being a relatively new tf fan and haven't really read a lot of the IDW1 continuity there's something im curious about,,,

so I ask: what do you consider a good, faithful pharma representation?

I really want to hear what you guys have to say, specially from actual pharma fans!

#i forgot about tumblrs 30 tag limit fml #but ego isnt the driving force. the driving force is his sense of self preservation wanting control #which doesnt excuse what he did. but thats is why i dont think he has an inflated ego #i had a whooole elegant thing written about how he feels guilty bc he got stopped at the guilty gate but noooo tumblr doesnt tell me im #past the tag limit. but yea pharma canonically felt guilty and egged aid on to kill him bc he didnt want to confront what he did #the guilty -> doesnt want to confront -> incites first aid to shoot him correlation is up to interpretation but imo thats what happened #would he have repented if he was of sound mind? we dont know. we wont ever know #ok into speculative pharma territory #supposing that the 3/3 instances of pharma being nice/cordial/competent/empathetic pre delphi werent flukes #and supposing that he doesnt really have an inflated ego outside of gripping like a vice to maintain his sanity #then we're left with a prodigal doctor who cares about his patients and made a name for himself in a time of adversity #i dont think he was nice. i think he's obsessed about his job to the point where he can be friends with ratchet 'works as a hobby' vaporex #i think he has questionable taste in men and cant read the room #but once upon a time you could find him at a bar and strike up a pleasant--if rote--conversation

#oh this is a very complex question that idk if i can even address satisfactorily #keep in mind that pharma interpretations (even among pharma fans) will vary wildly just bc of how little we see of him #and the sheer range he displayed while he was there #jro himself flip flopped a bit on his motivations. which isn't that important if you don't care about word of god BUT it's a good ref #i... actually think that pharma is quite nice! or at least he has the capacity to be polite #i double checked the comic just make sure but... i don't actually think he has an inflated ego?#or rather i do think he has an ego but all of his egotistical behavior comes from the exceptional stress hes under #this is a difficult argument to make given how little we see of pharma pre delphi #(one line in wreckers one line in Chromedomes flashback and one line in Bullets which is a short prose story by jro)#but! in all of these instances! pharma shows concern for his patients and his staff #he is in all three instances... nice #after some research into human surgery and the education (hell) human surgeons need to go through #and the caricature and intensity and vibe of the stereotypical human surgeon (research only no firsthand experience)#i think pharma is just... a regular surgeon #personality slash ego wise #hear me out. the narration in mtmte (esp early mtmte) is unreliable (whether through ratchet or first aid)#i think it makes it flavorful. but it also gives way for people to interpret the text as is (even when the subtext or actual text disagrees #if you ignore the narration pharma will sound that much more reasonable. i daresay any ego he showed on delphi was due to his #self preservation. his desperate attempt at a facade of control. which given the situation tarn set him up in is completely understandable #he as the surgeon is responsible for his staff and all their patients (first aid lost his license so theyre all on pharmas license)#(which obv isnt canon but its an argument i can make)#and all of them are relying on him to pull through. and also the neuroses of people who have been taught to safely cut people apart #it makes sense why hes so confrontational with ratchet. because ratchet being there makes him lose control #which isnt to say what he did wasnt wrong. it is. this is just my argument that his ego actually isnt that inflated (on delphi)#and i dont think his ego is inflated on luna ii either. i think if you whittle away all the pomp (and most of it is just pomp)#(hes such a drama queen)#then you see that a) pharma is NOT mentally sound. at all.#and b) the focal point of him doing that to ratchet and ambulon is retaliation #retaliation he couldnt perform against tarn. because he was powerless #and now hes no longer powerless. hes in control. yes there is ego in him
