Frank Najar sentenced to 1 year & $200 fine for “Liquor to an Indian” 1918
At this time, there was a prohibition in place specifically for Native Americans. While the law was amended several times, the main tenants were that bars couldn’t serve Native Americans liquor, liquor couldn’t be sold on reservations, and a loophole that allowed beer to be served to them. A loophole quickly discovered and used.

I learned about 3.2 beer today and how excited people were when it became available in Elmira in April 1933.
“Should Be Investigated,” Daily British Whig. July 17, 1917. Page 02. —- Soldier Fined in Police Court Believed to be of Unsound Mind. —- That a soldier who was fined $200 and costs or three months last Saturday for bringing liquor into Canada from the States is of unsound mind in the opinion of J. E. Jones of Lake Ontario Park. The man in question, Gus Torrie, appeared in the Police Court on Saturday. His companion was fined $10 and costs but Torrie admitted having brought some liquor from across the line with him.
Mr. Jones noticed the soldier in question at the park and says that he believes that his mind has become unbalanced. His manner and attitude was that of a person of unsound mind, and in view of this Mr. Jones thinks that he should be examined. He talked very much to himself and it is just probably that he should be in an asylum instead of a jail.
