I had a terrible, horrible dream. A dream where you went away right before my eyes. I had it time and time again –you DIED in the END
debbie cake -- {clint}
Grocery shopping was terrible. Terrible terrible. You’d think a grown man would make himself a list of things he needed. And he did have a list. His list was a piece of paper that said dog food. Oh no he wasn’t just here for dog food, though. He should obviously shop for some food since the kitchen as the apartment was bare. But ya know - he wasn’t gonna put his food in that shared kitchen…
Maybe he should buy a little cupboard to put into his closet just for his food… who was he kidding? He could just keep it in the bag inn his room. Why go through the trouble of a cupboard??
Dog food was the essential. Also in Clint’s basket: apples, raisin brand, cool ranch and nacho cheese doritos, lunchables, the largest container of dark roast Columbian coffee he could find, a pack of beer, red vines, pizza hot pockets, at least twelve power bars, and two dog toys.
Not the most healthy but hey- this was being an adult, he could buy whatever he wanted.
Waiting impatiently he tapped his fingers against his cart and then cakes dropped at his feet. ??? Without wasting a moment Clint swooped down and picked up the cakes wrapped in plastic, turning to hand them to the person in line behind him. “You dropped yer-”
“Barnes?”
God, how clumsy could he get? He was supposed to be a legendary assassin, able to hold completely still for hours, track the tiniest movement, barely even breathe.
He thinks maybe thawing him out affected his motor skills.
Bucky stares down at the cakes in his crouched position, barely able to bring himself to look up at the man he’s basically thrown his food at, but then the man bends and picks up his cakes, turning to face him.
Oh god. Embarrassing. Maybe he can grab another coloring book.
Suddenly, his name is being spoken. Well, part of it.
“Barnes?”
Bucky looks up, forces himself to, despite all his panic-attack instincts telling him to keep his head down.
When he meets eyes with the other man, he’s stricken with familiarity unlike any he’s ever known; as in, a familiarity that doesn’t immediately fill him with dread.
This is Barton.
The first name isn’t exactly clicking right now, but he knows this guy. They’re... friendly, as far as he can remembers. His brain clicks into normal man mode and Bucky clicks a smile into place, straightening and taking the cakes as smoothly as he can with all the other things he’s holding.
“Barton,” he replies, sounding more confident than he is and knowing he probably looks more frazzled then he’s pretending to be. Still... despite being confused, despite everything, it’s still... comforting, to see someone he kind of recognizes.
“Uh. I. You’re here too.” He wets his lips, something prodding him to enunciate a little more clearly. “Small world. Or... weird, maze-like city, I guess.” Bucky tries to make his smile more sincere. “... I hate stores.”

“innocent” bystander
Okay, if he was cute before, Harley’s not sure what he is now. The little smirk, the tiniest little laugh that sounds like a once-in-a-blue-moon occurrence… all she can think is ‘oh no he’s cute’. Did she say that out loud? Maybe. Who cares - it’s true either way! He has a nice voice, too. It’s gravelly, like B-Man’s, but much less stupid and dumb. She’d be happy to listen to him talk (and laugh) about nothing in particular, but he’s got that kind of face and outfit combo that screams Social Loser. That’s okay, she can work with that. She’s worked with worse, honestly.
“Lighten up, Sweetcheeks!” She approaches him with a lighthearted skip, handmade slingshot extended in one hand, and a few small, red and black balls in the other. “Nobody evah died from a BB pellet, or a party bomb either! They’re just full ‘a confetti an’ glitter, and anybody who don’t” Doesn’t, chimes the voice in her head. Shut up voice. “wanna be showered in confetti an’ glitter deserves it anyway.” Ha! Has she done this before? She laughs theatrically, chuckles emphasized just a bit too much. Anything to drown out that nagging killjoy camping out in her fun-brane. “ ‘A course I have! What kinda clown doesn’t go around spreadin’ free smiles and fun? Now c’mon, let’s see if we can’t keep that handsome smile ‘a yours goin’. I promise it’ll be a real blast! They won’t know what hit ‘em!” Puns always work - there’s not a soul in the whole wide world that doesn’t like a good pun. And all of Harley’s puns are good puns, just ask anyone.
