A #friend asked me to describe this #book in three words & I said #reflective #sad & #beautiful I knew this books was gonna be #incredible before I read one page and I was right. #ToniMorrison did a wonderful job showing how the standard of #beauty which is white effects both #black and white people thru her characters in #thebluesteye this book was hard to read at as it resurfaced a lot of #memories and #truths of mine that I had to revisit & digest years later. The bluest eye reminded me that as a teenager I once bought blue contacts. & I didn't know then but I know now that that was a form of #self-hatred it was the extreme of my #indoctrinated views of black features being less attractive. Yesterday a friend texted me " #SerenaWilliams is a man, google it" and that text was another reminder on how #psychological #racism can be to where Serna is so dominate in a traditional white sport that the only way to fathom her #winning is by calling her a man. Stripping her of her #womanhood. Indirectly calling her ugly. To some it's indirect but to others it blatant. This book was outstanding & it was written in the late 60's but might as well of been written yesterday because the message is still prelevant, I look forward to reading more of Toni Morrison's work in the future. Lastly, It's been great reading about #oppression from the #eyes of #black #women cause their voices are often muted but deserve to be heard as loud as any #brother #love #peace #spirituality
