Web Pages Out. Web Spaces In. VR full Throttle
How can I replace an online shopping experience with VR? By creating a virtual store. How can I create forms in a 3d space? By eliminating the need for them. How do I communicate business ideas in a virtual environment? By communicating them IVL (In Virtual Life) armed with models graphs and data and then recording them for others to view.
The millennial generation will brag about how the internet used to be just on 2D screens. ‘Big deal’, the kids would say, ‘how useful is that?’ They might even be so bold as to say that the real internet revolution didn’t start until virtual reality was mainstream and the internet was ubiquitously everywhere. Might they be right?
Social Media’s Push in to the 3rd dimension
With Facebook buying Oculus Rift and a general need for a more personal form of social communication on the internet, Hopefully VR/AR can answer the call. If this does happen then it might drag other parts of the internet along with it.
With gaming being a big part of the current state of VR and social gaming being a more and more popular topic, it seems like a no-brainer than social and virtual will connect in a big way.
Adult Entertainment Industry
The pornography industry has been interested in Virtual Reality (and the devices that come with it) for some time now. Everyone knows how much power the adult entertainment industry has in shaping the way we consume media (think HD DVD and Betamax). There is no question that they will push content in to the 3D space and bring everyone else with it.
There is still the question of web spaces being either immersive or more tuned to AR. They could be both. After all, websites work on phones, tablets, and PC’s alike. There is no reason the web can’t adapt to a bold 3D environment.

The Alive Web: A New Era of Social Communication and Entertainment
The phrase, "The Alive Web," coined by Om Malik, describes the "immersive web" - the part of the internet where we are participating in real-time, as ourselves, and helping create the experience we're having. In other words, like real life, only without the constraints of place.
This infographic from Rounds looks at the main players in the Alive Web and what happens there.