Bucky squints a little when he hears the girl mutter something to herself, ‘oh, no’, but he doesn’t quite catch the last part. Probably something derogatory, but oh well. He invites it.
The soldier watches somewhat warily as she skips closer to him, weapon extended. Cute or not, she could still be a threat. Bucky had learned quickly it didn’t matter what you looked like; cruelty had many faces.
Still, he has to admit the Sweetcheeks nickname doesn’t exactly spell ‘foreboding’. He looks her over as she speaks and giggles and laughs, and tries to school his face again, trying to keep his guard up.
Sure, she was acting really friendly, even saying that her ‘bombs’ weren’t dangerous. Still, it’s hard to believe her when she’s literally called it a bomb. “But glitter gets everywhere,” he says, nose wrinkling, but his voice carries a soft hint of playfulness. “Someone sparkly might not mind, but it’s not the best for covert things, I’d imagine.”
Bucky admittedly wasn’t scared of clowns. If he remembered correctly, (50/50 chance), Steve hadn’t liked them, way back when, but to Bucky they’d always seemed fine enough. This one is even charming, despite himself, and the fact that it’s a small young lady might be helping things.
But then, god, the puns. The puns. And the compliment. Bucky knows he doesn’t look his best; he could use a shower, a shave, an arm that didn’t blind him in direct sunlight. Still, he admittedly likes it, even if he knows it could just be to butter him up.
“Ugh,” he groans, holding up his flesh hand, the metal one as hidden from view as possible. “Stop, mercy, no more.” Still, the smirk is back; not really a smile, but close enough. “... Not like I can sleep anyway.”
He takes the slingshot and looks down at it, then back up at the clown through his lashes.
“... Know anyone you don’t like?”
#.oh if you’re gonna cry about it#.i’ll piggyback you
yeah thats not embarrasing
‘#bucky gave me permission to ride him”
“Doesn’t seem like you’re embarrassed.”

the truth is somewhere - {mulder}
Things in this sector must have switched around recently, because Mulder can’t find the same store he’d passed just yesterday. It wasn’t that big of a deal when things changed, but by the time he re-memorized everything, it was changing again.
He’d already tried to find the algorithm or whatever it was that it changed with, but he came to the conclusion that it was completely random. He might be able to find was he was looking for easier if he took his car, but he’d grown accustomed to walking over the past few months. He felt it helped him mingle better with the other poor chums who now called this place their home.
Speaking of such folk, he’d given up on finding the store and turned to see someone standing on the sidewalk. He had that same what the fuck look that so often plagued new people.
“Hey pal, you need a hand?” he asked tentatively, only half regretting the statement when he saw that the guy had some kind of high-tech prosthesis.
Okay. Well. He wasn’t gonna get anywhere just standing here.
Bucky nods to himself, putting on a determined face. Time to go.
Right.
He doesn’t move.
Shit.
He’s a little overstimulated. There’s too much, too many places to go, too many directions, too many people--
Someone comes up beside him, and Bucky flicks his eyes over to him, immediately a little on the defensive since his brain is overstimulated.
“Hey pal, you need a hand?”
Bucky squints, trying to decide if he’s failing to make a joke in very poor taste. He seems almost nervous, though, and the soldier admittedly definitely needed help. And a hand, if you have one to spare, he thinks wryly, before swallowing and giving a short nod.
“I’m tryin’ to find my apartment,” he says quietly. “In, uh... the apartment building...”
Yes. Very eloquent.

♬♬♬ – HER DAYS ARE BUSY NOW. Between filling notebook after notebook with observations on this city and the people who dwell within it, and the new work she’s taken upon herself, there’s little time to idle, to breathe, to truly let the reality of this world sink in. With a small paper box in hand, she heads quickly through the streets to the place where she took her first glimpse of the outside world. The place where everyone in this city first awoke, and where newcomers are bound to arrive sooner or later.
