For four long years in Kansas City, Missouri a deceased three year old little African American girl remained only known by the name Precious Doe.
On April 28 2001, a report came in to police that an elderly man had wandered away from home and a friend was concerned for his well being. While searching for the man, who was found, police came across a black trash bag. Sadly inside the bag contained the decapitated corpse of a small child, and in another bag about 200 yards away was her head.
There were no traces of fingerprints or any other evidence to who she was or what had happened to her. Even though police had released facial reconstruction images, made two busts, and her story was on television shows such as Americas Most Wanted, no one came forward with any information.
It wasn't until 2005 when Thurmon McIntosh called police giving a statement about his knowlege of Precious Doe that her identity would be revealed. McIntosh had read letters his grandson Harrell Johnson sent from prison to his wife Michelle Johnson expressing regret over an unmentioned act.
Michelle had told many people she had sent her daughter to live with a woman who had previously cared for her while Michelle herself was in prison. McIntosh felt this coupled with the letters was odd and had went to the police over fifty times but, they felt his speculations didn't make sense.
McIntosh finally confronted Harrell about his missing stepdaughter to which lead to Harrell admitting to the crime. This lead to McIntosh being able to give unreleased information to police which gave way to an investigation.
On May 5 2005, it was confirmed Precious Doe was in fact three year old Erica Michelle Marie Green.
Michelle and Harrell stated that one night in 2001 Erica would not go to bed when told and Harrell, who had been drinking and was high on PCP, had kicked her in the head.
Erica fell to the ground severely injured.
Michelle and Harrell were worried about outstanding warrants, so they did not seek medical attention for Erica.
She succumbed to her injuries two days later.
The pair decided in order to hide Erica's identity they would decapitate her with garden shears and dump the two bags in separate locations.
In exchange for testifying against Harrell, Michelle Johnson was sentenced to 25 years in prison. Harrell Johnson was convicted of first degree murder and sentenced to life in prison in October 2008.
