Once when I was in undergrad, someone described something as “problematic” in class and our professor was like, “That’s cool, but ‘problematic’ doesn’t really mean anything. It means that the thing you’re describing has a problem, and in and of itself that’s not bad. Art, especially, should always have problems, or else it’s not interesting and not art, either. It sounds like you’re trying to say that this is bad, but you don’t want to say ‘bad.’ Is that right?”

So from then on whenever one of us called something problematic, he would make us talk it out until we could name the “bad” thing we were hinting at. In this particular class, 7/10 it was some type of oppression, and the remainder was like, “I’m uncomfortable because this is very new/confusing/pushing boundaries that made me feel safe.”

Once we stopped calling things “problematic” and stopping at that, class got way more interesting and... we all had to say, like, “that’s racist” or “that’s misogynistic” or “ew capitalism gross” out loud, which a lot of us had never done in a classroom before. Or we had to be like, “Uhhh... I’m not sure what’s so bad?” and confront our own beliefs and that was maybe even more useful.

Anyway. Whenever I see the word problematic, I can’t help but think of this professor being like, “Good starting point, now let’s get specific.” I think when we have to commit to saying “that’s ___” it requires a lot more careful thought about the truth and impact and complexities of whatever we’re claiming. Sometimes there really is some bullshit afoot, and also sometimes it’s art, and it should be full of problems, because that’s what art is.

Member of Third Squadron, a group of robots working in Eclipse's most fruitful mine, the "Anthill." Hates his work and glosses over the specifics; calls himself a 'minerals analyst.'

Superficially charming; does everything in his power to come across as sophisticated, scholarly - highly educated, even by Eclipse's standards, ideally on par with ( if not superior to ) the Ministry of Science's professors.

Goes out of his way to see stage plays, watch operas, visit fine art museums and modern galleries; anything to establish that he is High-Society and Very Impressive.

Manipulative. Self-serving. Self-aggrandizing. Glory-seeking. Pro Mind Game player. A complete fucking asshole in the way people tend to think of when they hear 'narcissist.' Most people don't pick up on it until it's too late -- or someone else he's discarded warns them.

Nosy. As. Fuuuuuck.

Artificial skin is a pearlescent lilac-blue, very similar to the rest of his lustrous armor. Gives him an ethereal quality many people find ✨ striking.✨

If we ship something (or our characters otherwise have a very developed relationship romantic or not) know that I definitely want to talk about it. All the time. I am totally willing to talk headcanons, scenarios, do plotting, all of that– but I don’t want to seem like I’m being pushy by bringing our muses’s relationship up. I just want to know that if I do talk about that sort of stuff with our characters that I don’t come off as annoying… Or seem like all that I’m thinking about is our ship. If you do let me know it’s okay to talk about it whenever, though, totally expect me to send you anything I think of when it comes to our muses relationship! There’d certainly be no shortage of things to talk about. I just want to make sure that you’re just as engaged in it as I am.

Back when she was on the Skull Sub, most of her little 'minons,' as Flash Man put it, were animals. Battontons, and the like. Even as 'Aviation Woman' she adored them. But Medley didn't really care too much about the Shotmans or the Scworms Flash Man housed. "I'm surprised you guys even utilize anything like that. What the heck are they for?"

Stating the obvious — and being a raging asshole about it — would’ve made for perfect retaliation for the brat's ongoing sass, but Flash Man couldn't just summon a shotman and project a huge, flickering arrow to point at its cannon, so he let the impulse pass.

"Surveilance, maintenance, survey data -- n' defense, obviously." Flash sat tight where he was, craning his neck to get a look at the diagnoistic window. Just in case Medley screwed it up, somehow. "They run their CPUs hot doin' their jobs to the best of their ability, but some of 'em haven't been hittin' their targets lately. Some of 'em might need a couple replacements."
