Steve laughed. “I never pictured pig stys as being particularly big.  I feel a little offended that a pig gets a bigger home than I used to have,” he teased playfully.  “Is it strange that I want to see a pig sty now for myself?”

He clinked the glass against hers.  “To us,” he echoed and took a sip.  He set his glass down and curled an arm around her waist.  “I’m sorry for startling you with that,” he said as he drew her in against him.  He began to sway with her to the music. “I truly didn’t mean to.”

He caressed her cheek with the back of his fingers as he continued to sway, giving her just enough room for her to drink her champagne if she wanted to.  “I was thinking we shouldn’t rush,” he said.  “To bed that is.  We can take a walk to the beach.  Have some dinner.  Sit in the hot tub for a while.  Then if we’re both feeling it.  What do you think?”

"We have big pigs!" She laughed as well and shrugged. "And a lot of 'em too. I think my folks felt bad that I always cried whenever we had to sell them." Virginia was grateful that her parents always took care of her and even spoiled her a bit despite the hard times they went through. "You can, you know! Maybe when we visit South Carolina we can see if there's time to visit the farm?" That was another big step they would make one day. She was a little sad she'd never be able to meet Sarah Rogers, but at least she could introduce Steve to her family.

Virginia took a sip of hers as well. As they began swaying, she felt like she was right exactly where she was meant to be. A giggle left her and she smirked. "It's alright, sugar. You'll just have to make it up with more kisses." She teased lightly.

A soft, contented sigh left her as Steve caressed her cheek. Ginny leaned into the feeling as she listened to him speak, her hand gently squeezing his shoulder. "I agree. I want us to take our time, make it romantic. I think all of that would be so swell. I bet the sky will be beautiful at sunset, maybe we can sit in the hottub and watch it?" She took another sip of champagne as she gazed up at him. "I think we ought to make the most of his vacation anyway. I can't wait to actually sleep in tomorrow and not have to leave your side."

Steve's stomach was full of butterflies.  Seeing her as excited as she was about how this room was set up reminded him of why they were here.  He loved her so much and he was excited for his first time making love, but he was so nervous.  He was sure he wasn’t going to live up to the expectation.

He took the bottle from her and kissed her softly. “It’s really fancy. I’ve never been somewhere like this either.  My apartment in New York wasn’t this big,” he admitted. 

He worked the foil off the top of the bottle and pushed on the cork with his thumb.  It popped off and shot across the room, hitting the wall.  He laughed. “Whoops,” he said.

He went and grabbed the glasses and filled them, then set the bottle back into the ice and brought her glass to her.  “Here we are, my love,” he said.

While this was not Virginia's first time, it would be her first time with someone she loved and trusted. Someone who made her feel desired for her brain and humor and her, not just her blonde hair or pretty face or petite body. She loved Steve, and while she was very excited for this time together she also felt a little nervous. Yes she had more experience than he did, but it was still a big step in the relationship.

She happily returned his kiss, tender and sweet as she let him take the bottle. "I reckon this is about the size of our pig sty." She said with a chuckle as she looked around the room again. "Maybe two of 'em!"

As Steve worked open the wine, Virginia took a look at the records that were sitting out. There was an Ella Fitzgerald record, and as she set it on the turntable, she heard the loud pop, making her yelp and then laugh as well. "Stevie!" She laughed again and placed a hand over her heart. "Scared the Dickens out of me!" With an affectionate shake of her head the record started to play and she made her way back over to Steve.

"To us?" Her glass lifted in a toast, her free hand resting on his shoulder.

He smiled and nodded.  “Yeah.  Well if you become a film star, we can go anywhere you want.  We’ll look into it.  It’s so hard to know because right now you can’t go anywhere in Europe.  And Hawaii’s not safe either after Pearl Harbor.  Hopefully the war doesn’t last too long, and things all open up again.” 

He leaned in and kissed her cheek.  “But as long as we’re together, that’s the main thing.”

They went inside together and checked in.  Steve handed over his ID, and after being congratulated the bell hop carried their bags to the honeymoon suite.

It was beautiful, with a window that looked out over the ocean.  A hot tub on the back deck, and a big canopy bed.  Because of their lie, the hotel had included a bottle of champagne, hand made truffles, and some fresh fruit, and they were sitting on the table with a welcome note.  Steve tipped the bellhop and looked around. “What do you think, Ginny?  Would you like some champagne?”

When the couple entered the suite Virginia broke out into a smile and her belly fluttered in excitement. "Thank you, sir." She said as the bellhop left and then turned to Steve. "It's so beautiful!" She grinned up at him and squeezed his hand before she wandered aroud the room to look at everything. "I've never had anything like this before!" How many unmarried woman could say they stayed in a gorgeous hotel room with champagne, a hot tub, and hand made treats?

"I would love some champagne. And perhaps a dance." Making her way back over to him, she shed herself of her jacket and picked up the bottle of champagne. She gently pressed it into his hands, standing just inches from him now. "Open it and I'll put a record on for us?" Her voice was a soft, whispered purr as her eyelashes fluttered up at him.

