i notice when many artists are (understandably) raf mains but also i can really tell when raf is their main. and i (as not a raf main) must remind myself repeatedly that i am perfectly capably of drawing for myself and that i must create the illustration i wish to see

so anyway i'm going to take it out on raf. please look forward to my next drawing where i stick the one and only sea god into hot pot. and my companion piece where turn him into sashimi (lovingly)

i'm convinced that this fandom's never-ending back-and-forth about dark themes in lads is due to the fact that the writers are very obviously courting different reader archetypes via different aspects of the game

let me explain ☝️

main story? written for players who enjoy grittier & more intense scenarios (as well as those who seek to be disturbed by the fiction they engage with)

limited cards? written for players who enjoy the romance of it all (as well as those who seek to be comforted by the fiction they engage with)

myths? written for players who enjoy tragedy & angst (as well as lore-heads and those who like to identify/analyze recurring themes)

in each context, the writers tackle dark themes differently. main story? the dark themes are prominent plot devices and cause emotional fallout. limited cards? the dark themes are "seasoning" for the romance and are often glossed over. myths? the dark themes are included in service of the romantic tragedy and the lore.

and the reason ppl in this fandom are always at each other's throats about how dark themes are addressed (and whether they're even present!) is because different players extend their preferences across all types of stories rather than just the type that's most tailored to their tastes. by that i mean: main story enthusiasts tend to read limited cards and myths through a darker lens; limited card enthusiasts tend to de-emphasize the darker themes and focus on how the main couple overcomes something horrific together; myth enthusiasts tend to home in on angsty moments and lore hints/callbacks.

anyway, this is why it's important to buddy up with ppl who enjoy the same aspects of the game as you because fandom is where we go to dial our preferences up to 11
