Why a cease-fire is now a real possibility.
The war in Ukraine has reached a turning point. Since the failure of Ukraine’s 2023 counteroffensive, Russia’s full-scale invasion settled into a predictable rhythm of summer and winter offensives, between which the pressure of attacks would ease while Russian units rotated and regrouped. At first glance, this year looks no different. With spring edging into summer, Ukrainian troops in their dugouts along the front are once again seeing the steady rise of Russian strikes and attempted infiltrations. The mood among Ukrainian commanders, however, has changed. Russian attacks are putting less pressure on their units than they did in previous years. Although drone strikes and shelling remain constant, Russian combat performance is waning. In Kyiv, there is a growing optimism that Ukraine can fight Russia to a cease-fire.
Ukraine’s mood shift is not the result of a radical transformation of how the war is being fought but rather stems from a subtle turn in several trends that together point to a major change in the war’s trajectory. For all of 2024 and most of 2025, Russia was able to recruit more soldiers than it was losing, such that Russian forces could increase the intensity of assaults on Ukrainian units even as they suffered high casualties themselves. Ukraine, by contrast, was suffering slightly more casualties than it could offset with new troops, with defensive lines getting thinner and thinner every month. In Moscow, this led to a complacent belief that, even if progress was slow, the Russian military would eventually occupy the entirety of the Donbas, the contested region in eastern Ukraine that Russia laid claim to in 2022. At some point, the Kremlin believed, its gains would accelerate, as international support for Ukraine dried up and as Ukraine struggled to find the combat troops to hold the breadth of the front. This led Moscow to adopt an intransigent stance in negotiations brokered by the United Statesfollowing the reelection of Donald Trump. If talks failed, after all, the Kremlin anticipated getting what it wanted on the battlefield.
Russia, however, is no longer on an inexorable path to achieving even its minimal military objective of securing the Donbas. As Ukraine manages to make gains along the frontline and frustrates Russian offensives, and as the Russian military increasingly feels the strain of the war and the deterioration of its combat power, what has long seemed so implausible has become more likely. Kyiv and its partners could convince Moscow that a cease-fire is its best option.
I feel a bit impatient with the way leftists criticize USAID when you point out that defunding it will have and has already had devastating consequences. "Yes, literally millions of people have died, but have you considered that USAID also was the funding vehicle for stupid and ineffectual schemes to overthrow the Cuban government." Like okay. Which of these things do you think I'm sad about losing? It's just like this absurd tendency to pick at some "ummm actually" in the face of a humanitarian catastrophe.
#I read an article that wholeheartedly argued that USAID literacy programs for women in a highly patriarchal country was imperialist#because that country traditionally had a strong oral tradition of which women were the primary keepers.#And teaching them literacy led to the decline and erasure of that culture.#I shit you not I read this on JSTOR with mine own two eyeballs.#God forbid non-Western women.... read?? And work?? And escape patriarchal abuse??
Another day, another violence-inciting, fake fact about Jews. Getting tired of the internet being over saturated with these.
not only did Jews own all the slaves, they also owned all of the boats used to transfer slaves AND sold all the slaves to others. because yknow. the Jews™️
The worst thing about this conspiracy theory is that it’s completely mathematically impossible. To believe it you have to be either really stupid or really racist. Or both.
To quote noted white antebellum fighter of racism and antisemitism Samuel Clemens aka Mark Twain “There’s 3 kinds of lies, damn lies and statistics.”
It also hugely ignores how slavery heavily influenced the development of Christianity in the United States, which pretty much from the jump was having to grapple with the concept of other human beings being treated as a permanent slave class and yet still being human beings with souls that allegedly Jesus had saved.
Ex: it was a point of tension in colonial Williamsburg whether one should or should not attempt to convert slaves to Christianity. The faction that was for it believed that it would make them better slaves because Christians were inherently better, more obedient and less vice-driven people. The affection that was against it pointed out that there are multiple passages in the Christian Bible that indicate Christians should never keep each other Christians as slaves and that it is morally wrong to enslave a Christian, therefore converting a slave to Christianity essentially means one has to free them. This was all going on WELL before the United States was even a possibility to anyone.
This also meant we got further levels of divergence between northern and southern Christianity as the North became more solidly made of free states and the South clung harder to the institution of slavery (this is not to say primarily Northern Christian denominations never were involved in slavery, Tituba was enslaved by a puritan in Salem after all, they just more firmly split on the point). US Chattel Slavery is VERY heavily entwined with Christianity and the development of Christianity in the US.

Reblogging again for pride month 2025.
