Can someone please explain how Sherlock 'pretending' to have a drug problem in HLV would help the case he was working on? And even if he was looking for it to be publicized, hanging out in disguise in an anonymous drug den in the suburbs doesn't seem to be the way to go about it...

Sherlock reverting to his drug use as a means to cope with John becoming engaged and married to Mary happens in the original ACD Holmes canon.

But your question about the drug use in ‘His Last Vow’ brings up a relevant point.
There is already evidence that Sherlock was avoiding Janine and her advances by staying out overnight at the drug den.
As to his claim that he was doing so to get Magnussen’s attention, you are right to voice your suspicions given the covert nature of his drug taking. Perhaps then Sherlock’s claim that he was taking drugs for a case might be nothing but an excuse to John and the others to hide the fact he was genuinely back to using again. If his sole reason for doing drugs was because he wanted Magnussen to notice it, he really could have been way more obvious about it, instead of complaining about John ratting him out. Wouldn’t that be an ideal thing to happen if you wanted to get noticed?
The interesting thing as well that when John found a drugged Isaac in the Drug Den, he was completely and utterly focused on him and his well-being. John has got his back to Sherlock.
The fact Sherlock is claiming to be undercover, means that if he hadn’t spoken up, John would not have seen him. But then given Sherlock’s first words to John when he spoke up were:
"Hello John, have you come to find me too?”
Seems to reinforce that Sherlock is actually feeling lost.
So basically, we think he is taking the drugs for his own benefit because he is missing John but using the excuse he is doing it for the case.
