Zephyr leaned against the railing of the Bridge of Progress, putting barely any weight on their broken leg. Imagine if that guy Viktor said he was going to send to get me didn't come. That would be something. Their eyes flitted toward the far end of the bridge, where the muted gray concrete gave way to the clean gold streets of Piltover. Zephyr shook their head. He probably wouldn't do that. Viktor seems nice enough. Zephyr sighed, slowly easing themself onto the ground. There's no way I'm waiting standing up, though, they thought with a strained smirk on their lips.
Viktor's cane clacked against the ground as he walked, his pace was slow yet firm.
"Excuse me, are you Z?" he questioned, still standing on the Piltover side of the bridge.
"I couldn't get an errand boy at this time." he explained, absentmindedly clenching and unclenching his free hand at his side.
Zephyr's head snapped up, and they looked over at Viktor. "Oh, uh, yeah, that's me. If you want, you can call me Zephyr. Or Z. Either work." They placed their hands on the pavement below them and pushed themself up into a standing position, swaying slightly before regaining their balance. "And you must be Viktor. Nice accent," they said with a teasing grin. Zephyr attempted to get their broken leg out of Viktor's line of sight. Even though they were wearing long pants, it was easy to see that their left leg was bent at an angle that was.. not okay. Despite knowing that Viktor was aware of their injury, they still felt weird about having him see the extent first hand.
"Z is shorter." he reasons, sounding a bit bored.
Viktor looked down at Zephyr's legs, narrowing his eyes when he saw the clearly broken one.
"That looks bad." He murmurs, "I can get a cart, you should not be walking on that."
He continues to avoid eye contact and instead waves Z to follow him to the main street on the Piltover half. He whistled for a cart, the only one that stopped was a wheat merchant.
Viktor thanked the merchant and climbed up to the back first, he held out a hand for Zephyr to get in next.
Zephyr took Viktor's hand and lifted themself into the cart, wincing a little but attempting to school their expression into one of nonchalance.
"So, uh.." Z tapped their fingers into a rythmic pattern on their knee, trying to think of some topic to speak with Viktor about. "Were you doing anything interesting before I upended your day?"
Viktor signaled for the wheat merchant to go, the cart starting up and trudging along the road. It was a relatively non-busy summer afternoon, and the sun was thankfully beginning to dip down further into the sky.
"No." he responded, his eyes trained on the road, "I was working on some equations, I needed a break anyways." he shrugged a little, raising his hand to block the sun as he looked ahead.
His pale skin made him appear unusually translucent in the sun, like a sickly child - in hindsight that simile was almost correct.
"My partner has traveled to stay with his mother for the day so I figured I would leave the lab, get some fresh air." he muttered, lightly kicking at a loose board with his un-braced leg.
Zephyr nodded in acknowledgement before looking over their shoulder, light green eyes tracing over every Piltovan the cart passed.
After a few seconds - maybe even a minute - of silence, Zephyr spoke again. "Piltover's weird," they mumbled, crossing their arms over their chest. "Everyone up Topside has so much, yet they still just.. have no compassion for anyone from Zaun. I came up here, once, just to try and steal some food. I had gone weeks with nothing but half-rotted crap I found in dumpsters. I figured, surely nobody Topside would mind if I just swiped some food. Not like anyone's goin' hungry here, right?"
Zephyr let out a small, humorless laugh. "I was wrong. Got caught by some Enforcer, and they thought I had caused just enough trouble to be kicked and punched around a few times." Their brows furrowed. "I don't exactly remember what happened after. My memory's always been shit, but smacking my head against Piltover's fancy golden streets probably didn't help, either."
"The doctors can check you for concussions as well." he took a deep breath, frustrated by the slow pace of traffic.
This man was.. odd. to say the least. He wore a relatively simple outfit for a piltie but it was definitely not for the current summer weather. it was about 85 degrees during the afternoons and yet he pressed on with the strange outfit.
He grumbled at passing carts, giving most of the drivers on the busy street horrible glares. His non-braced leg bounced impatiently as he leaned slightly off the side of the cart, at the slow pace it was hardly dangerous, but the man looked as if he would disintegrate if a slight breeze came his way.
"The hospital has free meals, and I can put you under a pseudonym if you would prefer anonymity." he muttered, though his attention was trained on the passing carts, still frustrated and impatiently leaning where he sat on a large bundle of wheat.
"That would be nice," Zephyr said quietly.

