Honestly, as a parent, I have to say that it actually alarms me anytime my kid takes an aggressively strong stance in favor of my opinions. When she proactively spouts the same strongly held beliefs as me, I always always ask her why. And she nearly always looks at me with confusion. Her face says, “But this is what you believe, so why would you ask me why I believe it?” But I’m asking because she can’t answer the question. And I want her to know she can’t answer the question. I want her to know that my sincerely held beliefs are founded on evidence and logic, while hers have nothing under them. So then I explain to her what the other side believes and why they feel that way, and why I feel a different way. I explain to her the thought process and evidence that led to the beliefs I have, and why other people might disagree with that. I want her to know how to form a belief that is truly hers, not parroted from someone else. Even me.

That’s why it absolutely disgusts me the way people use their children to forward beliefs that children most likely do not have their own informed opinions about. It’s manipulative and sickening. And I’d be saying the same goddamn thing if this was a far left person pushing their child into speaking against the measles vaccine.