Steve hummed in thought and moved his hand to Virginia’s thigh.  “I don’t really know,” he admitted.  “I never left New York before this tour and I never expected to be able to afford to go very far.  I also never really expected to get married, so aside from thinking about how my old church would be a nice place for a wedding, I never pictured what a wedding would be like very much.” He smiled and glanced at her out of the side of his eye.  “You opened a whole world up to me, sweetheart,” he said. “I would like to see more of the world.  But I guess it depends on if we can afford flights and how much of the world is open.  I mean - Paris is the city of love but I doubt it’ll be open and romantic right after the war is finished.  I guess, if we could afford it, I’d like to see Ireland.  I’ve never been and it’s where my family is.  Otherwise, maybe Mexico?  Or the Florida Keys?   What do you think?  Where would you like to go?” He laughed when she pinched him.  “It’s going to be so nice.  Forest.  Beach.  A cozy room and you.”

The drive was nice.  A couple of hours down the highway passing beautiful scenery.  And they pulled into the hotel, finding a parking sport.  It was a big wood cabin styled place, but with wisteria in bloom all over it.  Steve came around and opened the door for her.  “Now remember, Ginny.  We’re newlyweds.”

Virginia's eyes lit up at his words and she sighed dreamily. "Oh Stevie, that would all be wonderful. I would love to see Ireland with you, if it doesn't cost too much. Maybe when I become a big movie star we can go." Now that she had one movie under her belt, Virginia felt like it was inevitable she would become a big movie star. "Paris would be so lovely too! Hmm... I would love to see London, myself. Or Florida would be swell, it never snows there! Maybe even Hawaii?" The possibilities felt endless with him by her side and the whole world to see once the war was over.

Finally they reached the hotel and Ginny was more than ready to get out and stretch her legs. "Oh, how beautiful." She breathed out as she took in the blooming flowers and cozy atmosphere. "It wil not be too hard to pretend to be newlyweds." She whispered with a wink. Taking hold of his arm, she took the lighter bags while letting him take the heavier ones and the two walked into the lobby.

((*cough* hi! It's been a minute lmao I'm sorry I disappeared! I have no excuse tbh, I get in my head and anxious and I feel like I can't come back to this blog if it's been a while. But i'm here now and I'm going to work on some stuff while I try to stay awake for the new year!!))

When Virginia took his hand, he lifted it and kissed her knuckles.  “You’re very welcome, Ginny,” he said.  “I’m really looking forward to it too.  We’ve been working so consistently, it’s nice just to have a break.”  He glanced at her and smiled. “But you’re right, it does feel a little like a honeymoon.  Hopefully when we do get to go on one of those, we’re able to make it really special.” 

He grinned and ran his thumb over the back of her knuckles. “Oh you did, did you?  I look forward to seeing it.  Hopefully you packed your swimsuit too, because we should be able to get some time in the water too.  But I can’t wait to see what you brought with you.” 

He kissed her hand again and then let his hand rest on his lap.  “I hope the hotel lives up to the pictures too.”

Virginia sighed happily and gently patted Steve's thigh. She leaned against the middle panel of the car, attempting to be as close as she could to him. "Where would you want to go on a honeymoon, when we do go on one?" It was nice to think about their future in that way, to imagine all the little and big details of their lives.

Reaching out to turn on the car's radio, she grinned back at him and giggled mischievously. "Mmm, I sure did. Something special just for you." She teased and playfully pinched his thigh. "Oh, I'm looking forward to going swimming. It's been too long." She was sure the hotel would be wonderful no matter what. Of course they both wanted this vacation to be special and romantic, Steve was that type of man and Ginny learned that she quite enjoyed it as well. But she would also be happy spending time with him in a cardboard box.

Ginny sang along to the radio once she found a station playing music as Steve drove, and before she knew it they arrived up to a grand hotel.

Steve grinned at her.  He was definitely having an interesting adjustment period from having no money to having savings.  Most days it was okay, the show covered the hotels and their food, he had nothing to spend it on, so it just accumulated in his banks and then something extravagant he could buy Virginia would show up and he’d blow a bunch wanting her to feel special, and then he’d feel guilty that he hadn’t put it away for their future.

But this was a special occasion, and the war really put the future into question, so they might as well enjoy things while they could.

He opened the door for her and when she was in the car he closed it and jogged around to the otherside, sliding into the seat next to her.

He laughed at her shout of excitement and started the car, pulling out of the hotel.  “This is going to be such a nice weekend.  I lied to the hotel and said we were newly weds.  You have your promise ring, so no one will know,” he said.  Nice hotels didn’t like renting rooms to unmarried couples and this was a way they couldn’t check to see if they were or not.  Besides, it added a little anonymity to everything.

This weekend getaway was something Virginia was very excited about. She wanted to spend time with Steve, alone, as a couple for so long. And now they were finally getting to, and not only that, they got to play as a married couple. The idea made her tummy flutter as she imagined for a moment being his wife in the future. When Steve started to drive, she took his free hand in hers and smiled affectionately over at him with sparkling eyes.

"I love you so much, shug. Thank you for planning all of this for us." She whispered and gently brought his hand up to her lips, giving him a kiss on the back of his hand. "It feels like a small honeymoon in a way, you know?" She smiled at the thought and then her lips turned unto a playful smirk. "I even have something nice to wear for you."