This is for all those who were promised community, only to be rejected and banned. To all those who can't wear or fly a Magen David ✡️ without being accused of blood libel. To those who had their community turn their backs on them. To those who have had self-proclaimed nazi punchers spew nazi rhetoric back to their face. To those who are lost. To those that lost friends, lost their sense of belonging, because people stole our word and re-defined it to mean something dirty.
To the queer Jews, and allies, who don't have the same place of belonging that they had before October 7th. To those that aren't here anymore, after. Happy Pride.
2026!
Wishing safety and belonging to everyone, especially my Jewish mishpacha and our allies. 💚🏳️🌈🏳️⚧️✡️
Just a horrible news day for him lmaoooooo
Jake Auchincloss must fall. I'm not a Platner fan but if I lived in Maine I'd hold my nose and vote for him because I'm not an idiot. De facto endorsing Susan Collins is nuts, JFC.
Auchincloss is correct and did not 'de facto endorse Susan Collins' That's not what he said, and that's not what he's advocating for. The Maine Democratic Primary isn't over/wasn't over when he said what he said. David Costello is still in the race. As a Democrat. He's Not a nepobaby private-school scion of a wealthy family war buff mercenary-for-fun who was so stupid he left his sordid reddit history up after making it damn clear he knew what Nazi Tattoo he had on his chest for 20 years and who Ryan Grim and the "Fight Agency" met in a DC bar.
Platner has been treated with kid gloves and the GOP machine is ready not just to tear him apart, but to associate him with the Democratic Party forever if he wins. You can draw a direct line from Platner to Galindo. The party and the country deserve better.

But hey. If platner wins? Vote Blue No Matter Who stops at lying Nazi sociopaths and the agencies and 'journalists' that boost them.
I agree Platner should’ve been forced out instantly. He wasn’t. This is reality now. Costello has no numbers. I stand by what I said re: Maine’s general election and I hope Jake Auchincloss steps on a rake cartoon-style every day forever.
So lemme get this straight. The Dem with worse financials and no nazi tattoo isn't the voice of the people and the Nazi being backed by DC Pundits and PR agencies presented as the authentic blue collar populist man should be supported unreservedly before the primary is over? Is any Democrat who hasn't gone crackers for Graham is tacitly aiding Collins? Or are they understandably wary of hitching their wagon to a woman-hating nazi bigot with zero impulse control vulnerable the kind of oppo that makes the fucks who swift boated kerry sit up and take notice in their retirement homes/golf courses? The GOP is hoping Platner wins the primary. Then whether or not he wins the general the Democrats are "The Nazi Guy and Gal Party" in their media constellation. Why tie yourself to that if you hope to have any future in a hopefully Non-populist democratic party? I get it if you want to sell out and are dumb enough to think people will go for Diet Dem Populism instead of the GOP Original Recipe but like. Fuck. The bar is in heil and they're tunneling under it to the transparent advantage of the GOP.
Numbers = polling. You are an insufferable git, btw.
I don't care about polling when the primary is ongoing because Costello is not a Nazi. Costello is less funded than Platner and has far less free media because he's not a darling of populist ostensibly progressive press and agencies using a nazi to raise their professional profiles. Neither of us is a Maine voter so I'm not sure why you're declaring war on someone in your state who doesn't want to support a rich Nazi running as a Dem (Because a bunch of Dems including Tim Walz decided supporting this guy was a good idea) We've already had Sanders and Fetterman be the great white populist hopes. Platner is worse. Why get insulting to someone who expects better from the Democratic Party and is objecting to your characterization that he's 'de facto endorsing Susan Collins' when Auchincloss and other Dems with brains are declining to hug a poisonous cactus?
"Vote Blue No Matter Who" died November 2024. The Democrats in office, in orgs, and in media backing bigoted actual Nazis because they want a daddy are somehow burying it even deeper.

Graham Platner supported Susan Collins and voted for her multiple times.

We don’t hate the French revolution enough. We think we do, but we don’t.
With all my love, guys, if we're going to get mad about the Galileo affair and its distortion into a martyrdom story by atheists, I think we need to be consistent in our methodology here. The big thing I need to point out is that the quote from the judge shown above? It doesn't come from a primary source; Wikipedia refers to it as a "popular legend," and cites an English historian who specialized in the life of Lavoisier who said back in 1954 that "it is pretty certain that [this quote] was never uttered." And, secondly, we need to be honest here. While the Galileo affair is more complicated than, say, Carl Sagan liked to make it out to be, it was nonetheless fundamentally about Galileo's scientific discoveries and what was said about them. This is not the case with Lavoisier. Lavoisier wasn't killed because of anything related to his scientific discoveries; he was killed because he was a member of a bureaucratic organization that was wildly unpopular with the masses during the ancien régime, and accused of fraudulent tax collection. The French Revolution was often barbaric, but this incident isn't the good comparison that the original post is making it out to be.
