as a sam raimi trilogy enjoyer and a mary jane watson apologist i felt all warm and fuzzy when tobey’s peter said his relationship with his mj was complicated but that they ultimately made it work, specially because their story ended in a bittersweet way with spiderman 3.
okay but the way that andrew garfield caught mj not with his webs (like gwen) but with this whole body wrapped around her to guarantee that she’d be safe????

people hate MJ from the Raimi trilogy because she actually has character depth and agency and a mind of her own and isn’t a trophy. it’s MJ who decides to be with Peter. Peter learns responsibility by the end of the first film, which is why he rejects her. the second film is about choice, and Peter chooses to let her be with someone else so that he can be the hero he wants and needs to be, because he is responsible and knows he has a duty to be spiderman. MJ makes a choice to be with Peter after knowing his secret, which is why the final shot of the second film lingers on her as she stares out the window with a look of longing and also possible regret or foreboding. the third film is about ego and forgiveness. all three main characters (Peter, Harry, and MJ) have a big ego in this film in differing ways. all three do things they shouldn’t do while entertaining that ego, and all three also forgive and are forgiven by the end of it.
