GZA - LIQUID SWORDS This record is what's up. GZA, aka The Genius of the notorious Wu Tang Clan, released this way back in the early 90's. Just got it on vinyl, because it's basically my favorite hip-hop record of all time. I can only imagine when this was released back in the day that it was extremely cutting edge. It still bangs hard. The first song alone leaves you struck with it's heavy beat and GZA's lyrical assault over it. The rest of the record will keep your attention and keep blowing your mind as it goes. If you dig hip-hop at all, make sure to jam this. I know Joey Bada$$ sampled one of the tracks on his Summer Knights mixtape. This record will forever be relevant to hip-hop culture.
CREATIVE ADULT - PSYCHIC MESS Was really stoked to get this the other day from my local record store. Creative Adult is a mix of new wave and fuzz punk, if such a genre exists. Their music is layered with phaser and fuzzy guitar riffs and blasting drums. The vocals sounds super reverbed and distant while remaining in your face throughout the entire album. I give these guys tons of props for finding their own sound and making it their own. This is their first full length record out on Run For Cover Records. This LP is on red first pressing.
MODERN BASEBALL - You're Gonna Miss It All Modern Baseball is a relatively new and doing their own thing in this huge tidal wave of emo revivalist bands. You're Gonna Miss It All is their sophomore record on Run For Cover Records following up their freshman record Sports. Sophomore records are always the most interesting. It really shows where the band will head in their future. There's usually a couple directions bands always go. They either... Totally change their entire sound Basically take their first album and redo it (don't change or progress at all) Attempt to go progress and totally fail Or release a record that is truly a progression but not a major change. YGMIA is a progression from their first record, but in the best sense possible. You can see them continue doing what they do best but expanding their sound much further than just another emo band. This was a solid record. Go listen to it for emo jams with goofy vocals and nerdy lyrics.
WU TANG - ENTER THE WU TANG (36 Chambers) Now this is a classic. Wu-Tang is a hardcore hip-hop crew from NY that consists of members... RZA Ghostface Killah Method Man GZA Old Dirty Bastard Inspectah Deck Killah Priest & Raekwon. So now time for a little hip-hop history. The West coast had been ruling hip-hop for the most part. The East coast hip-hop scene was mainly underground until Wu-Tang came into the scene with their groundbreaking 36 Chambers debut record. This record starts hard and ends hard. Wu-Tang brought popular West coast hardcore gangster hip-hop to popularity in the east. They paved the way for many rappers such as Nas, Jay-Z, Biggie Smalls, and many many others. All the members of the Wu-Tang hit hard verse after verse consistently. As they say, they've mastered the 36 Chambers of rap. If you've never given Wu-Tang a listen DO IT. They're pioneers and kings of hip-hop.
Nirvana - In Utero (2013 Mix) My girlfriend bought me this as an early Valentine's Day gift. When I got it I almost cried because I love Nirvana, and In Utero is a classic (not to mention I could've never afforded this record by myself). In Utero, though not as popular or as well recognized as Nevermind, was still a crucial record by Nirvana. It showed the many sides and facets that Nirvana had as a band. They could release a pop-rock hit or a total grunge jam. Not to mention Kurt Cobain could write lyrics like no other lyricist could. This record was pressed from the original tapes In Utero was recorded on, then it was remixed and remastered this year for it's 20th anniversary. The two 180 gram vinyls were cut to 45 rpms. This record is a favorite of mine as a collector, not only because it was an amazing album for listening purposes, but because of the band itself and how sweet Nirvana still is over 2 decades later.
BASEMENT IS BACK BABY Okay so maybe this needs a little bit of explanation for some of you. Basement is a emo/pop-punk/rock band from the UK. They have reach a pretty high level of fame within the punk/hardcore/emo scene from touring with bands like Title Fight, Daylight, Dead End Path, and many others. Shortly after releasing their second record Colourmeinkindess, they announced they would taking a hiatus for personal reasons. Today, a little over a year later, they've announced they will be continuing as a band and touring this summer. Their first EP (not featured here) was relatively a pop-punk record with a lot of similarities to Title Fight, such as using harsh vocals and the overall feeling. But, their first record I Wish I Could Stay Here (green vinyl) showed they had progressed into a much different band. IWICSH is a lot less pop-punk, and a lot more emo with some pop-punk tendencies within. This record led them to further success and many tours. After some extensive touring they recorded and released Colourmeinkindess, which has become a 'new classic' in the scene. It took a much more 90's emo with possibly a slight soft-grunge position that would be reminiscent of Smashing Pumpkins and such bands. Shortly after this release is when they announced they would be on hiatus. Both these records rule. They have a lot of easily jammable songs and some serious bangers. It's hard to overlook raw talent like Basement has. I got both these records from my local record store Karma Records in Warsaw. I think they're both 3rd pressings. Make sure to give these tight dudes a listen and jump on the fan-wagon of kids like me anticipating a new release hopefully this year!
Circa Survive - On Letting Go Circa Survive is a post-rock/post-hardcore band, fronted by Anthony Green, ex vocalist of alt rock/post-hardcore powerhouse Saosin. On Letting Go is Circa's 2nd record, proceeding Juturna, which was a super solid record. Following up on Juturna would've been the challenge of a lifetime. Juturna was a breakthrough record, and is considered a classic in the genre. Luckily, OLG succeeded in living up to it's predecessor. On Letting Go is packed with sweet guitar licks and leads, subtle yet complex and entertaining drumming, and vocals that pull it all together. Every time I sit down and listen to this record I fall in love with it again. Circa Survive truly refined themselves as a group of great musicians rather than just a band with this record. It went to show that they can surpass what and improve on the work they've done. If you haven't listened to this fantastic record, go do it today. You will be blown away.
Sorry for all my vinyl posts lately being majorly emo records. With the revival in sesh i'm always jamming a "emo" band of some sort. Tonight I'm gonna switch it up. Promise <3
A Great Big Pile of Leaves by sconevibes on Flickr.
You know what else matters? Me and my skills.
A Great Big Pile Of Leaves- You're Always On My Mind This record came in the mail today (shoutout to Topshelf Records for always hooking a brother up) and I just had to throw it on. Too often I make the mistake of jamming one or maybe two songs from a band's new record then being disappointed when I dislike it. This record, on the contrary, was not at all like that. Quite the opposite to be totally honest. This band has kinda jumped on the bandwagon of the "EMO REVIVAL" of 2011/2012/2013/2014? Lucky enough this revival is not a bad thing by any means. A ton of solid bands have come out of this, some of my favorites being You Blew It!, Basement, Title Fight's newer jams, and Everyone Everywhere. Sometime I'll have to make a "best of the emo revival" list for ya'll. Back to this record though. While jumping on this revival bandwagon, AGBPOL has managed to define themselves as an individual phenomenon, if I can call them that. Their music has subtle notes of indie and possibly even tropical islandy vibes. They remain true to emo with their overall sound, not too twinkly, not too rough. Just smooth and well polished. I'm pretty impressed with where AGBPOL went on this record, and I'm excited to see if they diversify their sound more or keep close to what they done up until now. This blue vinyl is a second pressing from Topshelf records.
