Trayvon Martin Marches Continue Throughout the Nation
Thousands of people throughout the US are protesting the George Zimmerman Not Guilty verdict in the recent Florida trial. The country is outraged not only that a murderer was allowed to walk free, but also about the many racial tensions surrounding this particular case.
In this photo, about the dozen black protesters surround a burning American flag. Burning of the flag is common practice at protests. Anarchists do it, occupy protesters have done it, and now anti-racism protesters have joined the force. In this scenario, the burning is actually quite symbolic. The country has, in a way, failed these people. A young black man cannot walk around on the streets of his own community without fearing violence from self-proclaimed law enforcement officers (or even real law enforcement officers). People of color have to fear for their lives and the lives of their children, friends, and other loved ones while the legal system backs up the murderers. -Americans are letting our government know that we won’t tolerate these atrocities anymore. -We are showing them that we don’t want to be part of their racially divided country. -We are showing them that we know the racism is there, no matter how much they turn a blind eye. -We are showing them No Justice, No Peace
