. Katara definitely has a more central role but Sokka is there to tie the team together as a strategist and support Katara as her brother and it’s so sweet.

this may be my age showing but I am a passionate supporter of wires. earbuds? put a leash on those things. wireless keyboard? no, it needs to hold hands with the computer. the ps5 controller I forgot to charge has the staying power of a wealthy nonagenarian with a much younger wife and 14 life insurance policies, but the controller plugged into my pc? that baby will outlive my bloodline. my ethernet cable is like a son to me.

the kids aren’t cooked, you just need to hang out with them in the woods.

I mean you meet these young people trapped in their classrooms or nuclear families in paved over neighborhoods, you are going to see them at the lowest points of forced routine, atomization, gutted autonomy, academic stress, you are going to see them at their worst. you’re going to see addictive behavior. bad social skills. lashing out. uncreativity. laziness and distraction. they do look totally cooked.

you need to take them into the woods

I do outdoor education work, and within minutes of any elementary to middle schooler getting free permission to mess around with their friends in a clearing, they’re curious and driven again. they’re asking each other questions and yeeting pinecones at trees (science) and using their bodies. sometimes for evil. as is developmentally right. they want to know the names of birds! they want to teach someone pokemon! they want to build stuff and kick stuff and tackle each other and you into the snow!

they’re basically fucking institutionalized for 90% of their lives but their spirits are alive. you need to take them into the woods you need to treat them like animals with powerful inner lives and they’ll show you they are.

and you, if you feel like you’re relating too much, remember that you can also take YOURSELF to the woods

Or like outside in general tbh, it is so easy to just sit in front of a computer all day and as someone who does that I am being painfully introduced to the mental health impact of that at the minute.

It’s so cliche, but really, go outside, you will feel better.
