Alright, so I wanna get this out there before I watch episode 6. Diana and Tommy in ep5. yes. yikes.
I said before I was really hoping they wouldn't fuck and that I'd be very annoyed if they did, mostly because I was picturing a kind of Jessie Eden situation happening. And then they did fuck in episode 5, and it just wasn't anything like that.
Diana fucked him and he just had to take it and do it, and it's never felt so wrong and awful, to see Tommy do something he doesn't want to do for his plans. The sickening feeling was so well captured with the acting and the music and Tommy's immediate kinda breakdown reaction afterwards; it's no coincidence it happens right after they have sex.
With Jessie it was so purely transactional from both sides. It's clear she's just doing it "for the cause" and not even gladly doing it, like Tatiana who partly has fun toying with Tommy at times, but not Jessie. it took her realizing that's what it would take partly if she wanted Tommy on her side. And meanwhile Tommy is there mostly to snitch on the communists, playing seducer to gain her trust and he thinks that he can do it via sleeping with her, that it'll add another layer of trust between them in her mind? So they're basically playing each other, and then Tommy just ditches her when he's elected and marries Lizzie, but their alliance does go on as if nothing happened. So them sleeping together feels completely pointless and that's why it annoys me. (unless you consider that maybe Tommy actually wants her a bit because she represents everything he 'used to believe in' and also kind of reminds him of Greta? anwyay that'd have to be its own analysis post).
But with Diana. With Diana the whole situation is absolutely sickening. To us, and to Tommy. Diana fucks him because she 'mostly does what she wants' and if she wants and can then she does. It's the same amount of power Mosley has and wielded so blatantly on s5 and that made him so terrifying, the forbidding is forbidden for us (that could never really truly apply to Tommy no matter how much money and power he gains), and the whole "this isn't about some little transaction between us, it's about the bigger picture and changing the world and facism and trust" shit.
What is the most terrifying thing about certain antagonists in peaky imo, like Campbell at times, or Father Hughes, and Mosley and now Diana, is how they toy around with Tommy. How they could get him into situations where they had the upper hand and Tommy had to do exactly as they said because there was no choice. Basically everything with Hughes, many little instances with Mosley, like when Mosley tells Tommy the Scottish gang dude had asked for Tommy's betting places and that Mosley had given them to him and Tommy goes to make it transactional, says "In exchange of what?" and it's in exchange of nothing. Because these are just minor things in face of their alliance and changing the world. And Tommy just has to sit there and allow it, and it's fucking painful to watch.
With Diana it's the same. There's no choice, no "Tommy wanted it" or "Tommy perused her" or even the ever reliable "Tommy is getting something out of it as a mean to his own ends". She brushes off his requests and says that this isn't about charitable houses, it's about changing the world, and a deeper kind of trust. That once again he needs to prove himself, that it's more difficult to lie with your body than with your words (and this echoes to when Mosley asked him to do the Hitler salute, to "prove it physically"). It's having sex with the representation of everything he despises and is repulsed by and is fighting against atm, and he can't even pass it off as completely transactional in his mind (though I'm sure he tries; it is, after all, all in the sake of bringing down facism).
The "Everyone's a whore, Grace. We just sell different parts of ourselves." has never felt more poignant and literal. There's been plenty of things Tommy's done to meet his own goals that he inherently didn't "want" to do, for sure, but this feels like a special kind of rock bottom (and the way he proceeds to immediately have a meltdown-ish in the boat afterwards...) .
Anyway, rant over. This was a very well done scene and I'm enjoying (and hating) Diana as a character a lot more than I expected. I can't wait to do a rewatch already.