He begins to fill the paper out, it's clear he's a scientist from his neat yet unintelligible writing. He's done quite fast, everything he does appears to be impatient.

Maybe Z was just too used to being surrounded by filth. "How long is this gonna take?" Zephyr asked, cracking their knuckles on their left hand absentmindedly.
He shrugged a little, looking to the door with a small scowl on his face.
"They always take forever." he mutters, cursing a bit under his breath.
Viktor's grip on the cane tightened as he watched the seconds tick by on the clock, his non-braced leg bounced to the beat of the repetitive sound.
"Well that's wonderful," Zephyr said sarcastically. After five minutes of doing nothing but listening to the ticking of a clock in the room, Z sighed and flopped down onto the bed, laying their arm over their eyes. Florescent lights were not good on the eyes.

"Soooo.. do you have any pets?"

"No, I do not." he murmurs, before pausing for a moment. "Do you?" he finally asks.
Zephyr sat up slightly. "No. I mean, I used to. This little frog, I named him Marrow. I found him in this lake I used to sleep by back when he was a.. baby-frog, I guess. I don't know what they're called."
"He only had three legs, so that's how I distinguished him from the other frogs. He died a while back, though," they finished, frowning slightly.
"One time, I tried to catch a bird to make it my friend. Don't think it enjoyed that, though," Z chuckled nervously, rubbing the back of their neck.
"Oh?" he raised a brow, mildly intrigued, "What happened?"
He adjusted his sitting arrangements briefly, moving to uncross his legs and scooch back - sitting up straighter before putting the telescoped cane back in his lap.
"It, uh, kinda scratched up my arms. And my face. It tried flying away but I kept trying to hold onto it because I was, like, twelve and an idiot, but it kept wiggling and by the time it finally escaped from me, I was covered with pigeon-talon-marks." Do you call pigeon claws talons? Eh, not important.
"Y'know, retelling the story, I feel like I should've known better at twelve years old," Zephyr mused.
"I- Well I suppose we all learn different things at different times in our lives." Viktor looked slightly uncomfortable, scratching at the paint of his cane yet again.
"I have had many experiments fail on me; it is a part of the scientific method. You must focus on continuing with your mistakes, learning from them as you go." his left loafer traced along the lines of the tile floor.

The two were escorted to a waiting room where Z was handed a few sheets to fill out. Viktor sat down in one of the plush chairs, there were many lining the room despite the fact that it was only the two of them in there.

They placed their hands on the pavement below them and pushed themself up into a standing position, swaying slightly before regaining their balance. "And you must be Viktor. Nice accent," they said with a teasing grin. Zephyr attempted to get their broken leg out of Viktor's line of sight. Even though they were wearing long pants, it was easy to see that their left leg was bent at an angle that was.. not okay. Despite knowing that Viktor was aware of their injury, they still felt weird about having him see the extent first hand.
"Z is shorter." he reasons, sounding a bit bored.

"That looks bad." He murmurs, "I can get a cart, you should not be walking on that."

"So, uh.." Z tapped their fingers into a rythmic pattern on their knee, trying to think of some topic to speak with Viktor about. "Were you doing anything interesting before I upended your day?"
Viktor signaled for the wheat merchant to go, the cart starting up and trudging along the road. It was a relatively non-busy summer afternoon, and the sun was thankfully beginning to dip down further into the sky.
"No." he responded, his eyes trained on the road, "I was working on some equations, I needed a break anyways." he shrugged a little, raising his hand to block the sun as he looked ahead.
His pale skin made him appear unusually translucent in the sun, like a sickly child - in hindsight that simile was almost correct.
"My partner has traveled to stay with his mother for the day so I figured I would leave the lab, get some fresh air." he muttered, lightly kicking at a loose board with his un-braced leg.
Zephyr nodded in acknowledgement before looking over their shoulder, light green eyes tracing over every Piltovan the cart passed.

"Everyone up Topside has so much, yet they still just.. have no compassion for anyone from Zaun. I came up here, once, just to try and steal some food. I had gone weeks with nothing but half-rotted crap I found in dumpsters. I figured, surely nobody Topside would mind if I just swiped some food. Not like anyone's goin' hungry here, right?"

