My friend told me he didn’t like Bernie Sanders. His logic was that Bernie’s ‘revolution’ (or reform, lets call it reform) was dividing power among left leaning groups. “Gringos all had to band together and defeat Trump, who represents the worst of all of these universes”. I didn’t agree, because Bernie’s group was evidence of the possibility of pushing the Democrats more to the left, as well as America changing for the better. Trump won, Hillary lost. This is either the prelude to the death of the US led world order or the disease before the cure.
Now, the vote is something that if you believe in democracy, should be a sacred act. One is allowed to exercise it, one is allowed to not vote. As a Puerto Rican, and seeing the dominion of the two main parties, I refused to vote for the lesser of two evils and I voted for the workers’ party like a good socialist boy should have. They lost, but I slept soundly knowing I voted for the one with the charisma of a rock but the needed policy changes we needed.
Now I’m in Illinois. JB Pritzker is on the run for governor and he is rich as fuck. His opponent is Bruce Rauner, who is also rich as fuck. I think both of them are shady, evil characters, but at least one is for legalizing weed, right? I guess in this case since conservatives have mostly lost it (though I guess folks like my dad and some of my classmates aren’t all that bad, as well as the libertarians possibly being a crowd we might need to persuade in the future), I’m willing to vote for the guy that wants to legalized weed and is SWEARING TO HELP OUT OUR MARGINALIZED COMMUNITIES blah blah blah, because once he passes the legalization of weed we can find something to put him in jail for. But, this isn’t democratic, ain’t it? This electoral system is NOT DEMOCRATIC.
It’s not democratic because of two ingrained parties within a system triumphing over independent candidates. It is because we see the need for left winged policies to makeup for a lot of the errors the right winged economic ones that we are trying to get the democrats to transition into a left winged party instead of a centrist one. it is because we keep having to vote for a lesser of two evils or not vote at all. Frankly speaking, if I could vote in the 2016 presidential elections, I wouldn’t have the moral fiber to vote for Hillary because she was SUCH A HORRIBLE CANDIDATE. The email scandal wasn’t even the biggest thing, her whole history in politics is one mired in controversy. I don’t care if Hillary would have saved us all from Trump, that universe is another one. This universe, we had to deal with a worst case scenario. Giant evil or less Giant Evil.
So, before somebody makes me write a 10 page term paper on why people should not have to vote for the lesser of two evils if they don’t want to, lets skip all that and leave those who didn’t have weak moral fiber alone, ok?
Reminder: The democrats are a centrist politcal group that has tendencies to swing left due to its voter base, not a true leftist political group. So, it is no surprise leftists did not vote democrat, and specifically not Hillary.
