Tex has a son who is small, and skinny, and his wrists look so fragile that Tex thinks he could snap them if heās not carefulā¦ and yet, Keith is faster than any man in the unit, he can carry two people back to safety in a single trip and lift beams larger than Tex himself.

Sure, there's a chance that even with his dad alive Keith would still want to join the garrison, but I also like the idea of him choosing to stay closer to the desert (and blue!)
Here are some things I was thinking about this AU:
-There is one universe where Tex died in a fire, but in THIS universe he survives the fire.
-His brush with death makes Tex aware that he needs to have a larger support for his child, so he makes some changes: he takes more desk time whenever possible, and forges deeper bonds with his fellow firemen; Keith now has half a dozen different godfathers who could take him in if Tex ever falls in the line of duty.
-With his father alive Keith has the chance to learn who (and what) his mother is, where she is and most importantly, what his father is protecting in the desert.
-Keith reasons that should anything happen to his dad, the keeping of the Blue Lion would fall on him, and it'd be difficult to do that if he's stuck in a military school; instead of going to the Garrison he decides to stay and become a fireman.
-There might have been a row at some point because of this (since Keith had said over and over how much he wanted to become a pilot before), but Keith is stubborn and got his way. Besides, if he really wanted to, there's always flight simulators.
-With Tex alive Keith never loses his alien roots. Tex knows enough galran to at least read the controls of a spaceship, and he passes this knowledge to Keith.
-Tex also gives Keith his mother's knife, not just for sentimental reasons, but also because Krolia showed him how to receive and send signals with it.
-Keith grows up in the desert, he still has poor people skills but heās less conflicted about them; he also has a few quirks here and there that don't look entirely human (like the super strenght), but Tex assures him "your mother used to do that too" and therefore he's more confortable on his skin.
-Keith still aced the flight simulator during Shiro's visit to his school; he never steals Shiro's car but neither does he accept the offer to join the Garrison. Their friendship might develop after Shiro's continuos tries to recruit Keith.
They are the ultimate introvert alliance, they are both autistic, they both like cryptids. Their older brothers are best friends. They are small but deadly. They can both Hotwire a car in under fifteen seconds. They watch old alien documentaryās together and laugh at the inaccuracies.
Even more Keith headcannons because my health is getting even worse
- if he feels safe, he can fall asleep literally anywhere
- if you canāt find him, itās very likely heās just chilling on a roof somewhere
- he was the type of kid to eat bugs off the ground
- he used to bite people as a kid and since he has sharp teeth heās caused a lot of damage
- he can see really well in the dark and so he never really bothers to turn lights on. The amount of times Shiro and Adam have found him cooking in the middle of the night in the dark is astounding
- can drive anything, you give him a set of controls and he will figure it out in seconds
- one time he refused to eat anything but animal crackers for two straight weeks, Shiro was so done
- since he grew up in the desert he never learned how to swim. He never mentioned this to anyone and one time he went to the lake with Shiro and Adam and almost drowned
- he chews on his lip a lot and since his teeth are so sharp itās a miracle he hasnāt bitten through them
- if you wake him up you will end up with a knife to your throat, itās a reflex and I canāt be stopped
- plays the knife game when he gets bored and has almost given Shiro multiple heart attacks
- if you leave him alone for a second he will wander off, Shiro learned this the hard way it involved an alligator, a tree, and Keith getting a new tooth to add to his collection
- he gets sensory overload very easily, he will start mumbling and get ready irritated, just get him some headphones and turn the lights off and heāll feel better
- has a very high pain tolerance and Shiro has had to drag him kicking and screaming to the nurses office on multiple occasions for a broken bone he said āwasnāt a big dealā
I wish we couldāve seen what a beb Keith and Krolia were like together š
Keith would toootally have been a trouble maker lol. Saw a photo online and I really enjoyed the dynamic. I had sm fun doing Keith and Krolia. The bg tho? Not so much.
Keith stole Shiroās car cuz of the whole āI push them away before they reject meā thing. Keith probably really wanted to be picked by Shiro. And hearing how the teacher was talking about him made him feel like Itās not gonna happen.
And Shiro picked him anyway despite what the teacher said and Keithās attempts to ruin it. That probably meant so much to Keith.
Same goes for when he decides to cut from the team during the drill and it results in a collective punishment. He sensed they dun like himĀ
And wanted to give them even more reasons to hate him so it would feel to him like it was his choice.
So I think Keith wanted to be friends with the others deep inside. :(
And Shiro saw through all that being all likeĀ āYou canāt fuck it up no matter how much you try, Iāll always want you around.ā
AND KEITH STILL DOESNāT BELIEVE ANY OF THATĀ
He still fears Shiro will eventually give up on him
Shiro standing by his side there means so so much
And just think how much feelings were in that hug later
Specially since Shiro saw himself in Keithās fear hologram kinda doing the thing Adam did to him by making him chose between something important to him and their relationship.
