Her mother predated the law, by years. “My mother died long before the law came into place. Back when the royals didn’t have hide behind a law giving them permission.” Belle shrugged. “Like you said, I don’t trust your brother. I think, honestly, he’d kill me if he thought he could get away with it. Do I think your brother would avoid putting you at risk? I sincerely hope so, but he doesn’t give me much cause to believe that. Regardless to what he does or doesn’t do, I will continue to protect you to the best of my abilities Violet.”

Violet nodded, “Thank you Belle. I know you really have no reason to want to be nice to me in any way, but I do honestly appreciate all of the kindness you’ve shown me while I’ve been here.” She smiled softly, “If you do ever want to talk about it... I mean, I know what it’s like to lose your parents at a young age.”

His arm was wrapped around her automatically when she leaned her head against his shoulder. “I know… I think a lot of us won’t forget the look on her face… It’s hard to stop thinking about it, so I understand.”

Violet closed her eyes for a moment, sighing. “I’d never seen someone die before...” she said softly. “I mean, it’s not the first time I’ve dealt with death, but watching it happen... I don’t even know how to describe it.”

Henry frowned down at his sister as she pulled away, shaking his head as he met her gaze. “And what will that do?” He asked, “Other then put our fate into the hands of them? Don’t you see how disposable we are to them?” Henry paused for a moment, “If anything, this means we need to get off this island quicker and smarter then we were before. They can’t be trusted and as soon as something doesn’t go their way, we’re as good as dead. If you’re up to it, I want to start training you. Basic self defense. Weapons training. Things that can keep you alive if it comes down to it.”

“It will keep you safe!” Her voice broke, but she didn’t break her brother’s gaze. “Henry... you saw what they did to her, they’ll do the same thing to you and I can’t let that happen, I can’t lose you, I can’t...” Violet looked away, wiping away the tears that had been streaming down her cheeks, she nodded without looking at him.

“Okay, “ he nodded, before sitting down by her side. “I’m as okay as someone can be in a situation like this,” he shrugged lightly, before letting out a small sigh, he could lie, but he knew that he would be horrible at it. Not even trying to lie about how he was, he would be able to. “I think all the royals are pretty down right now.”

Violet leaned towards Carlos, resting her head against his shoulder. She blinked hard, anything to try to erase the image that seemed to be burned into her retinas. “I just... I can’t stop seeing the look on her face.”

Celestine had been wondering down the beach in an almost daze. Needing to keep moving otherwise all the reasons that she wasn’t okay, how every second on this island was leaving her feeling more war torn and hollow than ever before. Even if the princess had known what she was doing by creating the fires, that didn’t mean it hurt any less to see one of their own killed in combat. Celestine didn’t think they would actually go through with it. How foolish that past thought had been. 

The soft sob catching her ears, a light frown pulled onto her features as she caught sight of the balled figure. Even if they wanted to be left alone, she couldn’t simply walk past someone who was so clearly in distress. Not when she atleast recognized their frame. The face finally registering in her mind after a moment or so. She only knew Violet in passing, mainly from the small pieces that Henry had told her over the years or he odd photograph and glimpse at various events. Even if she didn’t want to talk, the comfort of another person could sometimes be enough. “It’s Violet, non? Henry’s sister?” Celestine inquired, her voice soft, not wanting to alarm the girl any more than necessary. 

Violet looked up, eyebrows furrowing as she tried to place where she knew, if she knew the other woman. She nodded, wiping away a tear, from her cheek, as if the action would somehow erase that it had ever been there. “You’re a friend of his...” Violet started slowly, “The French princess?” she asked, “I’m sorry, I can’t remember your name.”

            being perpetually drunk was probably not going to do much for her in the long run but given the state of things, was there really anything else to do? everything seemed to have flipped from one second to another and while she’d found herself often wishing that the royalty on the island understood that they hadn’t been brought to this island for an all expenses paid vacation, this wasn’t the way she would have imagined or liked for that mattered. the way most of them now huddled together, many of them not wanting to be alone, being feared was not all that it was cracked up to be. she almost felt idiotic for having wished for that but there wasn’t much she could do. they couldn’t take what happened back, and they couldn’t make up for it, no matter how hard they tried. 

so she was walking across the beach, her trusty flask in hand, only to come to a halt as she spotted the american princess at a short distance. she’d walk around her without saying a word or at least that was the idea up until she heard her sob. that made her stop dead in her tracks, a heavy sigh slipping past her lips as she reached into one of her pockets, pulling out a few napkins. “ here… “ her voice was gentle, as she held them out for the girl to take. “ it’ll help keep the sand out of your eyes. “

Violet silently took the napkins, eyes still fixed on the horizon, refusing to look at the pirate and risk meeting her eyes. How could she? Rationally, she knew that not all of the pirates were responsible for what had happened, but Violet still couldn’t shake the uneasy feeling whenever she saw any of the pirates ever since that day. 

She used one of the napkins to blow her nose, and let out a soft sigh. “I just want to go home.”

Seeing all the royals being down, was something that broke his heart, especially because of the reasons behind it. He also wasn’t in that great mood, after seeing the princess being killed, he wasn’t being able to even smile again. He couldn’t help but think about what happened, the scene kept on repeating over and over again, not being able to think about something else. He was sure that the island would be that way for a while, everyone, with sad faces and frustrated, some even angry, he was sure that they would stay months like that. Once he got to the beach, he saw a familiar face, Violet, sitting down on the sand and looking at the ocean, she seemed to be having a hard time not to break down into tears. “Hey,” he said with a half smile. “Do you mind company?”