For the rest of the cart ride, the two stayed in relative silence. Zephyr spent the ride to the clinic picking at their nails in an attempt to clean the grime off of their fingernails and wondering if Viktor was always this impatient about traffic.
About ten minutes later, Zephyr spotted a building that seemed to be the clinic. Well, they assumed it was the clinic; the structure didn't look like the Piltover penthouses that they had passed on the ride there, and there was also a long word that Z could definitely read, but chose not to above the double doors.
Viktor told the merchant to stop the cart, and he exited first, holding his hand out yet again for Zephyr to grab. once they did, he grabbed his cane and walked besides them and into the main lobby.

After Viktor took them, Zephyr ran a hand through their short hair. "Also, it's not the.. head thing. I just can't read certain words, y'know? Like that one," they pointed to one of the words on the first sheet of paper - one that Viktor understood as biological.
"that's alright, I'm sure you've had other things to do besides reading about biology." he says, no judgement in his words.
He begins to fill the paper out, it's clear he's a scientist from his neat yet unintelligible writing. He's done quite fast, everything he does appears to be impatient.
After a while one of the nurses enters the room, waving Z to follow. Viktor loops one arm around Zephyr's back, helping them walk. The stride was unconventional, to say the least; Viktor's cane was the thing keeping both of them from toppling over.
The nurses must have somehow sensed Zephyr's status as a Zaunite, though Z didn't attempt to hide it - their clothes clearly supported the theory.
After a few minutes of hobbling behind the nurse, they entered a sterile clinic room. the nurse instructed the patient to climb up on the bed before leaving. Viktor scowled at the door when she left before helping Z up.
Once everything was settled and they waited for a doctor, Viktor sat in the crappy chair in the corner of the room. He scratched at the red paint of the handle, shortening it so it would rest in his lap.

They placed their hands on the pavement below them and pushed themself up into a standing position, swaying slightly before regaining their balance. "And you must be Viktor. Nice accent," they said with a teasing grin. Zephyr attempted to get their broken leg out of Viktor's line of sight. Even though they were wearing long pants, it was easy to see that their left leg was bent at an angle that was.. not okay. Despite knowing that Viktor was aware of their injury, they still felt weird about having him see the extent first hand.

Viktor signaled for the wheat merchant to go, the cart starting up and trudging along the road. It was a relatively non-busy summer afternoon, and the sun was thankfully beginning to dip down further into the sky.
"No." he responded, his eyes trained on the road, "I was working on some equations, I needed a break anyways." he shrugged a little, raising his hand to block the sun as he looked ahead.
His pale skin made him appear unusually translucent in the sun, like a sickly child - in hindsight that simile was almost correct.
"My partner has traveled to stay with his mother for the day so I figured I would leave the lab, get some fresh air." he muttered, lightly kicking at a loose board with his un-braced leg.

"Everyone up Topside has so much, yet they still just.. have no compassion for anyone from Zaun. I came up here, once, just to try and steal some food. I had gone weeks with nothing but half-rotted crap I found in dumpsters. I figured, surely nobody Topside would mind if I just swiped some food. Not like anyone's goin' hungry here, right?"

"That looks bad." He murmurs, "I can get a cart, you should not be walking on that."
He continues to avoid eye contact and instead waves Z to follow him to the main street on the Piltover half. He whistled for a cart, the only one that stopped was a wheat merchant.
Viktor thanked the merchant and climbed up to the back first, he held out a hand for Zephyr to get in next.

Zephyr leaned against the railing of the Bridge of Progress, putting barely any weight on their broken leg. Imagine if that guy Viktor said he was going to send to get me didn't come. That would be something. Their eyes flitted toward the far end of the bridge, where the muted gray concrete gave way to the clean gold streets of Piltover. Zephyr shook their head. He probably wouldn't do that. Viktor seems nice enough. Zephyr sighed, slowly easing themself onto the ground. There's no way I'm waiting standing up, though, they thought with a strained smirk on their lips.
Viktor's cane clacked against the ground as he walked, his pace was slow yet firm.
"Excuse me, are you Z?" he questioned, still standing on the Piltover side of the bridge.
"I couldn't get an errand boy at this time." he explained, absentmindedly clenching and unclenching his free hand at his side.

"Of course, no problem." he folds his arms.
thank you, this really means a lot to me unfortunately I don't know if I can make it all the way up Topside by myself. y'know, cause of the whole.. leg situation. maybe we could try and meet halfway? I might be able to get to the bridge, but I don't know if I could make it further than that, it really hurts like a bitch at the moment
