I don’t think I’ll ever get over how well Project Hail Mary has expressed a very important lesson throughout the storyline:

Just because you meet people, learn from them, grown from them, spend time with them, know them, understand them, it doesn’t necessarily mean you have to always be with them.

The people you meet aren’t always the people you’re meant to stay with, and that’s okay. You don’t have to be there out of obligation every time.

Like when Grace picks Rocky and going to Eridan over going back to Earth, and even when he gets a second chance to leave he asks to “wait on it”. Because he wasn’t ever truly meant to be on Earth, maybe a part oh him deep in his soul always longs for the stars (like what is the coincidence that he’s the only one who survived the trip there??). Even when he was “home”, he either spent most of his time teaching other people about space, or learning more about it himself.

He’s like Laika in a very symbolic way- they were both truly too good for Earth after all, the ambassadors of one way travel.
