It could just a matter of time like age verification on Discord. It also seems the chatter is that You Tube is picking up copyright claims perhaps because AI can flag better or for worse. I don't want to go down this road. Not because fear of loss is an effective motivator. It is. I don't want to go there because given the choice, I want to believe it is better to run to something I am looking forward to than away from something I am afraid of. That energy running to energy could make the difference and create escape velocity from what may be closing in on this Hellmouth. These weird characters you are reading is attempt to convey first and foremost my passion for this project and secondly something that resonates with you that inspires you to be a part of it. so one of the largest open source data communities on the internet, data.world, got bought out by a company called ServiceNow, who has decided to fucking delete all of it by July 11th. they've given users barely any notice, no emails, just a fucking banner at the top and a blog post from June that gives barely a month to download your data before they fucking delete it all.

a bunch of archives of incredibly important government datasets like maternal mortality statistics are about to be deleted forever. in a regime where they're known to fudge numbers, we can't trust a lot of the data coming from them to not be altered. open source backups like those found on data.world are vital to being able to verify that the data coming from our government is still intact and not altered. and they're about to delete all of it.

i don't know if we need to start a petition or what. nobody seems to fucking care. there are millions of users on data.world and yet nobody is raising the alarm bells and it makes me feel like I'm going insane. somebody needs to do something. i don't know what to do. it feels like more and more of this world is being destroyed and dismantled. it's not only US centric data, either! it's all sorts of countries from around the world! and they're about to fucking delete everything.

the only things that won't be deleted are private companies who happen to use the paid version of their platform (which isn't accessible data to the open source community; some people have just been using their service to host their own data on privately)

and the kicker? this announcement was made... via an AI generated blog post. so not even any sort of human touch. just a generic, soulless announcement made by a soulless human about to take a wrecking ball to one of the more important websites that exists on the internet.

LJ Archivr Review with some important info

This review is from yesterday. This rings true as someone else contacted me about not being to archive their journal with the LJ Archivr. I was initially concerned there was an issue with the app. I did a zoom screen share and directly witnessed them drawing a blank screen just trying to bring home screen up on their browser without even using my app. You can get the LJ Archivr at https://www.ljarchivr.com It will archive local html files on your local hard drive with a spreadsheet inventory of all your entries & what was downloaded. I offered this service for free for 6 months since January 1st 2026, but it has consumed so much of my time it is not fun anymore. It now takes 3 times the effort to back-up a Livejournal. Especially, if it's a large journal it takes forever. Sometimes some people will ask for 2 or more journals. I did them with very little trouble before now. This is the consequence of waiting till the last minute. Prior to this it was much easier to archive. However, at the last minute when demand outplaces supply everybody wants toilet paper. The archiver's chicken little chirping "the sky is falling" takes new relevance when the shit hits the fan and you need that TP. I started this project in 2022 at the start of the invasion. It's 2026. Yes, I'm ranting a little bit. This will most likely mostly 2 types of people:

Those who haven't archived yet & feel called out.

Anti-archivists.

Please know that if you know anyone who has purchased this already they can archive your journal just as well as I can. They may not even ask for money. I no longer enjoy doing this work but If I have to then I will raise money for the projects I am really interested in and those who are not interested in spending money will reduce the requests this 4th of July Weekend. If you want to assist me with archiving fanvids. I will do it for free. I have asked this question before. Who preserving Vidding Fanworks and no one seems to have an answer or not care. If you don't have an answer but do care you can join me. This the kind of (fandom) history you can be on the right side of or wrong side of or wait till the last minute. That is truly The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly.

Update: It is specifically a Comcast > Livejournal issue. If you have Comcast you will have issues connecting to Livejournal if you are even able to connect at all.

(Neutral observation, genuinely curious) It sounds like your project (you = OP) is not associated with the OTW/AO3. Can you tell us more about that - what do you see as the possible advantages and risks of keeping your project separate from OTW's existing infrastructure, organizational systems, and funding model?

Who owns the viderecs.com domain name right now, and are you (OP) associated with them?

Is vidrecs.com an archive? If I join as a user, does the site automatically save a backup of the vids recced on the site? How do vidders feel about this? Do they currently have any say over what happens to their artworks?

You seem to be trying to recruit volunteer fan labor. Who/what will own the output of this labor? Will volunteers have any say? What funding and governance models will shape the labor and its output?

To be clear, "that hasn't been decided yet / we're taking feedback on it" is a good answer, if it's the truth.

Fandom has encountered a lot of people a) wasting our time by blundering about with lovely but half-baked ideas, or b) trying to pocket the value of fandom without sharing that value with those who created it.

Is vidrecs.com an archive? No, VidRecs.com is not an archive. It is a rec site. We do not host vids. How do vidders feel about this? About getting their vids recced? I don't know how vidders feel about that. I imagine some like it and some may be embarrassed by it. Each Vidder is different. I don't speak for them. Do they currently have any say over what happens to their artworks? Do you mean having them shared/recced? That depends on the platform they use to host their vids. We DO NOT host vids. We just give people a vidder-friendly place rec the vids they love.

I think I may have mentioned this being a labor of love, but I would hardly classify reccing vids as fan labor. We make a backup of vids just in case vids get deleted from the original host. If the vidder doesn't have a backup of their vid & they request one, we take that on a case-by-case basis. Hopefully, they see the value of vid preservation. We want to take the labor out of reccing. Each person who recs has a unique perspective and will rec vids that sometime no one has even thought of and we all benefit from that. What funding and governance models will shape the labor and its output? I didn't mention money. Honestly, I don't know what governance means. Sounds serious.

See 3. My question: If anyone knows of any existing fandom projects that focus on Vidding Preservation I would love to hear about it. Please let me know. I hate seeing vids deleted off You Tube or being region blocked. It seems to be happening more. If there is such a project I might just join them instead.

Your comments were closed and I couldn't dm you and I was confused about how to respond. Also, I have been in fandom since 2008 so I know what you mean about wasting time. There are so many vids I've had good intentions on completing and sometimes I never complete them, but I always learn something from the effort to try and get them done. No one should feel obligated to join this project unless it speaks to you. I don't want to waste anyone's time. Sorry, if I have already.