Exactly.
Also, who are these academics who "never stop talking about the Pope being mean to Galileo?" Historians of science, like James Hannam and Ronald Numbers, love pointing out the nuances of the Galileo Affair that pop culture misses. This feels like making up a guy to get mad at, and (considering the general content of OP's blog), right-wing anti-intellectualism.
I keep thinking about reading the words “Zionist conspirators” this morning, and how easily phrases like that and “Zionist agenda,” and the juice box and soap emojis as coded symbols, and on and on the dog whistles go, are being tossed around by people who likely don’t consider themselves antisemitic extremists. they think they’re on the side of social justice.
this will be ineloquent, and all of this is far more complicated than can be expressed here, but at the very core, every thread, every strain of antisemitism that we’re witnessing now, and that has persisted for generations, stems from two primary sources.
the first is deicide.
“the Jews killed Jesus.” it doesn’t matter that this is inaccurate. it doesn’t matter that the Catholic Church officially denounced this in 1965. it is so deeply societally ingrained that it’s the foundation for most other libel.
is there a famous figure - celebrity, artist, politician, activist - who died a premature death, no matter the circumstances? you’ll find people saying the Jews murdered them. it may seem ridiculous, it may contradict known evidence, yet still, the idea that the Jews are behind it will insidiously spread. if this person is deemed unfairly persecuted or put on a godlike pedestal in any way, the insistence the Jews destroyed and silenced them will increase further. all of that reaction is linked to the original charge of the crucifixion, though of course most people would never admit or even recognize this. the Jews as usurpers and destroyers of the “light” is practically a default concept. (((they))) are responsible for the suffering and injustice in the world. blood libel is directly linked to deicide too - Jews as murderers of the pure, the children, drunk on the blood of goodness. when you see anything about “occult illuminati rituals,” it’s also that ancient idea rebranded. (to borrow a quote: y’all haters corny with that Illuminati mess.)
the second source is the Protocols of the Elders of Zion (and, before that, it could be argued Martin Luther’s On The Jews and Their Lies, though that ties back to the deicide charge too). this is why, ceaselessly, relentlessly, we see it said that Jews control the media, Jews are behind every war and conflict, Jews are behind disasters and terror attacks, Jews are the nefarious overlords manipulating innocent gentile minds, Jews are slavers, Jews are exploiting you and taking your money and puppeteering your politicians, Jews are trying to denigrate society. Nazi concepts of degeneracy and subhuman nature originate from those strains of Jew hatred that had led to the pogroms and slaughter of Jews for centuries. add the eugenicist race science to legitimize it, but at the core it’s reliant on the concept of “Jewish supremacy” snaking across the world to pollute the strong and the wholesome, to destroy the righteous. Soviet propaganda branched from this same tree too.
every single day, every time anyone posts vile comments that parrot this rhetoric, they are leaning on and learning from generation upon generation of propaganda, lies, conspiracies, and violent hatred that existed before them. antisemitism may shapeshift to fit the times, its language may transform and modernize, its stereotypes may be covered in a new coat of paint, but at its very foundations, it’s always the same.
the fact that there’s not a single post for Jewish American heritage month that isn’t overrun with virulent hate in the comments, the fact that no pop culture event or fandom space exists without being inundated with anti-Jewish conspiracies, the fact that every conceivable public figure is tied somehow to their relationship (existent or otherwise) to Jews (either to deem them as a cohort of the wicked “Zionists,” or to martyr them as a victim of the wicked “Zionists”), the fact that history is being relentlessly distorted and erased to either demonize, discredit, or obliterate Jewish history and culture, the fact that Jews being stabbed and shot and firebombed across the diaspora is celebrated, called “deserved,” and when any Jew mourns they’re attacked with “victim card” and derision and cruelty and death threats, it all comes from the same place.
people think they’re “noticing” something new and “waking up,” and the tragedy of it is actually that they’re just perpetuating cycles of hatred and violence that have predated them for millennia, and they enjoy it, like all their predecessors did, and they will never work to unlearn it, and though we do our best to survive and rise above it, we can never wholly combat it, we can never wholly escape it, so it consistently recurs, like a plague with no immunity.
