Are we living in a simulation already?
Once upon a time, Chuang Tzu dreamed that he was a butterfly, flying about enjoying itself. It did not know that it was Chuang Chou. Suddenly he awoke, and veritably was Chuang Chou again. He did not know whether it was Chuang Chou dreaming that he was a butterfly, or whether it was the butterfly dreaming that it was Chuang Chou. Between Chuang Chou and the butterfly there must be some distinction. This is a case of what is called the transformation of things.

Reality is a question all on its own
If we are going to say that we might live in a simulation, there is a problem. We don’t know what it would be a simulation of. Reality all by itself is still very much a mystery down to its core. The universe is such a large and untenable beast, its hard for us to even comprehend its scope.
For fun, lets imagine that the reality we know is what is the foundation that a simulation builds upon. Lets say that in the real world things follow the physics and common sense we’ve come to know and understand. With that in mind, what If we are living in a simulated reproduction of reality? What clues would we have?
If you haven’t heard, theoretical physicist James Gates found what looks like computer code within a string theory equation. This is rather interesting, but does it say something about the nature of reality, or is it just a notion about the fundamentals of mathematics? Both computer code and string theory were created by people, so to use their commonality as evidence is kind of odd, right? There are surely more specific interpretations of the computer code with the string theory equation, but I don’t see how you can get around this being sort of a leap to say its evidence of simulation theory. That’s ‘jumping to conclusions’ for sure.
There’s also this interesting tidbit from Richard P. Feynman (one of the coolest physicists ever!)
“It always bothers me that, according to the laws as we understand them today, it takes a computing machine an infinite number of logical operations to figure out what goes on in no matter how tiny a region of space, and no matter how tiny a region of time. How can all that be going on in that tiny space? Why should it take an infinite amount of logic to figure out what one tiny piece of space/time is going to do? So I have often made the hypotheses that ultimately physics will not require a mathematical statement, that in the end the machinery will be revealed, and the laws will turn out to be simple, like the chequer board with all its apparent complexities”.
I like the idea of simulation theory and that has me worried. I think my bias towards the romantic idea that reality is all some kind of dream, or test, or something, is giving me hope that the theory is true. It seems like the idea of simulation theory is more of a philosophical debate than a scientific pursuit. Its one of those questions that might never really be answered.
