One Day At A Time Review
Season 1 Episode 3: No Mass
The one where:
Penelope and Lydia clash over going to church.
Commentary:
This isn’t my favourite. The episode starts with a bang showing us Lydia’s delightful morning routine but what follows is 30 minutes of arguing about church which as a non-believer just isn’t my thing. Carmen’s arrival does give Penelope some killer lines and the eventual resolution of the church plot is solid but this episode just doesn’t grab me as much as some others.
First appearance of:
Carmen
Is there dancing?
Hell yes. The episode starts with Lydia’s morning routine which involves a fair bit of dancing. Penelope does the same the next day. The episode ends with Lydia taking up her morning routine again complete with dancing.
Curtain watch:
Lydia appears from behind the curtain to start her morning routine. The next day Penelope opens the curtains to find Lydia gone. The episode ends with Lydia appearing from behind the curtain as she takes up her morning routine again.
Gay watch:
Nothing this time.
When things get real:
When Lydia reveals the reason behind her insistence they go to church. It having been her only solace when Penelope was deployed in Afghanistan.
Best line:
Lydia: Yo entiendo.
Schneider: I also play Nintendo.