I was NOT expecting this fucking disease thing Tommy has ohmyfuckingod. just finished ep4. quickly typing this as ep5 is starting. I was NOT expecting this. If Tommy dies by a disease I will be... like. hm. it's weird. would have expected death by his own hand or others, this was just... fate, luck. well, it can count as retribution for all the evils he's done and blah blah but yeah I don't know, I wasn't expecting it!
ep5 is starting and can't pause it cause I'm watching with family, so I'm just gonna say that I loved the whole first part of the episode, all of the slow character moments, the grieving and Lizzie and Tommy and Tommy and Arthur conversation, brilliant. Suffering + lots of references to them as kids, I'm loving that. ok ep5 is starting I'll vomit more thoughts here later BYE
edit: also FUCK. WHAT THE FUCK was that about Tommy having a secret random son?? with a woman he slept in 1914 before he went to war AKA right after Greta Jurossi's death?? I hate that. Perhaps I like to think too nicely of before-the-war Tommy but I would have thought he wouldn't have done that. sigh. Also it's just such a random thing and a trope I hate. I almost really hope Esme is lying about everything for gold.
I have no idea what's gonna happen after this ep3, but I feel like a jump time is coming. Though I lowkey wanna see how Tommy deals with everything after what happens and not just be told of it (I'm still expecting more details on the four years!! four years!! what exactly happened in those four years?!). Imagine Ada and Arthur getting their acts straight and stepping in to deal with everything while Tommy is in crisis, I really wanna see more of their siblings dynamic. Or perhaps Tommy will just push through relentlessly once again. We'll see.
Other thoughts so far; Mosley is being so pushed to the shadows with Diana and Jack Nelson in the picture, it's like he himself is intimidated by these too, and I'm so intrigued to see how that's gonna go. Also, I'm gonna be SO deeply annoyed if Tommy and Diana end up fucking (he changed your life sweetie?? really?? you've barely even met him! ONCE! for fucks sake...). this better not turn into some other Tommy and his magic cock shit, I don't want to see it even if it's part of Tommy making bad decision because he's grieving, no, nope. God, I'm gonna be annoyed if it happens. Also, Gina. Gina and Michael?? I don't really miss Michael, I like that they're keeping him out of everything for now. And Gina has me... very confused this season. I hated her so bloody much on s5 and now I'm just confused by her and how she's acting. Hm.
Also, Ada. Brilliant, as usual. Loved Esme, I'm not totally sure she's not lying about the whole sapphire thing. And Lizzie. Oh God, Lizzie. Poor Lizzie damnit. I don't think she'll permanently leave Tommy cause, like, this is her life now. She has nothing else, no one else outside of the Shelby Company and family. I just... I feel so bad for her. just let her be happy đ
I think its easy to think the breath is meant to be Grace because Annabelle answered a tweet ages ago, and said âshe did a lot of breath recordingâ, and it did feel as if the breathing related to Grace and Tommyâs hallucinations of her during Season 5.
Iâm a big lover of Grace, and I love references to the character, but I take your point as Iâm not sure all the breaths in season 6 are a reference to her when I really think about itâŠ. I donât think itâs as simple as that⊠The last breath after Tommy sees Ruby, I would more likely to associate with Polly perhaps?
Also, Cillian spoke about the breathing in relation to season 5 on the sound of Peaky Blinders podcast. He said Anna Calvi was behind a lot of the breathing as she wanted to get inside Tommyâs head. He feels as if itâs not clear cut whose breath it is⊠he talks about the fact it happened during the time her was seeing Grace but it could be herâs, or maybe it could be his.
I guess it could relate to many different woman in his life who still haunt him as well - his mother, Greta, Grace, Polly and Ruby. It will be interesting to see if this stops in the film or not.
Yeah, I think I remembered what Anna Calvi and Cillian had said about it in the back of my mind. I took it far more to be about a psychological state or mood than a literal manifestation of Grace's presence. That just doesn't make sense to me. I doubt it's meant to be any one concrete thing.
Anna Calvi had mentioned something about ... I am going to slaughter this but Tommy's anima or feminine presence. Idk. But I do think it's more about mood than anything specific.
And there was a breath sound in the aftermath of Polly's funeral, I highly doubt that had anything to do with Grace.
