one thing iâm annoyed about is that emerald fennelâs wuthering heights changes a lot of plot details and is rightfully called out as being a poor adaptation while guillermo del toroâs frankenstein changes as much, possibly more and is touted as an accurate adaptation to the original work. why???
I think the keeping to the underlying message of the novel affects peopleâs acceptance of the changes. Itâs about adding to the story not taking from it.
If in a novel themed around racism you then cast a poc as the aggressor, and a white man the victim of said manâs cruelty you have clearly removed a key theme from the film; and thatâs just one key theme that has been changed. Fennelâs Wuthering Heights removes complexity in favour of romance hence the criticism.
Del Toroâs Frankenstein contains the themes laid out via the novel to the point that if his scenes were added to the novel no key messaging or themes would change. He had added to the story highlighting his own additional themes, however they have not taken away from the core themes of the novel, and thus have not affected the accuracy of the story told.