Violet looked up at the sound of the familiar voice and wiped a tear away from her cheek when she saw Carlos standing there. “Please,” she said quietly, “Of course I don’t mind.” She tried to smile, but she couldn’t convince herself that she meant it. She suspected it would take a little while before that happened. “How are you doing?”

Henry frowned, pulling her against him, pushing a strand of hair out of her face as he pulled his sister even closer. “I know, Vi. I know. I am so sorry you had to see that.” Really, the fact that his sister had to witness any of this tore him to pieces. She didn’t deserve this. Any of this. “Fuck, Vi. I tried so hard to protect you from all of this. I am so sorry.”

Violet leaned into her brother’s chest, her body shaking with silent sobs. She kept replaying the image of the Ukranian princess over and over in her head, and in the back of her mind were the questions she dared not voice. Was that the expression on her parents’ faces when they died? Were they just as terrified? Did they see it coming? Loss was an unfortunately familiar feeling to her, but in all of that, she’d never actually witnessed anyone die, at least, not until now. She stayed there for a moment, before she pulled back just enough to look Henry in the eye, “Henry, you need to stop. You need to stop trying to find a way out of here,” her voice broke on the last word, but she didn’t break eye contact with her brother.

The execution of the Ukrainian princess seemed to be hard on all the royals, including Veronica.  Veronica didn’t even consider it an execution, it was a murder.  It was a cold blooded murder.  They didn’t have to kill her, they could have locked her away in the Tulach house of in the dungeons, but no. They took her life.  Veronica didn’t even know this girl, but she was saddened by the fact that she would never breathe again and that she did it all for the people on the island.  Veronica still thought that the whole plan was idiotic, but still, she grieved not just the loss of a life, but the loss of a sense of security.

She knew the pirates could do whatever they liked to them, but it wasn’t real until now.  That sense of fear was heavy, and lingered over her shoulder during every moment.  Veronica was an outspoken and tough girl, but she wanted to shut down.  She felt she had to.  It was a matter of survival now.

When she saw Violet on the dock, she couldn’t help but approach.  Veronica may not want have wanted to lead a revolution at the moment, but she could help another struggling princess.  She sat next to her on the dock and wrapped a protective arm around her.  “I’m so sorry you had to see that. It’s not fair, what happened.”  She looked out towards the sea.  “Those salvajes will pay for what they’ve done, one way or another.”

Violet smiled weakly at the other princess, instinctively leaning her head against Veronica’s shoulder. “Every time I close my eyes... all I can see is the expression on her face.” Violet spoke softly, voice barely a whisper. “How could they just kill her like that?”

Henry had been working himself to exhaustion, that afternoon he had taken to the beach. Ready to work out as much of his anger as he possibly could at the moment. That was, until he saw the familiar figure of his sister sitting on the docks. Immediately he forgot all of his plans, quickly moving to the water to comfort his sister. “Vi?” He asked, moving to sit down beside her, “What is going on? Did anyone hurt you? Are you alright?”

Violet looked up at her brother, hot tears streaming down her face. “I... the look on her face... I can’t stop seeing it.” She buried her head in her knees, wanting nothing more than to just disappear. She could still hear the sound of the sword as it sliced through the other princess, and it kept echoing in her ears, playing on a loop.

Violet sat on the dock, hugging her knees to her chest. A tear trickled down her cheek, but she ignored it, eyes fixed on the horizon in front of her. She couldn’t get the image out of her head, of the Ukranian princess... her face as Alex’s sword drove through her body. She felt sick to her stomach, and the image replayed itself every time she closed her eyes. She hugged her knees tighter, knuckles white, as if pulling her legs into her chest was somehow managing to keep her together. 

A soft sob escaped her lips, her chest ached with how badly she wanted to go home. For the first time since shortly after she arrived, Violet was truly terrified. They had killed her so easily, if they caught Henry with his radio... Violet couldn’t help but imagine the worst. She usually tried so hard to be optimistic, but when she tried to search for a silver lining here, nothing happened. All she could feel was a sense of dread in the pit of her stomach.

“You both have more reason than most? Same works in reverse Princess. I doubt your brother told you, but watched my mother die when I was a child at the hands of royalty. I only lived because a prince petitioned his father not to kill a child. Nearly every pirate on this island has lost someone because of the law your brothers created. For what it’s worth, you have me. I will try to ensure nothing bad happens to you here.” Any one that tried would face her wrath. “I trust you Violet, but I can’t say I trust your brother, because that would be a lie. Pretty sure he would murder me in my sleep if he thought it wouldn’t come back on him. But I do agree, I’d like to think he was smarter, but we’ll see. You don’t want to lose your brother, but someone tried to kill my crew.”

Violet sat up straighter, a thoughtful expression on her face, “Belle... I had no idea. I’m so sorry that happened to you, for what it’s worth, I never agreed with their law, not that I could do much to stop it, or even scale it back. I was 12, our parents had just been murdered...” Violet trailed off. She hated talking about that period of her life, it just forced her to remember thing she would rather not. “It wasn’t Henry. I know you don’t trust him, but you and I both know he wouldn’t do anything if he thought it would put me at risk, including something like this.”

“And pray. I don’t know if there’s a god but he or she is getting a lot of prayers right now. We just need to focus on keeping him in one piece. We’ll get through this. You’re both strong.”

Violet smiled softly, “That’s kind of you to say, but it’s been a long time since I’ve believed in anything enough to pray.”