The use of sounds like those can have multiple meanings that complete each other, whether you interpret it through the characterâs thoughts and beliefs, state inside the storyline or the hints the director wants to communicate to the viewers. There isnât definitely one clear meaning behind the breath sound effect and I think itâs deliberately like that to be unsettling, but I have personally interpretated its presence in two different complementary ways:
1. Tommyâs perception of himself - the interpretation that could be linked with the hallucinations of Grace is the threads binding the breath sound effect with the curse Tommy thinks he carries within himself.
Grace hallucinations are caused partly by the fact Tommy rehashes Graceâs death, the cursed sapphire representing at the same time his guilt and the idea that he is the curse. The latter slowly imposed itself and got ingrained in Tommyâs mind as his mental health decreased. âAnyone you touch. Which means anyone I touch.â - Ada, without knowing it, reinforced this idea in S5, after Ben Youngerâs death.
An ungraceful line of gothic ghost Grace in S5 supports this idea: âit wasnât the blue stone Tommy, it was you.â. Tommy feels responsible for the death of Grace, Ruby, Polly, Ben Younger, John, etc. The breath sound effect is often present in the event of these deaths. When Grace appears, the breath accompanies her presence. Itâs generally when Tommy is suicidal and she pushes him to end it, to end him and the curse he spreads to anyone he touches.
This potential meaning is more evident in S5 with Graceâs apparitions, despite being very present as well in S6 in the scenes around Rubyâs sickness and death.
âWho brought this on? We brought on this curseâ; âI will undo the many wrongs that I have doneâ; â[âŠ] Ruby will be well if I make amendsâ; âI will make it go away. I will strike a bargain.â - there is this notion that he is soiled and could make up for the bad he inflicted.
On the same note, some sounds of breath are heard at the beginning of Tommyâs encounter with Diana, when he drinks his first mouthfoul of alcohol after 4 years of soberness, the discovery of his (fake) sickness, which could all be seen as events which are further tarnishing / soiling his integrity, and therefore strengthening the curse that is his person.
Throughout S6, he keeps saying he has no limitations, but he in fact keeps crossing them. Heâs just reached a state where it doesnât matter anymore.
2. The audienceâs perception the director may have wanted to communicate - the sound is heard generally in events of high stress for Tommy (and the viewers since we follow him so closely): deaths of Tommyâs loved ones, his daughterâs sickness, meetings with the fascists (Mosley and/or Diana, and even once Nelson), before or during seizures (that I suspect are partly triggered by high stress). We hear the breath sound multiple times during the planned assassination of Mosley and when it fails as well. Even his first mouthful of wine can be catalogued as a high stress element for Tommy. Heâs been sober for 4 years because alcohol was probably worsening his condition on some aspects. He knows how hard itâd been to stop and how easily he could spiralled down again at that point, especially after his daughterâs death. Itâs a bit like jumping from a bridge and not knowing how deep the fall can go before you crash.
He needs the numbness the alcohol provides like he needed the numbness of the opium because his feelings overwhelm him. The breath sounds can be the manifestation of these (sometimes conflicting) feelings: anxiety, fear, guilt, tension, restlessness, regret, frustration, confusion, dejection, distress, etc.
Tommy had been numb for years after the war and Tommyâs feelings are resurfacing after all these traumatic events. There were all in a box he buried inside him and the shell of it is slowly cracking. Itâs overflowing and canât stop once the dam broke.
The choice of these repetitive breaths isnât trivial though. This is a sound that could symbolize panic attacks, difficulties to breath, asphyxia / suffocation, on top of possibly Graceâs last breaths.
-
I think these two interpretations are intertwined. Itâs confusing because itâs a retransmission of how chaotic and muddled it is inside Tommyâs mind, but also how it perpetually goes round in circles (âitâs just myself talking to myself about myselfâ).
(thanks to the list made by @daisybrekker, it was very helpful to check my memories of the scenes)
I'm finally able to watch peaky season 6 and I just-- finished watching fucking episode 3. oh damn. oh damn. how do we move on from here. oh fuck.
