If grandmothers around the world had a rallying cry, it would probably sound something like “You need to eat!”
Photographer Gabriele Galimberti’s grandmother said something similar to him before one of his many globetrotting work trips. To ensure he had at least one good meal, she prepared for him a dish of ravioli before he departed on one of his adventures.
“In that occasion I said to my grandma ‘You know, Grandma, there are many other grandmas around the world and most of them are really good cooks,” Galimberti wrote via email. “I’m going to meet them and ask them to cook for me so I can show you that you don’t have to be worried for me and the food that I will eat!’ This is the way my project was born!”
The project, “Delicatessen With Love”, took Galimberti to 58 countries where he photographed grandmothers with both the ingredients and finished signature dishes.
Galimberti said many of the subjects for the project were selected serendipitously, picked while he was working on a project about couch surfing that explored the global phenomenon of staying in other people’s houses. Since Galimberti never slept in hotels while working on the project, he was able to come into contact with people who introduced him to grandmothers in the area.
Galimberti acted as photographer and stylist during each shoot with the grandmothers, taking a portrait of both the women and the food they made for him.

[ I was going to post a long rant about some arrogant white yoga girl who insist people are ignorant for using olive oil to cook and should not eat fish or drink milk or eat cheese because of all sorts of problematic food issues, instead I said, let me focus on those who celebrate food. If you still want to see the link of the article she was waving on her Facebook, there you go. Privileged white people…ugh]
So cool:)
the third set is calling my name. i’m calling my mama after work.
My grandmother mixed three bean salad from a can, spread pimento cheese on white bread, and sectioned grapefruits with a special grapefruit segmenting knife. And she popped butter-flavored microwave popcorn to serve the dog during the stock market wrap at 4pm every day.

Date Nut Fruit Tarts
Made with love for my cousin's wedding shower in Lakewood OH.
INGREDIENTS FOR CRUST:
1 cup dates
1/3 cup walnuts
1/3 cup cashews
1/3 cup almonds
1 tsp. vanilla extract
1 T maple syrup
INGREDIENTS FOR FILLING:
1 banana, sliced
2 ounces strawberries, sliced
1 can mandarin oranges, drained
INSTRUCTIONS:
Blend crust ingredients together in a food processor to achieve a sticky consistency.
Press blended crust ingredients into a pie pan or use a cookie cutter to make tiny circles like I did.
Lay the bananas on top of the crust then strawberry slices and mandarin oranges on top of the bananas.
You may want to brush with lemon juice to prevent browning if you are not eating them the same day.
Cover and refrigerate for one hour or longer before serving.
BBQ Tofu Sandwiches on Pumpernickel
Thanks to Mike for bringing home an extra special loaf of Avalon Bread. Oh so yummy:)
Sweet potato pizza with kale and leeks.
Mike and I collaborated on this awesome pie and anything that can bring us together in the kitchen is a magical thing indeed. Could kitchen peacetime be near on the horizon? Pretty good so far, we even found affection for the same cooking oil! Maybe the smell of coconuts has softened our stubborn ways:)
Whatever, let's just eat and plug this new recipe from Skinny Bitch, totally my favorite vegan starter book. Also check out her blog for more fun recipes...
“Though many of the farms so closely crowded along the Detroit river banks had orchards, comprising several hundreds of these fruit trees, and few were entirely destitute, it is singular that little is known of their history.
ln answer to inquiries, old people will tell that their ancestors obtained the trees from Montreal, to which place they were brought at a still earlier day, from Normandy or Provence, but they have no knowledge when or from whence. The prevailing opinion is that the seeds were brought from France, and planted as soon as the first permanent settlements were made on the straits, about a century and a half ago. The present generation remember well the days of their boyhood, passed beneath the shade and in the enjoyment of the fruit of these trees, which in their recollection were even then of great size.
Before further considering the mystery of their origin, the character of these orchards claims our attention. When we recognize that from the orchards on this river have emanated many noted kinds of apples, still extensively appreciated throughout the northern States, it will be apparent that they contained no wild or common fruit. From here were disseminated the famous Calvilles, both red and white, the Detroit Red (Roseau of the French), the Pomme de Niege, or Fameuse (the celebrated Snow apple of America), all fruits of a wide reputation.”