Her strut is swift and her head hangs low. Golden eyes watch the pavement beneath her feet, and not the looks of all the passerbys when they see the long ears atop her head. Though she is tempted to glance up, all her gaze is ever met with are dirty scrawls across the side of buildings that make her ears fall flat against the back of her head. Messages she’s seen time and time again since her arrival… yet somehow one never quite gets accustomed to the sting of words like ‘die freaks, die!’
So she keeps her head down, gripping the box in her arms tightly until she arrives at a familiar destination. Then at last she dares to turn her gaze skyward. The heavy ache in her heart eases at the sight of day melting into evening, of stars beginning to pry their way into sight. Faint smile plays across her lips. It’s there she stands, across the street from the laboratory in which the newcomers are born, waiting and watching for the doors to slide open.
It’s a game of luck, really. More often than not, her watch is fruitless– hours of standing, sitting idle in wait bleed into entire afternoons before she at last turns her hands up in resignation and returns home.
But not today.
She sits on the curb, recording the appearance of a truck parked on one side of the road within the confines of her spiral-bound notebook, when she catches movement from the lab out of the corner of her eye. Lowering her pen, she watches the stranger stumble from the white room into the street. Rabbit ears perk atop her head.
This is what you’ve been waiting for, she realizes after a moment. Gloria stumbles to her feet, hurriedly stowing her notepad in her pocket. Taking the box in her hands, she scurries across the street– the loud click of her heels against the curb announcing her presence for miles. “ H-h-hello! ” she greets as she approaches the stranger, pace slowing in caution as she draws near, “ You… you’re new to the city! At least, I… I believe you are! ”
Her heart begins to hammer in her ribcage. Gloria comes to a halt several feet away. Lips twitch into a nervous smile. Make the humans like you, she barks at herself in her head, that’s the whole point of this. “ I-I-It’s wonderful, isn’t it? ” The rabbit stammers, “ I… I’ve come w-with a welcoming gift, i-i-if you’d like it! ”
Ugh. Everything is blurry. Bucky puts down the board again and rubs his temple, trying to sort himself out. He aches, but just with the normal ache of laying on a metal table. And his arm, of course, but that always hurt.
With a sigh, Bucky looks out over the city, trying to decide on which direction to start walking. There didn’t seem to be any kind of information booth, or map, or... or anything really...
For a second, he just stands there, feeling hopelessly lost.
Идти.
Where?

There is no base!
He’s pulled by his admittedly pointless thoughts by someone loudly approaching him with a package in their arms.
Bucky pulls back a little, two steps, immediately wary. Package. Bomb, his mind jumps to, but then he flicks his eyes to the person holding it. She looks like... a normal girl, for the most part, but... his eyes move a little further north. Not exactly. Are those...?
Wow, he really need to lay down.
“You’re new to the city! At least, I... I believe you are!”
“Uh,” he manages, head still buzzing a little but not finding anything particularly threatening about the girl, besides that package. He’s spared from comment as she continues swiftly on; he’s grateful. She seems nervous; Bucky can practically see her pulse in her temple, her wetting her lips, her stammering. Bucky doesn’t let his guard down, of course, but he lets the slope of his shoulders smooth out, at least. She continues speaking and Bucky continues warily watching her.
When she offers up the ‘gift’, immediately he’s suspicious again. Still, if it had... food, or something, inside, he’d be stupid to pass it up.
“... Wonderful isn’t the word I’d use,” he mutters, before wetting his lips and looking from the girl’s face back down to the package. “... What is it?”
He’ll probably be able to tell if she’s lying.
He hasn’t got the best track record, of course, but... she seems... innocent enough.
Please don’t make me hurt you.
I think he’s very lonely. Lonelier than he lets on. Maybe lonelier than he even realizes.
