Having big feelings about these two
(For the 2,435th day in a row)
wanted to draw something soft with these two :›
so interesting how each of les amis represents a different facet of hugo’s ideology. enjolras is republicanism as whole; combeferre, the importance of education and scientific progress; courfeyrac, being a chill guy who fucks; grantaire, yapping…
One thing about the “permetes-tu” scene that nobody ever talks about enough is the imagery of Enjolras pinned to the wall by bullets (like a crucifixion) and Grantaire falling at his feet (as if in worship) and now I’m crazy again
Dudddde what if we were foils and you were beautiful and i was ugly and you have revolution in your eyes and i believe in nothing and you chastely drop your eyes at all things that were not the republic and i stare fixedly at all women and you were absolute in your ideas and i was shapeless and you pitied me and i venerated you and you scorned me and i admired you and you disdained me and i loved you. What if in the presence of you i became someone once more, what if i was charmed by your chaste, healthy, firm, upright, hard, candid nature without me being clearly aware of it and without the idea of explaining it to myself occurring, what if i had need of you, what if i were your unaccepted pylades what if bro can you hear me
hello enjoltaire nation, today I give you another offering
"but what if enjolras secretly admired grantaire the whole time" "enjolras who deeply respects grantaire and holds intellectual debates with him" "what if grantaire actually had good points and enjolras listened to him" i cannot stress enough that the character you're talking about is COMBEFERRE. grantaire is the cynic whose unbelief in the revolution couldn't be moved, not even by his love for enjolras, until the very end (see this post). he's the cynic who exists in the shadow of enjolras. combeferre is the philosophy of the revolution to enjolras' logic. he's the one who's been at enjolras' side this whole time. he complements and corrects him. if anyone is enjolras' verbal sparring partner, intellectual equal, and the only one who can change his mind, it's combeferre. also why are we still doing "grantaire had a point and les amis should hear him out" in 2025
Beyond the barricade, is there a world you long to see?
in all timelines, in all possibilities, only you
today i am thinking about the eight bullets that kill enjolras, and how i always see people saying they represent his eight friends to die at the barricade, but when i first read his death what came to my mind was the eight men to escape the barricade alive: valjean, marius, javert, and the five men who are given the national guard uniforms. i think of those eight bullets being meant for those eight men, and enjolras taking them all. he did not change the world in the way he meant, but he changed the world for eight men, and that has to be enough.
I know this isn’t necessarily meant to be trans Enjolras but to me this really feels so personal to me as an ftm person
