The inside of the infirmary came into focus before his eyes. Vincent didn’t remember how he got there. He planted his palms on the narrow bed, shifting into a sitting position and straightening his back. He remembered music spoken in the old language of the angel realm and the soft prayers from the choirs. Vincent couldn’t hear them anymore — not since his fall. Maybe it had been a dream, in which case he would’ve preferred not to wake up so soon.
One of the doctors approached him to ask about how he was feeling. “What happened?” Vincent asked back. The doctor seemed surprised by the question, eyeing him quietly for a moment before answering that nothing had happened. One moment, he was singing and in the next, he stopped. The guards couldn’t get him to respond, as if he was in a trance. All attempts were futile. It had been three days since.
“I apologize”, Vincent said, giving the doctor a nod of his head. “I got lost in my head. It won’t happen again.” The doctor asked him to wait while he filled out some paperwork before he was allowed to leave. Vincent looked around the infirmary, pressing his fingertips at the back of his neck in an attempt to soothe his nerves, somewhat embarrassed about his breakdown. That had never happened to him before and, for the first time since he arrived, he started to wonder whether coming to that place had been a good idea at all.
